Just wanted to start this thread up; sure there'll be lots of opinions today...

At this stage, I won't be playing the game, which has the host Queensland side at +2.5. But I will play a few exotics for enjoyment. Please no-one take these as tips - I will be playing them for 1/20th of a unit!

Here they are:

First tryscorer - Lockyer (Qld) 17-1
Fittler (NSW) 17-1
Smith (Qld) 23-1
Tallis (Qld) 16-1

First scoring play in the first half: No Score 151-1.

May be back with others..

Only one play on the State of Origin for me which is under 18.5 in the 1st half. Was paying $1.85 with Centrebet at the start of the week (which I took) but has now come in. The first game of the series is traditionally the lowest scoring and I would be surprised if more than 3 tries were scored in the 1st half. I think the game might open up in the 2nd half as fatigue sets in and the talented bench players start having an impact.

I think there is some slight value in $26 for a drawn score although I won't be backing it myself. Has only happened once in the past but it is always a possibility in State of Origin.

My gut feeling is that NSW will continue their domination from last year and win this game by at least 6 points. The only reasons I am not backing them are:

1) Andrew Johns is not playing (and he is the best player in the world).
2) It is being played in Brisbane.
3) It is State of Origin and anything can happen.

Good luck if you have a bet !!!!

Spotted this line too Cartman when trolling the exotics and it jumped out at me too. Although I wasn't smart enough to get on early, I still like it enough to make it my only one unit play of the match.
PLAY FIRST HALF UNDER 18.5 ($1.75)

Looking forward to the match a lot..

Not even a full replay on here if the tv guide I got in the paper is right. Channel 9 is a &*(())%^&(. They do this, no RL at all, and 2 hour delayed grand finals. I hope they keep changing rating systems so they never win again.

so, Fred or one of you other Northerners, maybe a review?

Anyway, speaking of dodgy Murdoch media, interesting article about the Queensland side and the new players etc. (and lack of Johns, etc., and appointment of Bennett) - and that NSW has won at Lang Park quite a bit recently, what I would be interested to know is, how often were Queensland underdogs there recently? Home state of origin underdog be some motivation?

Final score: Qld 34 NSW 16.
HT - 16-4
frown.gif

The under 18.5 first half never looked likely as three tries were scored in the first 22 minutes. Then the action dried up and the score remained 12-4 until three minutes from the break when NSW gave away a stupid penalty on halfway, Qld found touch close to the line and Carl Webb barged thru some ineffectual tackles to sink the wager.
However....

, Lockyer (17-1) opened the scoring in the second minute to ensure a nice $85 return for a $5 exotic.
Funnily enough, Smith (23-1) scored the second try and when Tallis (16-1) was charging for the line for the third (only to be stopped inches short by a superb Mark Hughes tackle) I was already on the phone to Gerald Daffy to find out what dividend I'd get for the trifecta
biggrin.gif

Interesting game; shocked at the lack of defence...NSW blew at least 4 tries so the score could have been a lot higher and the final margin a lot closer despite the better team winning.
Will be very interesting to see how the books set a line for game 2, both sides and totals - could be some opportunities there.
Nice collect on the first score Fred

That about sums it up.

The under 18.5 1st half was never looking like a chance with 16 points in the first 22 mins, but at the 37 min mark we were looking very good. But not to be ....

I still maintain it was a solid bet because even with a very open game and with no defence it only just lost. I will be looking for a similar bet in State of Origin 2.

I am certain that despite their woeful effort, New South Wales will start favourite in State of Origin 2.

Nice going Fred picking up a couple of winners and Anders for nailing Lockyer as first tryscorer.

I am glad that I only had the one bet because the way this game panned out was totally different to how I expected.

Good call on Lockyer Anders.

Cartmann I was thinking, after you pointed it out, that the u18.5 1st half was the strongest play around. Only the reduced price held me back.

A surprising game.

Should have stuck to my guns on the +2.5. All the experts on radio/paper were talking up NSW. A lesson there for me perhaps. First side to score was a good compensation.

It's awesome to have such a hyped game early in the year. Hopefully this series will remain interesting through to game 3.

No live origin in Victoria!? Unbelievable.

Programmers must think all in the 'south' have absolutely no interest in the NRL/S12 and the north little interest in AFL.

My favourite TV show 'Talking Footy' is no longer shown AT ALL here -- not even a late night replay!?

btw Does anyone have Foxsports? How do you rate it?

It does seem that Victoria gets a rough deal when it comes to Free to Air coverage of rugby league.

The solution is to move to the Gold Coast. I am lucky enough to get all the NSW and QLD Free to Air. I also get free Pay TV because I work for one of the Pay TV providers. Basically I get every game of AFL, NRL, and Super 12 (with approx 70% being live coverage).

Fred asked about Fox Sports, and generally I think it is a very good channel considering that Free to Air get first option on most major sporting events. The only thing I don't like about Fox Sports is some of the presenters they use. They tend to find just retired sports stars who may have been good on the field but are not too flash with a microphone.

If ever anyone has any questions about Pay TV in Australia I am happy to try and give them an answer.

Yeah, I wussed out on too Fred, doh. When everyone in the media is saying that, you are right, definitely time to consider the other way, especially given the player situation.

Well, my lack of Pay tv is because of where I live. You know, major metropolitan area, inner city suburb, really hard to cable that up.

However, basically the people that live here's fault - in an apartment block with half retirees, half others, pretty much.

FoxTel said 'hey, we will cable your building for free'

They said no. Dumbest thing I have ever heard, or close to. No? As in 'hey, fwits, you can charge more rent if you have cable access', for those that rent them out. Obviously Foxtel was not too persuasive, either, like, ok, how about cash bonus?

So, question remains, Cartman, why did they screw up the cable rollout so badly? Apart from the really dumb competition issue.

In the US they went ahead and paid the money to lay underground cables, or did the deal to give the councils what they wanted, and got regional monopolies.

AussieVamp,

I work for Austar (who services Rural & Regional Australia) so have no qualms if you want to have a dig at Foxtel !!!! Austar predominantly offers Satellite TV and we leave the whole issue of "metropolitan cabling" to the others. The main reason Austar has not gone into the cities is because Foxtel and Optus already have most of the market there, although I am sure Austar would do very well.

It is really hard on Pay TV providers who want to install everywhere they can but often run into issues with Body Corporates. They can push all they like but when you are dealing with *%$%ers (be as creative as you wish filling in the blanks) then it is very difficult getting them to sign. As you say they are the ones losing out as it is easier trying to attract tenants if Pay TV is already connected there.

I think Australia is still 5 years behind the US with Pay TV but they are catching up all the time. Austar launched Interactive TV last year and are planning to launch T-Mail (e-mail via your Pay TV decoder) in the near future.

But all this aside as long as one can watch the footy then who cares !!!!

No, Austar is bloody good, my dad has that, you get sports channels galore then.

Pretty stuffed industry though, maybe the only thing better in the bush is sports tv?

Speaking of watching the footy, the AFL ok, but easier to see a Super 12 game in America than in my place is a bit silly (the access issue)

Having lived in the USA I cannot imagine those running apartments there saying 'no, no, we don't want cable tv'

No stoopid luddites there

Wonder if the same idiots ancestors said 'no, no electricity, don't want that'

So what sort of reasons do these Body Corporates give, other than being run by probably 65 year old technophobes? Just don't understand it, as a commercial decision.

AussieVamp,

The common excuse from Body Corporates is due to cosmetic reasons. They don't like the look of a satellite dish or external cable. But the bottom line is they are just pig headed !!!!

Geez, with the ugly faecal brown some of these are, worried about that?

Tv antennae aren't ugly, presumably

Power lines might even be external cables. How about plumbing? All those weird fat-arsed pipes.

That is unbelievable.

Your answer sounds right to me, they are dickheads.
