I've watched cancer eat my old man alive. And as in anything else in this country, money trumps everything. As long as a single chemotherapy visit to Dana Farber costs 40 thousand + every week, there will be no cures. That's the dirty Secret.
That's what the average citizen doesn't get.
My old man kind of Figure this out. his doctor, a famous Dr. at Dana Farber (Dr. OH), told him their goal with cancer is to control it, and make it a chronic disease, like diabetes, not a cause of death
.
this way they can continue charging exuberant amounts of money for chemotherapy on a prolonged basis.
Shamrock, sorry to hear of your loss, and I TOTALLY AGREE with this post here, UNFORTUNATELY I lost my mother at age 53 to this dreaded disease VERY RECENTLY (7-1-08----R.I.P MOM-will always be loved and missed) and I thought to myself many of times as these "test" were being ran and the Oncologist gave different opinions along with the home nurses running in and out, "this shit is making LOTS of money for the medical field" it's hard to deal with when all you can basically do is comfort someone who realizes they are in a fight thats very difficult to walk away from a victor....some have done it and a BLESSING THAT IS to be given a second chance at life. But it made me wonder---we as a nation can create CLONES of people, dogs, chickens, and sheep....and have made a few other scientific miracles happen, but this awful disease has been around for quite sometime and theres been not many break throughs in BEATING it, the earlier its caught the better ofcourse....but something such as HIV hasnt been around for a fraction of the time and theres been leaps and bounds in the medicines made available. The medical field is a cash cow and it baffles me as to why we arent working on better quality of life for all through cures and preventions versus suppression of some sicknesses. But the government isnt shy about issuing a new shot or drug thats come back to do more harm then good in some cases (HPPV for ladies comes to mind off hand) as if we are living lab rats sometimes.
RIP-Tony Snow and the one and only lady of MY life, who gave me so much for so little on return!
If you have a spare dollar or happen to be filthy rich--dont hesitate to donate to the United Cancer Society. Its a sad sad disease and if youve been lucky enough to never witness its destruction, pray that you never do...along with changing any habits that you may have that may put you in the cross hairs of it!!!
