GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Steve Spurrier won't return to coach the Florida Gators.

Spurrier removed his name from consideration Thursday to replace Ron Zook, who was fired last week after the latest in a series of embarrassing losses. Zook was hired at Florida after the 2001 season, when Spurrier left the Gators to coach the Washington Redskins.

"When I departed three years ago, there were several reasons why I believed it was time to move on," Spurrier said in a statement released by the school. "Other than simply wanting to coach in the NFL someday, I also believed that 12 years at Florida was probably long enough. Many people in football believe that around 10-12 years in the same job is about the maximum time a coach should stay."

Florida fired Zook Oct. 25 after two-plus years. Zook and his staff will finish out the season; according to one report, the university will buy out Zook's contract at $450,000 for each of the remaining four years.

The Gators won six Southeastern Conference championships and the 1996 national title under Spurrier. He posted 122 victories over 12 seasons, tormented opponents with his offensive flair and witty one-liners, and left town with the best winning percentage in league history.

Spurrier said athletic director Jeremy Foley called him several times this week to set up a meeting after the season with him and school president Bernie Machen.

"They were obviously making an effort to meet with me," Spurrier said.

Spurrier resigned from the Redskins after last season. Washington went 12-20 in two seasons under Spurrier, losing 10 of the last 12.

from what i hear out of chicago, Illinois may try to take a stab at Spurrier, but i think the money issue would hold them back. but who knows, alot of Allumni were calling into the show saying they would do whatever it takes to get that program back up and running.

I am not a huge Spurrier fan. I think he is a very good coach but I do not put him on a pedestal like many CFB fans do. Here is why.

Spurrier's record

122-27-1 at Florida in 12 years.

But many fans do not look closer into Spurrier's record.

Of those 122 wins he beat Furman, Akron, San Jose St, N.Illinois, Louisville, Arkansas St, Louisiana Lafayette (3 times), New Mexico St, Houston, N.Illinois, Georgia Southern, Central Michigan, Citadel, Louisiana Monroe (2 times), Western Michigan, Central Florida, Ball St, Middle Tennessee St, Marshall, Alabama Birmingham, and Ohio all outside the SEC.

Lets see that's 24 wins in 12 years against these powers (ah 2 gimmes a year)

Then of course you have the other more well knowns he beat during that period that were non-SEC

1990 Oklahoma St. 4-7 record
1994 S. Mississippi 6-5 record
1997 S. Mississippi 9-3 record

3 more wins against mediocre teams outside the SEC.

Then he got to play some of these SEC teams whose records over Spurriers tenure were-

Vanderbilt- Spurrier got 10 wins (Vandy's record over the period 33-77)

Kentucky-Spurrier got 12 wins (Kentucks record over the period 48-87)

LSU-Spurrier got 11 wins (Tigers record over the period 63-62-1)

S.Carolina-Spurrier got 10 wins (Carolina's record over the period 50-62-1)

Auburn-Spurrier got 9 wins (Tigers record over that period 51-40-2)

Thats 52 wins in 12 years over teams that played close to 500 ball at best. Another 4 wins a season. :)

Geez, that looks to me to be about 6 wins a year over average teams. :)

Take a look at the rest of the teams he played and his record-

Syracuse 1-1
Alabama 6-2
Tennessee 8-4
Georgia 11-1
Florida St 5-8
Notre Dame 0-1
NC State 1-0
S.Mississippi 3-0
West Virginia 1-0
Nebraska 0-1
Arkansas 3-0
Penn St. 1-0
Michigan St 0-1
Miami 0-1
Maryland 1-0

total 41-20

Spurrier may be a great coach but he sure played some stiffs and did very very well against those. He did very well against some mediocre teams and did an especially good job against Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee but did poorly against Florida St and skipped playing Miami until the 2000 Sugar bowl when he got hammered.

Are you still impressed?

scott:

spurrier is one of the best college coaches the game has ever seen. period. the guy is a freakin offensive genius. imitation is the highest form of flattery, and many have tried to copy his vertical passing game in some form or another but NOBODY will ever run an offensive system like that guy.

i think youre forgetting one key thing about him:

this guy won at freakin DUKE. throw all his gator accomplishments aside. that could be the most impressive. if you can win at duke, you know a little something about coaching.

So if he was so damn good why did he beg out
of the yearly Miami/FSU/Florida series?

Nobody doubts he didn't win a lotta games and when he did he was scoring right up to the final gun with leads big enough to drive three wheelers through.

Nobody doubts he created an invironment in the Swamp where nobody liked to go there to play ( howling fans, great team and SEC homerism officiating)

Nobody doubts the guy was ahead of the College game with his sophisticated passing offense. although I think now a lotta coaches are starting to get to those although not many in the SEC.

Nobody doubts he wasn't one of the first coaches to recognize playing a schedule against the lesser teams to prepare for the SEC season.

My favorie Spurrier Quote was when talking about a fire that occured at a Auburn Dorm, that included some books. he quiped " The real Tragedy was that most of those books hadn't been colored yet" just classic smack....

scott:

there is a book available at barnes and nobles called 'the quoteable spurrier'. it is a classic. its a small, almost pocket-sized book with some of his classic one-liners and smack talking. a good read, if for nothing more than some laughs.

hes easily my favorite coach in any sport on any level.

btw, he turned danny weurfel, jesse palmer, doug johnson, and rex grossman among others into heisman trophy qb's when that list is mediocre at best.

it can also be argued that had brock berlin stayed at florida with spurrier there (all hypothetical) he could very well be a far better qb than he is today and a first-round pick. berlin easily has some of the best tools of any qb in the nation. but somewhere along the line, he went from a promising stud behind grossman at florida to a marginal qb at miami.

Scott,

Do you take the same approach with the record that Pete Carroll hascompiled at USC since he has feasted on many of the bottom feeders in the league?

Steve was a excellent coach. won a National Title as well.

Won at least nine games in each of his 12 seasons at Florida, one of only three coaches in major college history with that record.

Ranked in the top 15 nationally in each of his 12 seasons at Florida, including nine Top 10 finishes, five Top 5s and an average final ranking of 6.8.

Appeared in a bowl game in each of his last 11 seasons, one of only five schools with that record.

Spurrier is the only major college coach to win as many as 120 games in his first 12 seasons at one school (122-26-1 at Florida from 1990-2001).

One of only two coaches in major college history to win 10 or more games in six consecutive seasons (1993-98).

Four-time finalist for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year award.

Named SEC Coach of the Year five times (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996) and ACC Coach of the Year twice (1988 and 1989).

Holds the SEC record for career winning percentage in conference games (minimum of five years as head coach) with an 87-14 record (.861).

Ranks third all-time in SEC in overall winning percentage (minimum five years as head coach) at .816.

Here's what I here from people that don't know any more than anyone else...

If Spurrier declines, the Gators will offer the job to Jimmy Johnson. If he declines, they will hire Terry Bowden....

Everyone pokes at Fulmer but the guy just keeps on winning :)

Spurrier is the best motivator have ever seen, he gets more at of nothing than any coach. I think that is why he more successful at the college level, can't motivate millionaires :(

The expectations for Steve are so high. I don't know of any other coach posting a record like him having such critics saying he is not one of the best college coaches of our time. It should be a complement to him to have such critics. I'm not so sure he pulled his name out of the running. It is said to be a 50/50 split from the Bull Gators(boosters). Many have bad feelings about him leaving in the first place. Then not jumping at the chance for the job when offered, spurned many other boosters. Terry Bowden will not be the coach of the Gators. He is said to be a front-runner to replace his dad, but I have a hard time believing it. Many of you here know about what the investigations at Auburn showed(drinking and ladies) and I don't see any big program having him. Louisville's coach and Utah's coach seem to be the frontrunners. I think Marshal's coach is considered as well. Don't count out the younger Stoops kid as well. The Gator's will be back. It's hard to top what Steve accomplished, but we will be fine. It hurts a little, but it will happen. Gotta have the Gator faith.
