And what is it to You......How do you recognize it...and who's STEAM is it !!!

In the sports gambling world, "steam" refers to a sudden influx of money all coming in on the same side or total causing the line to move as soon as the line is posted. Also, A "Steam" game refers to a contest in which the attached point spread is moved by the public upward or downward in rapid fashion for one reason or another. Steam doesn't always prove if the contest will win or lose, it just means heavy money was bet on the side/total/run line, etc., whatever percentage of take was the heaviest.

When I see a line move from -220 to -270, that's steam, but when that same line that went from -220 to -270 then back down to -240, shows me "steam" again bringing the line down, someone or the public just put a bundle on the dog. How else would books make money? They have to get action as close to 50/50 as they can, not always though, A's were 87% wagered on Tuesday and lost.

Thats the Standard Definition...You've been around the block a few times...when do you take "Steam" into consideration on whether u make a play or not ..also the public is not who always moves the line as i am sure you know...

Old dog here, yeah, Hammer. I have seen steam lines get followed and many times have been burned by "following" the movement. Hence I saw a week in MLB this year, week 1 I believe, where there were 15 games, the lines on the favorites all moved in their direction and 10 of the 15 dogs won outright.

In football, I've seen this happen time and time again too, see an opening line of -2 then steamed to -7 1/2, only to see the dog win outright.

Many times one sports book gets the word that someone put heavy money on a certain team, then they adjust that line, fearing the word will get out to others or that the "smart gambler" will come to their book to place a bet on that same team, so that book will move the line one way or the other, depending on the action.

It's a kwazee kwazee world, 'gambling', and some people make a life of it, and some like me am happy to supplement my income, while still working, LOL!!

GL!!

Thanks for the thread!

This is STEAM.................

08/13 09:09 PM +100 -110
08/13 09:09 PM -105 -105
08/13 09:09 PM -106 -104

In ONE MINUTE the line flops -16 cents

That is several MAX bets and we're not talking a few grand. Probably more like 5 figure bets.
