Steve Thomas signs with Detroit!

The Detroit Red Wings have added to the veteran character of their team, signing unrestricted free agent Steve Thomas.

The 40 year old has agreed to a one year deal worth $1-million.

Thomas had 14 goals and 30 points last season including 10 goals in 12 games with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, who picked him up from the Chicago Blackhawks for a fifth round draft pick in 2003.

The move comes one day after the Red Wings learned they will be without forward Henrik Zetterberg for at least the next month after suffering a broken bone in his leg during Monday's game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The losses of Zetterberg and Hatcher will hurt this team over the next few months. I think the Wings take one final run with the nucleus they have. Lets face it Yzerman, Hasek and Chelios will retire at the end of the season. Chelios might go another year but if their is a lockout forget it. Hull said he would retire if their is a lockout. They already lost Federov and Whitney is nowhere near what Federov brought to the table. That leaves you Shanahan as one of the few long standing Wings left. Should be interesting. We all know the Wings will get one last piece to the puzzle at the trade deadline and that should put them over the top in the West.

Thhis amazes me a 40 year old player that scores 14 goales gets 1M for one year. When next summer roles around and ther is a proposed lock out owners should take a close look at why instead of screwing the fans again. Don't get me wrong Thomas is a good player but 1m. Salaries have gone crazy and instead of just a number should be base and performance based.
