Lopez works out, hopeful of return
By Rick Hummel
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

PITTSBURGH _ Pending another examination of his ailing right elbow on Monday in St. Louis, Cardinals infielder Felipe Lopez is optimistic that the worst is behind him and that he will be playing soon.

Lopez, who went on the 15-day disabled list on April 26 with a recurrence of elbow inflammation, went through another strenuous on-field workout this afternoon at PNC Park and also has been taking some swings lefthanded in limited batting practice.

When the Cardinals return to St. Louis after concluding their seven-game trip, Lopez will be examined by Dr. George Paletta, the Cardinals? medical supervisor, on Monday.

?It should better,? said Lopez, who no doubt accentuated the injury by pitching an inning three weeks ago. ?It should be a lot better. I feel good.

?I hope it goes my way. I?m tired of sitting down?

The switch-hitting Lopez, who was starting at third base, shortstop and second base as almost a regular player while batting .273, has started only one game since April 18. ?It seems like a long time,? said Lopez. ?But it could be worse

?It could be me playing through that pain and then missing four months,?

Lopez said he was confident that no ligament tear would be found in this examination. ?They didn?t find it last time, so I don?t see why they would find it this time, especially since I haven?t even thrown a ball,? said Lopez, who was told not to throw for two weeks.

Part of Lopez?s training method today involved him pulling a parachute-type apparatus behind him as he ran a sprint. ?It?s been around for a long time. It used to be that they used a tire,? said Lopez.

?When I was little, I used to drag a tire or a sled. But this is much easier to carry around.?

Manager Tony La Russa, more guarded than Lopez, said, ?I know he?s making progress. He really hasn?t tested it a lot, so we?re still kind of hoping. He has not been stressed.

?We?re patiently impatient.?

Rasmus to hit seventh against Bucs lefthander Duke
By Rick Hummel
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

PITTSBURGH _Cardinals center fielder Colby Rasmus is only two for 14 (.143) against lefthanded pitching but he is in the lineup tonight at PNC Park and hitting seventh against Pittsburgh Pirates lefthander Zach Duke.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he was playing Rasmus against Duke because ?Duke?s tough on everybody.? Ordinarily, yes, but lefthanders are batting .310 against Duke and righthanders .303 this year against Duke so he at least Duke has been consistent. ?

Matt Holliday, two for his last 13 overall and five for 37 with runners in scoring position, remains fourth and Ryan Ludwick, nothing for his last 14, remains second.

La Russa, asked if he would flip-flop his two prime Albert Pujols protectors in the lineup, said he saw no reason to do that.

?Holliday isn?t red-hot, but Holliday isn?t struggling,? La Russa said. ?He?s hit enough balls hard. He?s doing fine. He?s really close.?

Ludwick, traditionally a streak hitter, isn?t as close but La Russa said, ?Ludwick gives an edge in that No. 2 hole that I want to maintain. There aren?t a whole lot of guys who are going that well.?

Brendan Ryan continues to hit ninth in La Russa?s new lineup. Pittsburgh manager John Russell stopped the concept of hitting his shortstop. Ronny Cedeno, ninth behind the pitcher when ?Cedeno went four for 44. Pittsburgh has gone 3-1 since Russell temporarily abandoned ship, including three wins in a row.

Thanks ie, I just don't see Lopez swaying that number that much. Cards have 75% backing them, opened at 230, this morning were at -220 and have lost 40 cents over the Day.

Pitt is a much better team at home than on the road... the last 3 gms showed u that.

# moved because someone (sharp group) played a large amt on pitt...
I can't ever play the big favs anyway, so I look for the great price on a doggie...

I think it'll be a low-scoring gm myself,

but as i've said before the crystal ball can get hazy at times!!
