A few things.

All time medal count......

olympic-medal-count.jpg

--The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world ? Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceana, and every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.

--No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted a Winter Games.

--Did you ever wonder why the official distance of a marathon was exactly 26 miles, 385 yards? In 1908, the marathon standard had been set at exactly 26 miles. However, at the Olympic marathon in London, it was decided that the royal family needed a better view of the finish line so organizers added an extra 385 yards to the race so the finish line would be in front of the royal box. And it's been that way ever since.

--Five countries have been represented at all Summer Olympic Games ? Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and Australia.

--The first black athlete to compete at the Olympics was Constantin Henriquez de Zubiera, competing for France in 1900.

What do you think makes certain countries excel in certain individual events where geography places no obvious part. South Korea for example apparently does very well in archery. You would think those types of events would have the most level playing fields given their relative ease of training and such, or at least I do:shrug:

UGA12.......

I have said this before........it all comes down to funding. It really is that simple. It doesn't matter on what sport. Yes, sure there are exceptions, but it really comes down to funding.

Canada is a great example, up until 1996, there was pretty much no funding for any athlete. Then the country kind of rallied and said "we need to fund our athletes". The turnaround was remarkable. In last Olympics Canada was unreal. As stated, luck plays a role and there is an exception to every rule. But it really comes down to funding.

Canada gave fuck all to any Summer Olympic athlete, now we do, just watch how much better Canada does now that we fund athletes. Oh and 20 grand for a gold medal also helps. Not to mention 20 grand for the coach and money for the trainers when a Canuck athlete wins.

Bottom line, if your country gets behind athletes and embraces the fact that some of their tax dollars will go towards an athlete as opposed to some art museum then you are good to go.

I love watching the Olympics, I like the Winter Olympics better but enjoy the Summer Olympics as well.

Note: Lots of sex in the Olympic Village......a ton actually:scared

A. Spoken like a true Canadian. The Winter Olympics blow, and the vast majority of the world doesn't give a shit about them.

B. Why are you scared of sex?

The funniest part is that they live for the Winter Olympics, yet they are not even in the top five for Winter Olympics medals. :lol:

And before I hear a population argument.

Finland Population 5,387,000

Winter Olympics Medal Count 151

Canada Population 34,482,779

Winter Olympics Medal Count 119

Jedi = bitter

freelanc = :canada1

:142smilie Why would I be bitter? My country dominates the medal counts. Just think it's sad that Canadians live for the Winter Olympics, yet they can't even crack the top 5. :sadwave:
