As Derek Jeter gets closer and closer to a major milestone, the New York Yankees are hopeful they can welcome back one of the other linchpins of the franchise.

Closer Mariano Rivera could be available on Sunday when the Yankees look for their ninth win in 10 games as they close out a four-game road set against the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York (87-49) got Jeter back in the lineup for Saturday's 6-4 win after the Yankee captain sat out Friday's 6-0 loss. Jeter had two hits, leaving him seven shy of breaking the Yankees record held by Lou Gehrig (2,721).

While the New York shortstop has become an iconic figure with baseball's most successful franchise, so too has Rivera, who has not pitched since Tuesday at Baltimore. Rivera has been resting a sore left groin.

The closer threw "almost 20 pitches" in a bullpen session Saturday and reported no pain, meaning he might be able to return to the mound Sunday.

"I wasn't expecting to feel anything," Rivera said. "That's how minor everything was. I just have to make sure that it's ready."

Rivera, 1-2 with a 1.78 ERA and a major league-leading 38 saves, first began to feel sore Aug. 15 in Seattle. The 39-year-old has pitched in five games since then and has converted a personal-best 34 save opportunities in a row overall.

Manager Joe Girardi said he would consult with the training staff before deciding whether to use Rivera Sunday.

New York improved to 11-4 against Toronto (60-75) with Saturday's win as Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira homered.

"It was a real important game for us to win because you don't want losing streaks to become two," Girardi said. "You want to stop if after one and get on another roll. We have a chance to win the series tomorrow and that's what you want to do."

The Yankees are 5-2 in games started by Sergio Mitre (3-1, 6.65 ERA), who will get the ball Sunday. Mitre last pitched last Saturday against the White Sox and allowed one hit over 6 1-3 innings before he left the 10-0 victory when a line drive struck him in his right forearm.

Mitre was replaced by Chad Gaudin in the rotation Thursday, but he is ready to return against Toronto.

The Blue Jays are the only team to beat Mitre this year. The right-hander allowed five runs over five innings in a 5-4 loss on Aug. 10, falling to 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA in three career starts against them.

Toronto's Brian Tallet (5-9, 5.17) will make his third start this year against the Yankees after going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in the first two. Tallet has also pitched 29 1-3 innings over 21 relief appearances against New York, posting a 3.07 ERA in that span.

Hideki Matsui is 7 for 14 with a homer against Tallet. New York is expected to rest Alex Rodriguez, who is 1 for 15 (.067) in his career versus Tallet, and catcher Jorge Posada, who is 1 for 8 (.125).

Tallet lost Tuesday at Texas when he yielded four runs over five innings in a 5-2 loss.

Chicago Cubs (68-66) at New York Mets (61-75), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Randy Wells (10-7, 2.90) New York - Mike Pelfrey (9-10, 5.03)

Right-handed surprise Randy Wells tries to add to a double- digit win total today when the playoff-clinging Chicago Cubs visit the New York Mets in the finale of a three-game weekend series at Citi Field.

The Cubs took Saturday's middle game, 5-3, briefly halting a skid that had seen them lose four of six games and tumble 11 1/2 games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League's Central Division and seven back of Colorado in pursuit of the NL wild card berth.

Derrek Lee belted two homers and drove in three runs for Chicago. It was his 21st career multi-homer game and third this season for the Cub. Lee finished with three hits and three runs scored in the win.

Aramis Ramirez added a two-run homer, while Rich Harden (9-8) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and a walk in five innings to grab the win. Harden also fanned 10 batters, and Carlos Marmol pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his ninth save of the season.

Cory Sullivan hit a solo homer for the Mets, who had a brief two-game winning streak stopped. Nelson Figueroa (2-4), who defeated the Cubs in his last start, allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings to absorb the loss.

Wells, a 27-year-old from Belleville, Illinois, reached the majors last season and had made just four relief appearances with the Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays before his insertion into an injury-riddled rotation this spring.

He's responded well, winning his 10th game in 21 starts on Tuesday, a 6 2/3- inning effort that saw him surrender just seven hits and an unearned run in a 4-1 defeat of Houston.

Wells, who has never faced the Mets, is 5-3 in his last eight starts and maintains an earned run average of less than 3.00 - 2.90 to be exact - through 133 1/3 innings of work.

He is 4-3 away from home this season with a 2.67 ERA in 64 innings.

For New York, former first-round draft pick Mike Pelfrey - ninth overall, 2005 - gets a third crack at reaching double-digit wins for the second straight season.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pounder won a career-best 13 times in 32 starts last season, topping 200 innings for the first time in his brief career.

He was 7-4 after a 9-7 win over Cincinnati on July 12 this season, but has since won just twice in nine starts while his ERA has soared from 4.47 to 5.03.

Pelfrey has never faced the Cubs.

The Cubs did take two of three meetings from the Mets when these teams faced off at Wrigley Field last weekend.

Preview: Cubs (68-66) at Mets (61-75)
Game: 3
Venue: Citi Field
Date: September 06, 2009 1:10 PM EDT

As the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets play out the season, both clubs are looking for bright spots. Chicago certainly has one in Randy Wells.

Wells can take over the NL lead for wins by a rookie Sunday when the Cubs and Mets finish a three-game series at Citi Field.

While it appears likely Chicago (68-66) won't be able to win a third straight NL Central division title, the Cubs have received a boost from Wells. Chicago has won 10 of his last 15 outings entering his first career start against the Mets (61-75).

The right-hander is tied with Philadelphia's J.A. Happ for the NL lead in wins by a rookie. He became the first Cubs rookie to win 10 games since Kerry Wood in 1998 by allowing one unearned run over 6 2-3 innings Tuesday in a 4-1 victory over Houston.

"I would've said that would be great, realistically I probably would've laughed at you. It's nice and rewarding, I can't lie," Wells said. "Just thinking at my career, my past and the road I took to get here it's nice to be recognized."

The right-hander has dropped consecutive starts on the road, where he is 4-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 10 outings.

New York is also looking to the future, and catcher Josh Thole has started two of the last three games. Thole had two hits in Saturday's 5-3 loss, giving him four in his first two big league contests.

"He works hard, and when you tell him something, he doesn't blow it off," catcher Brian Schneider told the Mets' Web site about Thole. "He does ask questions, and you can tell by what he asks what he knows and that he wants to learn."

Chicago evened this series Saturday when Derrek Lee homered twice and drove in three runs. Lee missed the previous two games to be with his wife after she gave birth to their second child.

"Derrek, obviously, was the main attraction today," manager Lou Piniella said, "and it was nice to have him back."

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez added a two-run homer. Ramirez is hitting .300 with 11 RBIs in his last 10 games.

Second baseman Luis Castillo has four hits in this series and Cory Sullivan has homered in both games for New York, which has dropped 10 of 14.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (9-10, 5.03) will face the Cubs for the first time as he tries to avoid a third straight loss. Pelfrey has pitched poorly after the All-Star break, going 2-6 with a 6.10 ERA in nine starts.

The 6-foot-7 right-hander gave up seven runs over four innings Tuesday in an 8-3 loss at Colorado.

Pelfrey is 5-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 14 starts at home this year.
