Spitzer Is Linked to Prostitution Ring

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his Fifth Avenue apartment early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He scheduled an announcement for 2:15 after inquiries from the Times.

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.

But a person with knowledge of the governor?s role said that the person believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The governor?s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13.

Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.

An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.

He had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.

Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state?s organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

??This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,? Mr. Spitzer said at the time. ?It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.?

Albany for months been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue in the coming days the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer?s first scandal, his aides? involvement in an effort to tarnish Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, the state?s top Republican.

Although i'm no fan of New York itself, I read the NY Post almost daily and this guy has been a disgrace from day 1.

That's some funny shit.

Wow Dogs, you sure are quick to jump on a story like this. I'll assume that you will post updates on Crag and Renzi just as fast.

I think this offense will qualify Spitzer to run for Congress. If the prostitutes are male, then he qualifies to run as a Republican.;)

He'll post about Craig right about the time he includes Asians and Jews as historically voting heavily democrat when he's on his black/hispanic rants.

I asked him about this about 5 years ago, facts included by me, and he said he was going to 'look into it' (I think it boggled his mind a little.)

I reminded him about it a year or two ago.

I guess he's still combing the right-wing blogs trying to figure out how to reconcile how the good guys could come down so strongly, poilitically, on the side of the dark folks.

Maybe Drudge holds the answer.

We'd have to research that - it's been about a 10-1 ration of GOP vs Dems getting busted the last 5 years. Seems that almost none of them on either side step down. Foley only did because there was absolutely no way out.

I imagin Spitzer will be a scumbag like Craig, Renzi, Jefferson, etc and drag it out at the expensive of his constintuents.

we may have jumped the gun...i just received an e-mail from "E. HASKELL,ESQ.".....

here it is...

"o.k. folks let's get this right -- he's been associating with "sexual activists" not prostitutes"....

excellent point from the counselor.... :SIB

if i were representing him,i`d go with,"my truth is that i am a sex addict".........then,rehab yada yada yada...

i disagreed with the clinton thing but he actuallly perjured himself and walked...

he`s gonna walk...they`re scamming and spinning as we speak...

i feel very badly for his reasonably attractive wife...in other photos, she looked pretty sharp...today,she looked like she was beaten with a rubber hose...

I got a feeling if this guy was liked at all by those in the sting, he would have gotten a pass.

I don't know a thing about him, but he may have had dealings with some of the law enforcement community involved with this in some of his previous "positions".

From what I know here, cops know an aweful lot about many of our politicians long before the curtain is pulled back.

i just can't figure one out yet........

I am here in NY. He has made a TON of enemies in his climb up the ladder. They will all be there waving as he goes sliding back down. If he is named in a Federal indictment (as is rumored), then he is done.

If its just soliciting a hooker I can't see the big deal--its not like he was punking teen age boys--or manslaughter??

Why resign?--If Dem congress will acquit sitting president as not quilty of pergury and obstruction with foresnic proof--does he think he won't be protected--maybe he's got running for senate in Mass on his mind--he'd be a lock :)

We should start a law firm anyway. We would frustrate the jury into submission.

arranging for the transportation across state lines of a woman for prostitution is a Federal crime. He is done. Half the Dems hate him and all the Republicans do as well. This isn't his first problem--he was just barely scraping by after the investigation to what he had done to the Republican state leader here (joe Bruno).
