Looks like Bob Taft the Republican Gov of Ohio will plead to four charges of unethical behavior this afternoon. This is a guy that ran on a platform of ethics and family values and called out many other politican's for unethical behavior. I really feel that this corruption is a result of one party holding all of the power as it eliminates all of the checks and balances within the system and leads one group to feel that they have a mandate and are above the law. Dem's in Ohio should be feeling good as this should give them a nice calling card to take into the next elections of corruption and abuses of power by the Republicans, now if the Dems actually could develop some type of platform other than the same old crap that time has passed by.

IMO...he really didn't do much of anything except allow some corporations to pay for a few rounds of golf for him, but then again he knew the rules because he helped create them about reporting any gifts over $25 so I can's have much empathy for the guy. The bottom line is that if blood was not already in the water due to some of the Gov's top aides taking gifts and some cash from lobbying groups and one of the largest contributers to the Conservative party (Tom Noe) stealing around 3 million from the Workmans Compensation fund then Taft could of got by with his transgression. Unfortunately for him, the sharks are out in full force and even if he pleads Nolo Contendere they are still going to push to get his resignation. Too many Republican's in power in the state thought they had unlimited power through a mandate of the people and now all the dirty laundry is starting to air and it is going to do damage to the party here in Ohio, but don't get me wrong if the roles were reversed and the Dem's had all the power locked up they would of abused the system just as bad.

Ohio Governor Vows to Stay in Office

Friday, August 19, 2005 3:21 p.m. ET
By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS Associated Press Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Gov. Bob Taft, a lame duck leader and now a convicted criminal for state ethics violations, said there is still important work for him to do and he will not resign.

Taft said he can remain an effective governor despite his plea of no contest Thursday to charges that he failed to report numerous golf outings since taking office in 1999. He's barred by law from seeking a third term next year.

The great-grandson of President William Howard Taft is the first Ohio governor charged with or convicted of a crime.

"I will work just as hard as I know how to improve this state and to advance this great state of Ohio," Taft said Thursday. "I hope that the people of Ohio will understand that this mistake, although serious, was unintentional."

Taft said he chose not to plead guilty but was taking responsibility, through the no-contest plea, for failing to report 52 gifts worth about $5,800, including 47 golf outings.

Franklin County Municipal Judge Mark Froehlich found him guilty and fined him the maximum $1,000 for each of four misdemeanor counts. As expected, no jail time was ordered; he could have faced up to six months per count.

In addition to the fine, the judge ordered Taft to send e-mails to Ohio newspapers and state employees apologizing for his behavior.

"I accept total responsibility for my mistake, and I'm sorry," the governor said in a statement issued shortly after his conviction.

The ethics violations were another blow to the GOP in the Republican-controlled state that won President Bush re-election. Democrats have found hope for the 2006 midterm elections in the investment scandal and a surprisingly close congressional race this month for an open seat in a GOP stronghold.

The Bush administration reacted calmly to Taft's conviction.

"Governor Taft apologized today, he has paid the fine and said it was a serious mistake, and the president accepts that," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006, said the charges are part of a "culture of corruption" in Ohio.

The governor has forced out underlings for ethics offenses, but he said those cases were different. Taft said his golf outings were mostly weekend events with friends and he didn't know they needed to be reported. The Ohio Ethics Commission found no evidence that he had given political access in exchange for the outings.

Taft, 63, entered the cramped city courtroom Thursday accompanied by his attorney, his wife and two state troopers. He stood respectfully as he apologized to Froehlich.

"As governor I have made it clear that I expect all state workers to comply and follow both the spirit and the letter of Ohio's ethics laws, and I have demanded no less of myself," Taft said.

But at a news conference minutes later, Taft said repeatedly he would not resign, saying he had too much to do in his remaining 16 months as governor.

Now, Taft must persuade voters to pass a $2 billion public works bond issue in November that contains a high-tech proposal closely associated with the governor. Voters two years ago rejected his Third Frontier plan to borrow $500 million to recruit and retain cutting-edge jobs.

We could only wish that our politicians were all corrupt with the same allegations of Taft. Just compare this guys actions to the little Clinton time line posted the other day . Yet Hillary will get a ton of votes regardless of her truly slimy past .

While I wont refute your claims against the Clinton's, I find it funny that you hate the Clinton's yet you support a slime ball like Dick Cheney who is just as much of a crook if not more than the Clinton's. So in your thought process it's okay to support liars, criminals, and people of hate as long as they are in your party.

While Taft may have committed small errors in your judgement, you are missing the whole point of why he was taken down and this in turn is one of the problems that exists within our two party political system. Taft fired or forced people to resign people in his administration whom committed the same corruption as he did but on a smaller scale. Taft ran on the ticket of bringing high moral and ethical standards as well as fiscal responsibility, yet both himself and his party must of felt that these standards only applied to others and not themselves as they have been the most corrupt administration in my lifetime in Ohio. Millions upon millions of dollars are still unaccountable within the state and this is just the tip of the iceberg as sealed documents are being requested that will further implicate the administration. Somewhere along the way our leaders that we have elected and pay their wages have lost the aspect that they work for us and that they are accountable for their actions even when they are in the majority. Until people begin to take back the power of their votes and hold these people accountable for following through on their election pledges as well as how they perform during their reign then we are going to have corruption like we are seeing in Ohio.

---Seriously--I might change my opinion of him

The last I saw-- was someone saying he must be quity of something at Halibuton--why else would he give his 7.8 million in stock options to charity?

DTB,

Well other than Cheney's two drunken driving arrests there are no other criminal arrests just as CLinton only has the perjury and obstruction charges. I don't know what is worse lying under oath or getting behind a wheel twice and taken a chance on injuring or killing innocnt folks. A bif difference is tha tCheney and Bush have not had someone like Kenneth Starr to dog them and uncover possible acts and I am convinced that if they did alot of dirt would be uncovered on Cheney. A couple of reasons to give stock options to charity , 1) taxes, 2) to keep the heat off the money he is making from the no-bid contracts awarded to Haliburton
