SHARK'S WINNERS

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Sunday, April 24th

TEXAS at NY YANKEES
TEX P ASTACIO -R vs NYY R JOHNSON -L
The Rangers and Yankees wrap up their weekend series in New York. Today's pitching matchup features Pedro Astacio of Texas versus Randy Johnson of the Yankees. Astacio (1-1, 1.64 ERA) has had quality starts in his first three appearances for the Rangers. He is coming off his best outing of the season, scattering six hits in an eight-inning 3-0 home shutout of the Oakland A's. He was 12-11 with a 4.79 ERA in 31 starts for the Mets in 2002 and saw limited action the past two seasons due to injuries. He missed most of April in 2004 with the Red Sox with biceps tendonitis and sat out the final four months of the season after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right shoulder, but has gone at least 7.0 innings in his three starts so far in 2005. Johnson (1-1, 5.13 ERA) is looking for his first win since Opening Night (April 3rd versus Boston), having allowed at least five runs in each of his past three outings. In his last two starts, he has allowed five homers in losses to Tampa Bay and Boston. However, he has walked just three while striking out 21 in his past three starts. Despite that, the Rangers look like a live 'dog today.

BOSTON at TAMPA BAY
BOS B ARROYO -R vs TAM H NOMO -R
The Red Sox finalize their three game set with the Devil Rays in Tampa Bay. In today's game, Bronson Arroyo takes the hill for the Red Sox, while Hideo Nomo goes for the Devil Rays. Arroyo (1-0, 3.86 ERA) is coming off a good outing against the Blue Jays, when he gave up just one run on eight hits over 7.0 innings, but he took a no-decision in an eventual 4-3 loss. He is 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA in three starts at Tropicana Field and was 2-1 with an 4.05 ERA last year against the Devil Rays. Nomo (2-1, 6.59 ERA) picked up a victory in his last start on Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits with one homer, three walks and 2 K's in 5.2 innings in a 6-2 win versus the Yankees and Randy Johnson as a +320 road underdog. Nomo's last start against the Red Sox on April 15th in Boston was a nightmare, as he allowed eight runs on five hits with one homer, five walks and 1 strikeout in just 2.0 innings in a 10-0 loss. However, he has only allowed one run in two of his three starts this year and will be looking for a little redemption today as a +150 'dog. Go Devil Rays.

**Padres (Lawrence) at Diamondbacks (Estes)**

?Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed San Diego as a $1.25 road ?chalk? over Arizona, with the total listed at 9 ?. This National League West contest is scheduled to begin at 4:10 p.m. ET.

?San Diego right-hander Brian Lawrence (1-2, 5.60 ERA) is off his first victory of the year after dumping San Francisco Tuesday as a $1.43 home favorite, 5-2. The five-year veteran went eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

?The combined seven runs failed to eclipse the eight-run closing total, helping the ?under? improve to 2-1 on the young season.

?Lawrence was 0-1 against Arizona last season in two starts, going a combined 10 innings while yielding eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits (two home runs) with five walks and six strikeouts. The Padres ended up losing those games as a road ?pick? both times, 12-7 and 8-5. The ?over? cashed each matchup.

?Arizona counters with southpaw Shawn Estes (1-1, 4.00 ERA), who is off his first loss of the season. The California native fell to Colorado Tuesday as a $1.12 road underdog, 8-1, while the combined nine runs went ?under? the 13-run closing total. The ?under? has occurred his last two efforts.

?The 32-year-old was reached for three runs on six hits (one home run) with six walks and four strikeouts over five innings.

?Estes was 1-0 versus San Diego last year in four starts as a member of the Colorado Rockies, surrendering a combined 11 runs on 23 hits (two home runs) with 14 walks and 16 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings. The Rockies fell as a $1.50 road underdog, 2-1, and as a $1.15 home ?dog, 10-4, while prevailing as a $1.80 road ?dog, 6-5, and as a $1.62 road ?dog, 8-2. The ?over? was 3-1 during those four games.

**Indians (Elarton) at Mariners (Moyer)**

?LVSC lists Seattle as a $1.40 home favorite over Cleveland, with the total set at nine. This American League matchup is scheduled to begin at 4:05 p.m. ET.

?Cleveland pitcher Scott Elarton (0-0, 7.90 ERA) heads to the hill after picking up three consecutive no decisions.

?The towering 6-foot-8 right-hander finagled a no-decision against Kansas City Tuesday despite yielding five runs on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout over just 3 2/3 innings. The Indians eventually dropped that affair as a $1.08 road favorite, 6-5.

?The combined 11 runs eclipsed the 9 1/2-run closing total, helping the ?over? cash his second consecutive start.

?Elarton received a no-decision against Seattle last year despite surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits (one home run) with one walk and five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Cleveland dropped that contest as a $1.45 road underdog, 7-5. The combined 12 runs toppled the 8 1/2-run closing total.

?Seattle veteran Jamie Moyer (3-0, 3.00 ERA) continued his winning ways with Tuesday?s victory over Los Angeles as a road ?pick,? 5-3. The left-hander was reached for three runs on five hits (two home runs) with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings.

?The combined eight runs failed to eclipse the 9 1/2-run closing total, ending back-to-back ?over? outings.

?Moyer was 1-0 against Cleveland last year in two starts, going a combined 12 innings while allowing four runs on 12 hits (two home runs) with two walks and nine strikeouts. The Mariners triumphed as a $1.20 road underdog, 7-3, and as a $1.55 home ?chalk,? 7-5. The ?over? prevailed both times.

**Athletics (Blanton) at Angels (Escobar)**

?LVSC has Los Angeles as a $1.35 home ?chalk? over Oakland, with the total listed at nine ?over? (minus $1.20). This AL West contest is scheduled to begin at 8:05 p.m. ET.

?Oakland?s Joe Blanton (0-1, 2.04 ERA) toes the rubber in an effort to rebound from Tuesday?s setback to Texas as a $1.15 road underdog, 3-0. The 24-year-old went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

?The three runs never seriously threatened the 10-run closing total, helping the ?under? improve to 2-0-1 his three starts.

?Blanton has never started against the Angels in his brief two-year major league career.

?Los Angeles pitcher Kelvim Escobar is making his first start of the season after spending time on the 15-day disabled list due to a right elbow strain.

?The Venezuela native was 1-2 against Oakland last year in five starts, going a combined 27 1/3 innings while being reached for 18 runs on 29 hits (three home runs) with 13 walks and 29 strikeouts.

?The Angels prevailed as a $1.16 road underdog, 6-3, and as a $1.06 road favorite, 5-4, while losing as a $1.55 home ?chalk,? 7-1, as a $1.24 road ?dog, 5-4, and as a $1.31 home favorite, 6-3. The ?over? went 4-1 during those five games.

Guaranteed Pick: Big Al Mcmordie

Game: Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Devil Rays Apr 24 2005 2:15PM
Prediction: over
Reason: At 2:15pm our selection is on Boston at TB 'over' the total. There aren't too many teams in the Majors that would have room in their starting rotations for Hideo Nomo. Apparently, the Devil Rays are one of those teams. Earlier this year, Nomo started against the Red Sox and his team lost a lopsided 10 - 0 decision. That game was against David Wells of the Sox, and the Rays hit much better against righties than lefties. Today's starter, Bronson Arroyo (a righty) has pitched well, but is due for a letdown and what better place for that to happen than the hitter friendly confines of Tropicana field. Take the 'over'.

Game: Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals Apr 24 2005 2:05PM
Prediction: Chicago White Sox
Reason: At 2:05 our selection is on the Chicago White Sox over the KC Royals. These are two teams are going in different directions as the White Sox, under manager Ozzie Guillen are off to a sizzling start and the Royals are where they usually find themselves. Orlando Hernandez is coming off of one his best performances as a member of the White Sox rotation on April 17 against the Minnesota Twins and Brad Radke. The Sox are 14 - 4 and the Royals are 5 - 13. KC's bullpen has been very inconsistent with an ERA of over 5 runs per nine innings this year and the starters have not performed much better. Royals starter Denny Bautista has been uninspiring to say the least with an ERA of almost 6.5 runs per game in his three starts so far. The Sox have won nine of the last eleven games between these two going back to last year including a close 3 - 2 victory on Saturday night. This game will not be close. Take the White Sox.
