4-1 saturday....just in a real good groove right now...will ride it out until it ends... played these for sunday:

(btw- before i post plays, just got in and it looks like people are at each others throats over the duke/cmu game. fellas- it aint the end of the world. duke outclassed cmu in a big way saturday. but that shouldnt take away from what cmu accomplished this year. their successful season, and subsequent loss to duke proved two things- one good and one bad. cmu proved:

1) that the mac is one of the premier midmajor conference capable of producing some big time players.

2) however, as much as we like to think the gap is closing between the majors and the midmajors, cmu showed they really didnt even belong on the same floor as duke saturday. the mac is what it is. a good conference where the elite mac teams have one or two guys that could legitimately play at acc, big 12, sec, or pac-10 schools. the thing is- they have a SINGLE GUY OR TWO. thats why the major conferences are what they are. for every kaman at cmu, theres a roster full of kaman type players at duke. and when you have the luxury of just bringing in mass substitions like duke did- theres a HUGE HUGE difference between the 3rd, 4th, and 5th best guy on dukes roster compared to the 3rd, 4th, 5th best guy on a mac roster.

i think thats what made kent state so special last year. they had 3 or 4 LEGIT players, which is rare for a midmajor. 3 or 4 guys that could play most anywhere in the country. most midmajors really only have a guy or two. after that- the benches are filled with guys who often times just dont belong on the d-1 level.

all in all- just seemed foolish of guys to rip hellah. after all, he did pretty damn well in the conference the whole season. maybe he let his mac-heart get in the way of looking objectively at the matchup vs duke- but hell, the cat made mad money the whole year on cmu so at very worst, he maybe gave 5% of it back on saturday. so even if a mac-bias got in the way of one game, hes got a sh1tload of reasons to not worry about it. hellahs pumped out winners the whole year. so to him- i say congrats on a damn good year in the conference. props man.

=============================================

after throwin my two cents in, played these for sunday:

3 units....maryland (-2) over xavier
1 unit.....butler (+7.5) over louisville
1 unit.....utah/kentucky under 127

(ADDED 1 unit...butler (+8) for 2u total)

(ADDED.... 1 unit butler 2h (+5.5)...just feel like they took louisvilles best shot. cards have a tendency to come out firing, and then piss away leads, like they did vs marquette and memphis recently. butler survived the early flurry. they should have a very good shot to win outright. bulldogs could be this years cinderalla)

(ADDED....1 more unit , total of 2 units, on kentucky/utah under the 127....probably due for a blowout loss, but we'll see)

maryland is my strongest tourney play of the season so far. doesnt make it a guaranteed winner. just having a really good run right now and pressing the action a little on what i feel is a good play. terps are a pretty strong play for me. we'll see how it goes.

I'm on Butler and Maryland too. Butler is my biggest play of the day. By the way, you're a great capper. I always read your posts.

bastard:

line value is there with florida for sure- but it just takes major balls to go against izzo in the tourney, simply because msu is so well prepared and so physical. msu's "physical-ness" is what stood out when the 2 programs played in 2000 for the national title. rosters and players change, but philosophies dont. and msu is very methodical and super physical. thats what it comes down to. if the gators can handle that- they can win and cover. but msu is very similar to kentucky in style of play- and the gators had big time trouble with kentucky both meetings this year. gl with your decision. just a real tough game

gman, a question regarding the halftime bet. with butler leading by one, you already had butler +8- for the second half by virtue of your original game bet. why would you dilute the line by playing butler +5- in the second half? just a style difference i guess. or did you see something in butler's play that made you like them even more?

nice work in your tourney plays to date.

loophole:

youre absolutely correct. i normally dont like to "press" bets, because you run the risk of diluting your original game line. but i felt that the 2h line made butler +4.5 for the game essentially, and given the fact that butler took louisvilles best shot- i was comfortable adding butler 2h for a unit- even though i already had 2 units for the game.

basically, the tradeoff with the linesmaker is that obviously im taking a "shaved/reduced" game line, but 20:00 are in the book already- so its buyer beware.

hope that makes sense.

this is the only other bet (besides Hoosiers in 1st rd) that I've really liked in tourney thus far ... I feel Terps survived scare and are more relaxed, i.e. Duke, Kansas (in their 2nd rd games) and others thru the years, Ive seen this coaching HS etc all my life ... might be shallow theory, but Terps by +5 IMO

take care, gregg

ps great job capping!

pt1gard:

not shallow theory at all. in fact, thats a lot of the reason i like maryland. they got their "scare". sometimes, thats all it takes to provide a springboard for wins in the next rounds. when florida beat butler 3 years ago on miller's shot in the very first round of the tourney, that win catapulted florida all the way to the title game and they looked impressive all the way. terps have veterans that should re-focus very well for today, and use their "second chance" to their advantage. gl bud
