Jeff Suppan allowed seven earned runs in five innings of work in his Red Sox debut earlier in the week, not a particularly impressive debut. And the Red Sox, as a team, aren?t playing great baseball right now, losers of six of their last eleven, all against sub .500 clubs. That includes four losses in six tries against the Orioles, a team that they are under .500 against for the season. Boston eked out a late win on Saturday night, beating up on the Baltimore bullpen, but they certainly didn?t dominate the game like two dollar favorites are supposed to. The Orioles are 15-9 since the All Star break, playing very good baseball for Mike Hargrove despite a lineup that is ravaged with injuries ? leading hitter Melvin Mora is the latest to go on the DL. But their big bats in the middle of the lineup - -Matos, Gibbons and Batista ? all remain healthy and in good form. So is Sunday?s starter, Jason Johnson, in the midst of his best season in the big leagues. The Red Sox are hitting just .163 against Johnson in two starts this season, both games won by the Orioles. The price is certainly right to back Johnson on Sunday, looking for him to make it three straight against the BoSox.
