So. Cal
having trouble pulling the trigger yet on one side or the other, but here is another viewpoint (from P. Prisco)...

Manning has owned the NFC the past three seasons in games that mattered. In 2004, he went 4-0 against the NFC, including beating the Bears 41-10. In 2005, he was 2-0 in games that mattered. He started the final two that season against the Cardinals and the Seahawks, but he played less than a quarter in each since the Colts had locked up everything.

That means he was 6-0 against the NFC heading into this season, and he went 3-1 in 2006. The only loss he suffered to an NFC team in a game that mattered in the past three seasons came against the Cowboys this season on the road. Manning and the Colts beat the Giants, Eagles and Redskins in the other three.

So why does Manning own the NFC? Colts coach Tony Dungy said a lot of it has to do with the way those teams defended him. Since they don't see the Colts on a regular basis like the Jaguars, Titans and Texans and some other AFC teams do, the NFC teams have had a tendency to blitz the heck out of Manning.

That's a mistake. He eats that alive.

In 2004, when he beat all the NFC North teams, he threw 19 touchdowns and one interception in those games. That's dominating. And all of those opponents came after him, using a lot of single-high safety.

If the Bears blitz him in the Super Bowl, Manning will have similar success. The AFC teams have played Manning with more seven-man fronts with zone behind it this season, making him work for his points.

Dungy said that has led to Manning becoming an even better player. Dungy and team president Bill Polian both said this has been Manning's best season, even if the numbers might not say so. That's high praise.

There's no reason to believe it won't continue in the Super Bowl, especially since the last time we checked the Bears were representing the NFC, a conference Manning has owned.

good thing the bears primarily play a cover 2 and dont blitz much.....

however i think the bears might play wayne and harrison straight up with tillman and vasher and have everyone else play zone with an occasional zone blitz from rmj or briggs and having adawale/brown/anderson drop off into the zone......sounds like a bad plan but i think the bears will be geared to stop the run and let manning throw 45-50 passes.....the colts will gain yards (like the saints) but the key for the bears will be ending those drives in turnover or fg's not touchdowns.

now why did you you have to throw the beloved CUBS into your argument. Now they're going to have to win the World Series this fall. Bears 19-16 with a robbie gould fg with no time left.

tell dallas clark that manning owns the NFC when URLACHER puts a hit on him over the middle. I'm sure glad Manning had all those great stats against all those other teams that didn't make the Super Bowl. Bears 19- 16. remember who said it

Regarding the Colts "domination" of the NFC:

Game one of the year squeaked by Eli and the Giants on the road.

Whipped the awful 5-11 Skins in the Dome

Beat up on Philly the first week after McNabb went down...again in the dome.

Lost to the average Cowboys at Dallas.

Nice job but not quite domination. Neutral field against Da Bears may be different. By the way, would be interesting to have Lots of Rain for a Super Bowl. Don't remember it ever happening.

and 3 of the 4 NFC teams you listed above that the Colts beat this season wound up in the playoffs...whereas Chicago went 15-3 this season and two of their losses were to AFC teams. The only loss to an NFC team was Green Bay on New Years eve, and even Grossman admitted that he took the night off.

not saying I won't bet Chicago, but the AFC :mj122: the NFC this year.

colts avg 26.5 points
bears avg 27.4 points

colts deff give 21.5
bears deff give up 16.3

the numbers don't lie

Wrong Ray, when Peyton Manning is involved the numbers most definitely do lie. They have all season. The Colts could have scored big in most games this season but didnt. Ive been watching the sandbagging by Manning and the Colts offense can put up 40 every game if need be. throw this seasons stats out the window. I think this game stays right around the number. Hedge towards Bears early. Goodluck

The Bears will win this game outright and win it handily. Somewhere around 18 points. Not going to argue about it however, they have a FAR superior defense, FAR superior special teams, and an equally good offense. Regardless of what you think about Rex Grossman and his poor play at times, he has also played downright out of his mind with multiple td games multiple times this year. Drew Brees played far better than Manning all year and he got throttled by this Bear defense. I won't even go into the whole, defense wins Super Bowls cliche, because nothing could be truer.

Fat Daddy,

I agree with you, after watching what they (Chicago) did to Drew and the Saints, cant help but think they hold Peyton under wraps. Sure, they do not have the weather advantage enjoyed v. NO but a far far superior Deffense just seems to me to more than cover the lesser Offense. that said, the "lesser" Offense of Chicago becomes much better when considering Indy's ground "D".

NE with a "marginal" Offense (great QB) jumped all over Indy, I was there. It looked like NE let up.....the Bears wont.

I like Chicago...

you sound like you believe it. less sure myself. i saw plenty of gaps for exploitation in the conf champs. New Orleans didn't take advantage much, but i think Indiana will be able to. very different circumstances: warm weather, established pro qb, no home reffing bias. you bet on chi, you're betting uphill in this game.

i dont see indy letting itself be stood up and stripped like NO and other teams have been. i think manning will pass all over chi. you could see vs NO that chi has no great passing d. manning will snip the sidelines and then burn 'em deep.

Regardless of what you think about Rex Grossman and his poor play at times, he has also played downright out of his mind with multiple td games multiple times this year. far better than manning? don't see that. media hype has exaggerated grossman's ineptness, but last week was the time to cash on that insight.

what's going to be revealed in this game that no one is talking about today. that's the way to analyze the super bowl, in my opinion. the espn experts have been wrong straight down the line: they said bal over indy, they said NO over chi, they said sd over NE, they said...

manning has a history of burning bettors in big games, but i think he got past that psych hurdle two years ago. i dont see the league giving a rookie the trophy this year.
