GAME NOTES: Coach Bobby Knight's Texas Tech Red Raiders will take to the road for the first time this season when they tangle with the rival TCU Horned Frogs tonight in a non-conference Lone Star state battle from Fort Worth. Knight's Raiders opened the year with a convincing 119-55 victory against UNC- Asheville last week. The 119-point output ties the score of the Texas Wesleyan game on November 30, 1981, for third place on the Tech's all-time single-game highs. The Red Raiders have now won each home-opener in the four years of Knight's tenure in Lubbock. As for the Horned Frogs, they have gotten off to a quick start to the 2004-05 campaign, having won their first two games. They recently pulled out a 74-60 win against Shawnee State and are now 2-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. It is also just the third time in the past seven years that TCU has won its first two games of the season. In terms of the all-time series between these two in-state rivals, the Red Raiders hold a 67-43 advantage. Texas Tech has also won the last two meetings, including a 67-60 victory last year in Lubbock.
Eight Red Raiders scored in double figures against UNC-Asheville last Friday, including Curtis Marshall who had a career-high 30 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Marshall also had a team-high seven rebounds and finished with two blocks and two steals. Jarrius Jackson chipped in with 15 points and five assists, while Drew Coffman had 14 points in a reserve role after making 4-of-7 shots taken from behind the arc. LucQuente White and Damir Suljagic each tallied 12 points, while White also had six points and seven assists. Ronald Ross was even more impressive distributing the ball than White, as he was able to dish out nine assists to go along with his 10 points, six rebounds and six steals. Darryl Dora and Martin Zeno each finished with 10 points as well, helping Texas Tech shoot 53.6 percent from the floor and a blistering 61.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Judson Stubbs had an impressive performance in a reserve role for the Horned Frogs against Shawnee State, scoring a team-high 14 points and grabbing six boards. Stubbs was able to convert 6-of-7 shots from the floor and also had a team-high two steals. Nile Murry chipped in with 11 points, while Corey Santee had 10 points despite making just 3-of-10 field goal attempts. TCU was able to dominate on the boards, 53-36, helping it overcome 20 turnovers and just 56 percent shooting from the foul line (14-of-25). Marcus Shropshire was held to just six points and five rebounds, but is still leading this squad with an average of 13.5 ppg this year. Stubbs is now second on the team with an average of 12 ppg, while Chudi Chinweze has been able to score 10.5 ppg and rip down a squad-best 9.0 rpg. As a team, the Horned Frogs are scoring 82 ppg and have been tough on defense, holding teams to just 60.5 ppg on only 34.9 percent shooting from the floor.
The Red Raiders will not dominate this TCU squad the way they did in their season-opener, but they should still come away with a victory behind the improving play of Marshall.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas Tech 78, TCU 70
