Belgian soccer captain suspended for spitting
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Belgium's soccer captain was suspended for five games by FIFA on Wednesday for spitting at an opponent during this month's World Cup qualifier against Spain.
Bart Goor said he would appeal. The midfielder also was fined $8,300 by soccer's governing body for spitting toward Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez. Goor was suspended for four games for that infraction and a fifth game for picking up two yellow cards during Belgium's 2-0 loss Oct. 9.
The strong punishment underlines the seriousness with which soccer authorities are treating such cases. Italian star Francesco Totti drew a three-game suspension for spitting during the Euro 2004 tournament. Switzerland's Alex Frei was suspended three games in a similar matter.
Also Wednesday, Belgian defender Eric Deflandre was suspended for insulting officials during the Oct. 9 game. He will miss three games and was fined $6,200.
