Tim Drew gets call. Unheralded minor leaguer tapped as fifth starter

Desperate times call for desperate measures and that means Tim Drew will be the Expos' starting pitcher in the finale of the Braves series Sunday afternoon.

Manager Frank Robinson confirmed yesterday Drew will be the latest pitcher to fill the role of fifth starter. Sunny Kim pitched his way out of the role earlier this week.

Drew was recalled from the minors last week and there was nothing in his performance in Edmonton that indicated he was ready to make another bid at a major-league job. He was 3-8 with a 7.50 earned-run average.

But Drew may prove better in The Show. Prior to this year, he made 18 major-league appearances with Cleveland and the Expos and had a 2-2 record with a 6.90 ERA. He auditioned for his latest chance Wednesday night with his first appearance this season in an Expos' uniform. He retired the side in the ninth in the Expos' 11-4 win over the Mets in New York.

And Drew fits in with the other Expos' starters because he's a righthander. When Claudio Vargas started last night's game, it was the 203rd consecutive game started by an Expos' righthander. The last lefthander to start for Montreal was Bruce Chen on May 19, 2002, in Los Angeles.

Next! Stanford is new face in Tribe's rotation

07/05/03

Minneapolis- Left-hander Jason Stanford, as expected, will start tomorrow's game against the Twins.

He'll take Ricardo Rodriguez's spot in the rotation, but he's probably not going to hold it long. Rodriguez was optioned to Class AAA Buffalo on Wednesday.

Stanford (8-2, 3.18 ERA at Buffalo) pitched two innings Thursday with Buffalo before being taken out of the game to save him for tomorrow.

"He's been pitching about as good as anyone has all year at Buffalo," said manager Eric Wedge. "He's earned his way at every stop he's been at for us."

Stanford joined the Indians before last night's game, but he won't be activated until tomorrow.

"We'll play it by ear," said Wedge, when asked if Stanford would make more than one start.

Jake Westbrook is scheduled to rejoin the rotation from Buffalo for a July 12 doubleheader against the White Sox.

"This doesn't change Westbrook at all," Wedge said.

Stanford will be the Tribe's 25th pitcher this year.

"I managed him for a couple of starts in the minors," Wedge said. "He's a command guy who can put the ball where he wants to."

Stanford to come up

MINNEAPOLIS - and get Sunday start

Jason Stanford will be called up and start the series finale against the Twins on Sunday.

``Jason is a guy who arguably has been pitching as well as anybody at Buffalo all year,'' Manager Eric Wedge said. ``So this is a good opportunity to get him up here and let everyone else stay where they are.''

Stanford is 8-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 16 starts at Triple-A.

He has walked only 21 but struck out 82 in 95 innings.

Chances are, Stanford will get only one start before returning to Buffalo, though Wedge said, ``We'll play it by ear.''

However, Jake Westbrook still is scheduled to be summoned from Buffalo to start Aug. 12, then remain in the rotation.
