Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Brewers

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-131)

Series

The Cardinals and Brewers opened up their three-game set at Miller Park in dramatic fashion on Friday. With St. Louis trailing 4-3 in the ninth inning, Nick Stavinoha hit a two-run blast off Milwaukee closer Trevor Hoffman, lifting the Cardinals to a 5-4 win and handing Hoffman his first blown save of 2009.

St. Louis crushed the Brewers 7-1 Saturday. The Cardinals got a big day at the plate from catcher Yadier Molina, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI including a two-run home run. Albert Pujols finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI, giving him six on the season.

The Cardinals and Brewers split their 18 meetings last year, with the Cardinals winning seven of nine at Miller Park. The Brewers closed out their 2009 regular season with a three-game sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis, a series in which the two teams combined to score 43 runs.

For the year, the teams averaged a combined 8.3 runs per game when facing each other. They have played under in both games this season.

Pen pals

Hoffman?s hiccup notwithstanding, the bullpen has been a strong point for Milwaukee over the first week of the season, with setup men LaTroy Hawkins and Todd Coffey leading the way.

Going into Saturday?s game, Hawkins and Coffey had combined for six shutout innings, over which they allowed only one hit between them. Claudio Vargas allowed one run in relief Saturday after a rough outing from starter Yovani Gallardo.

Carp is sharp

The Cardinals will send Chris Carpenter to the mound Sunday night for his second start of the season. He allowed two runs in six innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day Monday.

In 2009, Carpenter pitched brilliantly against Milwaukee, going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his three starts against the Brewers. He pitched especially well at Miller Park, allowing just three hits over 17 innings without yielding a single run.

Milwaukee will counter with newly acquired lefty Randy Wolf, who opened his season with a win over Colorado Tuesday night. In his only 2009 start against the Cardinals, Wolf took the loss, allowing two earned runs over six innings of work. For his career, Wolf is 3-5 against St. Louis with a respectable 3.64 ERA.

Listen to your Hart

It will be interesting to see who gets the start in right field for Milwaukee Sunday. Corey Hart was named the starter coming into the regular season, despite a terrible showing in spring training, but Jim Edmonds has started three of Milwaukee?s first five games in right field.

Brewers manager Ken Macha insists that he went with Edmonds based on the matchups and that there is no platoon, but the situation bears watching. It shouldn?t come as a surprise if Macha goes with the left-handed Edmonds against Carpenter, a righty.

Hart was the Brew Crew?s lone offense in Saturday?s loss. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He?s hitting .286 BA to start the year.

What?s in the Cards?

The St. Louis bullpen struggled mightily in their season-opening series in Cincinnati, posting a 7.11 ERA in three games, but rebounded nicely against the Brewers on Friday with three scoreless innings.

Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte came in for three innings in relief of starter Jaime Garcia Saturday. The two did not allow a hit and had just one walk while striking out two batters.

Holliday cheer

Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday has feasted on Milwaukee pitchers over his career, batting .413 with a lifetime 1.193 OPS, heading into Saturday?s game. Holliday is off to a torrid start this season, batting .474 through Friday?s games. He was 2-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday?s victory.

Reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols is homerless since going yard twice on Opening Day.

Weather

Sunday?s forecast calls for temperatures around 50 degrees with little wind and no precipitation. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox (-125, 8.5)

The old Ozzie Guillen probably would have already blown a fuse following the team's slow start to the season, but this may be the kinder, gentler version of the White Sox manager.

The ChiSox have struggled at the plate during the the first week of the season, scoring just 10 runs during a current four-game losing streak, including a pair of 11-inning losses to the Twins and the Tigers.

"Our bats are very cold," Guillen told the Chicago Tribune. "No bats in the lineup are swinging well. It's tough when four guys don't have an average yet. ... I have to be patient now because if (I'm not), it will be a long season."

Patience and pitching should pay off for the ChiSox today. White Sox pitchers have posted a sub 3.00 ERA and have struck out 48 batters in their first five games.

Workhorse Mark Buerhle (1-0) gets the ball for Guillen's troops today in hopes of stopping the losing skid.

Pick: White Sox

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-135, 9)

The Yankees finally appear to have gotten their bats going Saturday against the Devil Rays.

And today, they face a pitcher they've feasted on in the past.

Tampa will go with ace James Shields, who has struggled mightily against the Yanks. Shields has just a 1-7 career mark against the Bombers, and sports a 6.00 ERA in nine appearances.

N.Y. turns to A.J. Burnett, who is 11-4 all-time against the Rays, including a 2.77 ERA in 21 games.

Pick: Yankees

Cleveland Indians (2-3) at Detroit Tigers (4-1), 1:05 p.m.

Cleveland Indians (2-3) at Detroit Tigers (4-1), 1:05 p.m.

Cleveland Indians (2-3) at Detroit Tigers (4-1), 1:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cleveland - Jake Westbrook (0-1, 11.25) Detroit - Justin Verlander (0-0, 7.20)

- Justin Verlander tries once again for his first win of the season this afternoon, when the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians wrap up their three-game series from Comerica Park.

Verlander did not get a decision in his 2010 lid-lifting assignment Monday against Kansas City, as he allowed four runs and six hits in five innings of his team's 8-4 win. He also struck out six and walked a batter.

The 27-year-old righty, who agreed to a five-year, $80 million extension this past winter, has struggled against the Indians over the course of his young career, posting an 8-10 mark to go along with a 5.20 earned run average in 19 starts.

Cleveland, meanwhile, will counter with right-hander Jake Westbrook, who was charged with the loss Monday in Chicago in his first start since May of 2008.

Westbrook, who missed most of the last two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery, was hit for five runs and five hits in four innings in the White Sox' 6-0 win.

"He wasn't getting ahead and he wasn't rotating," Indians catcher Lou Marson said after the loss. "That's what it comes down to. Hopefully, he'll build up to that and come back better next time."

In 20 career games (17 starts) against the Tigers, Westbrook is 4-8 with a 6.05 ERA.

The Tigers beat the Indians for the eighth straight time on Saturday, as Magglio Ordonez belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Jeremy Bonderman earned his first win in nearly two years in Detroit's 4-2 triumph.

Bonderman made only 13 starts in the past two years -- and just one last season -- due to a problem with his pitching shoulder, but earned the win after allowing just one run, one hit and two walks in five frames. The 27- year-old, who was making his first home start since May 22, 2008 -- also the date of his last win -- struck out five.

"I wasn't as nervous as I thought I was going to be, but it was just good to go out there and get the win for the team," Bonderman said. "We're playing well, guys are playing defense and are scoring runs and getting on base quite a bit."

Ryan Perry notched his first save with 1 1/3 perfect frames to finish the contest.

Brandon Inge added two hits and an RBI while Scott Sizemore also drove in a run for the Tigers, who have won four of five to start the season.

Mitch Talbot was saddled with the loss and allowed four runs on six hits and five walks in five innings in his Indians' debut.

"I felt comfortable out there," Talbot said. "I couldn't find the strike zone for the first three innings -- I wasn't locating my fastball at all. My changeup and slider weren't very good. Then it came around."

Detroit took 14 of its 18 meetings with the Tribe a year ago, including seven of the nine matchups contested in the Motor City.

Washington Nationals (2-3) at New York Mets (2-3), 1:10 p.m.

Washington Nationals (2-3) at New York Mets (2-3), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Washington - Livan Hernandez (0-0, 0.00) New York - Johan Santana (1-0, 1.50)

Two award-laden veterans square off on the mound today at Citi Field when the host New York Mets face the Washington Nationals in the rubber match of a three-game weekend series.

For the Mets, left-hander Johan Santana makes his second start of 2010 after opening the year with a four-hit, one-run effort over six innings in a 7-1 defeat of the Florida Marlins on April 5.

The former American League Cy Young Award winner is in his third season in the NL with the Mets. He went 16-7 over 34 starts with a 2.53 earned run average on 2008, then battled injuries while going 13-9 in 25 starts with a 3.13 ERA last year.

The 31-year-old is 6-1 in seven career starts against Washington, with a 2.63 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 48 innings.

Taking the mound for the Nationals will be 35-year-old righty Livan Hernandez, who starred in the postseason en route to a World Series title with the Marlins as a 22-year-old back in 1997.

The Cuban export is a veteran of 413 major-league appearances and has recorded 156 wins, including nine last season while splitting time with the Mets and Nationals.

He's played for seven big-league teams since leaving the Marlins in 1999, including San Francisco, Montreal, Washington, Arizona, Minnesota, Colorado and New York.

Hernandez was 7-8 in 23 starts with the Mets in 2009 and was 2-4 in eight outings with the Nationals. He is 11-13 with three complete games and a 4.58 ERA in 32 career starts against New York.

On Saturday, Willy Taveras went 2-for-4 with a career-high four runs batted in, and Willie Harris made a spectacular diving catch to end the game as Washington edged the Mets, 4-3.

Taveras hit a two-run triple and a two-run single for the Nationals, who have won two of three. John Lannan (1-1) earned his first win after yielding three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings.

Tyler Clippard came on in relief and struck out seven in three scoreless innings, and Matt Capps held on for his second save of the season.

Jeff Francoeur had two hits and scored a run for the Mets, who have lost three of four and went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

New York also welcomed back Jose Reyes, who was playing in a regular season game for the first time since May 20, 2009. Reyes, who was hampered by leg injuries last season and a thyroid issue this spring, batted leadoff and went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in his debut.

Oliver Perez (0-1) again struggled with his command, allowing four runs, four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. The southpaw struck out six in his season debut.

The Mets were swept in three games when they last faced the Nationals on Sept. 28-30 of last season, but have won 10 of their last 12 at home versus Washington.
