Top 8 Artists Of The '80s: The Essential Eight
From Steve Peake, About.com

5) The Police
One of the decade's premier bands both commercially and artistically, this talented trio cut a swath through the charts and always retained its trailblazer edge. Merging rock, punk, reggae and pop in constantly challenging ways, the band made the most of a brief existence, offering up diverse albums as well as arguably the finest single of the decade in "Every Breath You Take". Sadly, the internal dissension that served as the band's creative fuel eventually spelled the end of the Police.

Distinctive Achievements:

* Blended the energy and power of punk rock with impressive musicianship and eclectic tastes to thrive as an '80s mainstream rock band
* Featured three of rock music?s finest talents, led by one of the '80s greatest songwriters
* Seamlessly entered and ruled the emerging video age with photogenic looks and imaginative video concepts
* Interspersed reggae and other world music without alienating pop audiences
* Recorded what is arguably the greatest single of the '80s in ?Every Breath You Take?

Legacy: The Police packed in much energetic and jagged but always layered music over their eight-year existence and the quality of the band?s atmospheric catalogue has always attracted a strong critical and popular following. Even today, the group stands as one of rock?s most influential, helping future bands realize ever greater potential for eclecticism and experimentation in mainstream rock. In essence, three of rock?s finest musicians formed one of its best bands, even if that process ultimately destroyed them at their peak.

Welcome to America

Welcome to America

I respect your right to have an opinion, as music, much like art, is in the ear/eye of the beholder.

That pretty much sums it up right there. Musical tastes are similar to like/dislike of certain women. Some guys think Paris Hilton is a rancid, overrated bitch; other guys see the allure in her hedonistic sluttiness.

Now music stands for not only the music itself yet also the tapestry of your life and times. You may punctuate the best times in your life with the music that was playing and was popular during that time period. Whether it's bon jovi or bon scott it may accent some important time like when you puked that mickeys in the back of danny schneider's maverick, or listening to the pretenders at your prom, fireworks at aerosmith concert (indoor venue).

I like the Police since they were peaking at the same time as me. Their music takes me back to a great time, but I gotta be honest, when I pop one of their CDs in now, I find myself skipping from track to track looking for something that's going to warm me up. Maybe So Lonely or Driven To Tears.

Would I pay to go see their reunion concert? Yes probably out of the sheer nostalgia of it. Now the Allman brothers or Dickey Betts Band I shall attend every tour date possible for the pure enjoyment of the whole scene: roughneck fellow concert goers, tunes remind me of good times, blues and history of the band and their remarkable endurance against the clock. But that's just me.

IF YOUR DAUGHTER BROUGHT HOME NEIL YOUNG, STEVE PERRY, PHIL COLLINS OR STING, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU RATHER WELCOME WITH OPEN ARMS?

You know, good stuff like that. I could find plenty more to back up my claim that they were a terrific band and that they didn't suck, according to people at the very top of the musical review game, but I doubt it can ever match your insightful commentary that "The Police SUCK."

you are absolutely correct. As IO said "Do do do da da da" will always be remembered as one of the finest displays of musical writing ability of all time. I couldn't give a rats ass what Rolling Stone said as they also raved about Hole right before they/she became nothing but a smoking hole so have fun at the concert Chadman, don't want to argue with you. Yepper dude, The Police and Melrose Place how could talent get any better? What was I thinking? Personally bro I think most bands in the eighties blew, but I'm not a big Flock of Seagulls fan either.

I'm sure you don't give a rats ass about a review or two that doesn't agree with your personal ASSessment of musical ability, songwriting, whatever. I am not defending the Do Do Do song, nor would I try. I could easily dive into the groups you mention and hand pick a song or a performance or two to ridicule, as most bands and individuals have their moments of weakness. (Joe Cocker?!? Please...by the way, how much is that velvet blacklight Black Sabbath poster worth these days?) You asked me for an expert review to back up my thinking, I gave what is generally considered to be a leader in the field, and you don't give a rats ass about it. Not much more I can do, nor will I.

You sum up your analysis by essentially dismissing an entire generation of music, and associating them with crap tv shows of the time, so, I think discussing music ojectively with you is fruitless at best.

Boy, you sure get mad and nasty easily. I don't believe I attacked you personally...................but hey we can change all that if you really want too. Please see some of my former posts to others that thought this was a good idea and make your decision from there. In the parlance of our times, it is difficult to pick out a good singer songwriter that has endured to be known as one of Rocks greatest which is what you were asking for, great singer songwriters. I listen to all types of music and hesitate to call anyone a great writer in present day. If you want to know who I listen to now, I currently have in my cd changer; Kidrock, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, Nickelback, The Von Ehrics, Some old Black Sabbath and the velvet painting still kicks ass thanks, Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, Marilyn Manson, Eminem, Limp Biskit, The Allman Brothers, Albert King, and Wolfmother are the ones that come to mind. However I generally burn my own cds with some favorites and listen to them. Unfortunately I don't have any of the phenoms you mention, but thats not to say that I won't go gay some day and change my mind. I'm always willing to learn. Is there are special school for that or...........

Anyway, Chad...................as I stated earlier, enjoy the show. Don't forget your leg warmers you maniac, please post all the pics too so we can see all the great minds that will attend.

Hey ............see if you can get Richard Simmons autograph while you are there.

Ok...I can let this go now...you were actually pretty funny in that last post, and I appreciate good humor. That, and you have a pretty broad spectrum in your CD changer, some that I also like a lot.

Not sure why you said I got nasty...you were the one jamming me up with the Melrose Place jibes, etc.

And you sum it up with the old reliable "I might turn gay some day" humor, which pretty much tells me all I need to know. Nice one, Ozzie. I would think you would appreciate some legwarmers in Chicago these days, by the way.

Now that is a good reply...........had me giggling the whole way. Hell yeah I could use the warmers. I still get up there at least once a month to see friends and such. I am in Fort Worth now, moved down for career options. Couldn't really get away from the 80's digs as they are always good for a laugh. The eighties really never get old, just funnier. I know they have a good fan base and all, just not for me really. I had to reply though, if I am not a smart ass then what am I really? Anyway, cheers bro. I am off to the lake as it is unseasonably warm here today.

I won't be sending any messages in a bottle however. PEACE(thats my knew thing, learned it from this young guy that, in the parlance of our times I hestitate to call genius but must certainly be considered a phenom, and kind of stole it from him. Pretty sweet huh?)

Sister lives in Highland Park...I really like Chicagoland a lot. Love to visit them, and do things there. Nearly moved there a few years back, but took another path. Bro-in-law was a big shooter at the Tribune until he retired...night life/jazz critic, etc., so always got to see some cool shows, cool venues, etc. Favorite night was going to Second City Comedy Club when Jim Belushi was in the cast there, meeting him backstage. He was a really genuine guy. He did a hysterical "Denny's Chef" musical number there that may have been the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Peace.

Second City is still somewhat successful and enjoys a long run in Chicago thats for sure. Tons of young talent has gone through there. Yeah the town is pretty eclectic if you choose it to be, you konw what I mean? Anyway, Minny is a bit too cold for me but I do love to muskie fish. PEACE

Heard off local radio (Murph's show) that the Cubs may be planning to give up a night game to hold another concert in Wrigley......The Police!

Plan your next trip to Chicago correctly.
