National League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, July 27th (All times eastern)

Los Angeles Dodgers (53-50) at Arizona Diamondbacks (56-48), 4:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Hideo Nomo (11-8, 2.78) Arizona - Curt Schilling (5-5, 3.07)

(Sports Network) - A good pitching matchup, combined with a pair of anemic offenses, could make for another low-scoring contest today, as the Los Angeles Dodgers complete a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark.

Arizona won 1-0 yesterday as Elmer Dessens threw seven scoreless innings and drove in the game's only run. Incredibly, the teams have totaled just 13 runs in the last five meetings with the Dodgers scoring only five times. The Dodgers have managed just five runs in their last four contests. LA is 15-40 this season when scoring three runs or less.

Arizona's offense hasn't been much better lately, as the Diamondbacks have scored just 13 runs in their last eight games. Despite the offensive woes, the Diamondbacks are within two games of Philadelphia for the wild card spot in the National League. Arizona has won consecutive one-run games after losing six straight contests and will try to sweep the series today.

Los Angeles, which is 4 1/2 games behind the Phillies, has lost six of its last eight games.

Today's pitching duel between Los Angeles righthander Hideo Nomo and Arizona fireballer Curt Schilling will likely produce another defensive battle.

Nomo has won his last two starts, having surrendered just one earned run in 13 innings. The 34-year-old, who hasn't lost in his last three outings, has allowed three earned runs or less in 17 of his 22 starts this season. Additionally, he has thrown at least seven innings in all but four of those outings. Nomo also leads the National League in opponents batting average (.200) and he's 6-2 in 10 road starts this season.

Nomo threw a four-hit shutout in his first start of the season, March 31 at Bank One Ballpark. He lost 2-1 to the Diamondbacks on July 6 in Los Angeles and holds a career mark of 3-4 in nine games versus Arizona.

Schilling is 1-2 since returning from the disabled list and is coming off a loss at San Francisco on Tuesday, when he threw seven innings. The righty is 3-4 against NL West teams this season, but over the past three seasons, he is 25-7 with a 2.93 ERA in 42 games (41 starts) against NL West foes with Arizona going 32-9 in his starts.

Schilling is 13-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 31 career games (26 starts) versus the Dodgers. In his only start versus Los Angeles this season, he did not get a decision in Arizona's 5-4, 10-inning win on April 1, tossing 7 1/3 innings.

LA outfielder Rickey Henderson needs three more homers to join Barry Bonds as the only players in history with 300 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

Arizona leads the season series, 6-5.

Arizona third baseman Shea Hillenbrand has an 11-game hitting streak.

Atlanta Braves (68-35) at Montreal Expos (53-51), 1:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Greg Maddux (9-8, 4.36) Montreal - Tomo Ohka (7-10, 4.58)

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves try to continue their offensive surge against the Expos today as the teams battle in the third contest of a four- game series at Olympic Stadium.

Last night, Andruw Jones ended 4-for-5 with three runs batted in as part of Atlanta's 15-4 rout. Gary Sheffield homered and went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in the win. Javy Lopez added a three-run triple for the NL East-leading Braves, who have won 16 of their last 20 contests.

Wil Cordero slapped three hits while Brad Wilkerson and Orlando Cabrera homered for the Expos, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Despite the loss, the Expos are still within five games of the Phillies for the NL wild card.

Lopez has been on a tear recently, as he's 18-for-35 with five homers and 18 RBI over his nine-game hitting streak.

Greg Maddux heads to the mound today for Atlanta, as he tries for win No. 10 this season. The four-time NL Cy Young winner has won at least 15 games in every season since 1987, his second year in the majors. He's come on strong lately, winning three straight starts and is unbeaten in his last four outings.

Maddux is 23-16 lifetime against the Expos, but he lost his only decision to Montreal this year.

Tomo Ohka will toe the rubber for the Expos today. The righthander is 0-3 over his last four starts and hasn't won since June 29 at Toronto. Ohka has also lost four consecutive decisions against Atlanta, dating back to September 3, 2001. His only win versus the Braves came one start earlier, on August 30, 2001. Over his career, he's 1-4 lifetime versus the Braves. That includes two losses this season.

The Braves have won seven of the 12 meetings this season. Atlanta has won seven of its last eight road games versus Montreal.
