I have been guilty of spreading a myth for the last 15 years.

I have always heard/thought that "bourbon" can only be made in KY. If it's made outside of KY, then it is just sour mash whiskey.

Well, lo and behold - I'm as wrong as btj is a racist.

From wikipedia:

Bourbon may be produced anywhere in the United States where it is legal to distill spirits. Currently most brands are produced in Kentucky, where Bourbon has a strong association. Estimates are that 95% of the world's bourbon is distilled and aged in Kentucky. Bourbon has been made in Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

I think I have stated this myth on the site several times, so I wanted to clear it up. My whole world is crumbling...

Above the Clouds....
Thanks for posting this. I bought some bourbon while in Georgia and my brother in law laughed at me and said it was not bourbon because it was distilled outside of Kentucky.

He is one of those that is never wrong. You bet I'm forwarding this right away!!

On the course!
In other hillbilly news, if you fuck your daughter outside of Kentucky, it's still incest.

Carry on.

While the US Government's definition of bourbon may allow it, I would be shocked to learn of any commercially available brand that is distilled outside of Bourbon County. The boys in the hollers take this shit very seriously and folks are routinely drawn and quartered for lesser offenses in those parts. These days, the Kentucky Syndicate carries more stroke than the modern day Mafia.

Perhaps Brother Wayne could weigh in on this discussion. .. ;)

You believe everything you read on wiki?

wikipedia.org has been rated as accurate as either of the two largest paper encyclopedias.

NOTE: I read that on wikipedia

There is one in Virginia called "Virginia Gentleman" and several in KY outside of Bourbon County.

Thanks for coming clean about this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels better about it...
