this is unbelievable incompetence by a sports agent....

"Owens, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, didn't file the necessary paperwork quickly enough this week to become an unrestricted free agent, according to the NFL Management Council. Owens' agent, David Joseph, will file a grievance.

"We voided the contract. There's an issue now as to whether or not the void was effective," Joseph said.

Owens was among several players required to file by a new deadline, which recently was moved up 10 days for players who signed their contracts before the league's 2001 collective bargaining agreement went into effect.

Cleveland receiver Dennis Northcutt`s agent made a similar mistake. The Browns announced Thursday that Northcutt's agent failed to void the final three years of his contract by Feb. 19, keeping him with Cleveland.

By missing the deadline, Owens is under contract to San Francisco through 2006 -- and the 49ers get an unexpected bonus in what's shaping up to be a difficult offseason."

how can these agents make this caliber of error?.....what is the recourse available to these players?.....

the cavalier attitude that thisis written about is astounding...could potentially cost these players millions...and in owens` case, could potentially tie him to a team that he seems to desperatly want to separate from......

i`d sue the bastids...what incompetence...

i.o.

i.o.

i hear you...and i see your point about the selfish, spoiled players....

my point was mainly regarding these high priced agents that take a percentage off the top and can`t even do the job properly.......

it`s their job to handle these things...they are paid handsomely....you`d think they`d be a little more attentive to criucial situations like what the deadline for filing free agent paperwork is....

even if they changed the deadline, that is utterly inexcusable,imo...

weasel, I liked how Mark Maguire did business his last few years in the league, and I agree, why pay an agent if they mess up like this?

You pay an agent because you make more money with one than you would without one. A lot of work goes into getting yourself the best deal available in an open market. Let the agent worry about that while you worry about playing ball.

Obviously in some cases there are exceptions. An example would be a max NBA player. The NBA stipulates how much a guy can get on a max deal so in that case there isn't much an agent can do. Unless I am misinformed those guys still retain agents anyway for endorsments.

McGuire was one of those exceptions. He didn't care about getting the most money, he just wanted an O.K. contract to stay in St. Louis. There are two ways to look at a situation like that. You could see McGuire as a nice guy who took a below market contract or you could see him as a person who turned his back on his union by deciding against setting a higher standard that his fellow players could use for added compensation in their own contracts. If you root for Microsoft, Real Madrid and the Yankees, then I'd say McGuire was a good guy. If you root for the little guy, you gotta see him as something of a turncoat.

Nick, I was racking my brain after your misinformed post to try to remember his numbers, and I can't. However, I don't think he was playing for pennies!

I said, "why pay an agent if they screw up like that". You can screw up enough on your own.
