Maybe this will teach the NFL not to throw lots of money at college coaches who can't cut it in the NFL as a head coach.

Steve Spurrier
Nick Saban
Bobby Petrino
Lou Holtz
Dennis Erickson
Butch Davis
Mike Riley
Dennis Green
Rich Brooks
Gene Stallings

Although, here are the ones who have been successful on both levels.

Jimmy Johnson
Don Coryell
Bill Walsh
John Robinson
Tom Coughlin
Barry Switzer

Where do you place Steve Mariucci? Ok in San Fran but horrible in Detriot.

What about John McKay? Successful at USC and of course was the first coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs. They lost their first 26 games, but by 1979 he had them in the NFC Championship game.

you forgot pete carroll....failed as the jets coach (doesn't everybody ?)...

barry switzer was a very lucky guy to step into the cowboys job right after johnson left.i don't think he would have succeeded anyplace else...

Thought I had him on my list (Carroll). I agree about Switzer though, walked into a great situation.

Dennis Green

Tough to call Dennis Green a failure at the pro level. He struggled in three seasons with Arizona, but what coach hasn't struggled in Arizona? Made the playoffs in 8 of 10 seasons with the Vikings, and only had one year with a losing record (his last year) with them. Even with the three dreadful Arizona seasons, his career NFL coaching record is 113-94. He was 97-62 with the Vikings.

I just remember his contract being bought out at Minnesota and his horrible tenure at AZ. I do agree with you about the Cards, it's a graveyard for coaches.
