Stating that an AK47 is pretty much indestructible is not an overstatement.

I used one briefly in Vietnam

I used one briefly in Vietnam

Bought one captured in Cambodian incursion 1970.... $25.00 it was an AK-51....51 designation was an AK47, produced in a Baltic country.

There was frustrations with the M-16 jamming if not spotlessly clean.
The AK could be thrown in a muddy river and be ready to rock and roll.

It was fun to shoot, and came with blue or green tracer rounds, can't remember. It would in a pinch, use M-14 ammo, but the m-14 could not use Ak 47 ammo.

Legally, to bring it home, the breach had to be welded shut, and concrete poured down the barrel, I did not have the resources so I sold it to a buddy.

I did keep the captured Viet Cong flag, its hanging on my wall in the man cave.

I was not really a "Bad ass"

I was much more fortunate than many who served in Vietnam, I've got a cousin that is to this day not right in the head, he survived the 5 month artillery siege of Khe Sanh 1968. The marines were surrounded and isolated.

I can't imagine what he went thru....I had an almost nightly taste of incoming mortar fire in the Mekong Delta. VC would lob a few mortar
rounds into our camp, then retreat into their underground bunkers.
We would call out the Black Ponies and Cobra's, who would absolutely blast the area for a couple hours with rockets and mini-guns.

Looking back, it was kinda surreal sitting on top of the bunkers, drinking beer, some smoking weed, watching the fireworks.
