LSU chooses Miles for head coach
ORLANDO, Fla. -- LSU has settled on Oklahoma State coach Les Miles as the top choice for its head coaching vacancy and is preparing to offer him a contract, two sources said.
One source said that LSU would wait until Monday to make an announcement regarding Miles, 51, after he has an opportunity to meet with new LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe. Another source said something could be finalized with Miles by Wednesday.
LSU officials had no comment on the coaching search Saturday, even as Louisville coach Bobby Petrino withdrew his name from consideration. The sources indicated that LSU had decided on Miles before Petrino withdrew his name.
LSU officials had also planned to meet with Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio on Friday in Florida, but the meeting never took place. After that, the school was ready to settle on Miles. Neither Miles nor Oklahoma State officials could be reached for comment at the time of this report.
Miles was one of the first coaches contacted by LSU after Nick Saban announced last Saturday that he was leaving the Tigers to coach the Miami Dolphins. According to sources, Miles remained high on the school's list throughout the week, while they explored other possibilities, including interviews with Petrino, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, former Texas A&M
coach R.C. Slocum and current LSU receivers coach Bobby Williams.
Miles met with LSU officials early in the week in San Antonio, where he was coaching his team in the Alamo Bowl. Miles characterized the meeting as preliminary and informal, but sources said it was an interview for the job.
In four years at Oklahoma State, Miles has compiled a 28-21 record. He has twice beaten rival Oklahoma and was named Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2002.
The Cowboys (7-5) started this season fast before losing five of their last seven games, including a 33-7 loss to Ohio State in the Alamo Bowl on Wednesday night.
Miles had previously worked as a tight ends coach with the Dallas Cowboys, as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and as an offensive line coach at his alma mater, Michigan.
Miles recently agreed to a new contract with the Cowboys that extends through 2011 and pays him more than $1.5 million per year. LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said the school would pay its next coach the appropriate "market
value," depending on the coach.
