Tax/Moving question

I'm moving to Wisconsin tomorrow. I'm driving back and leaving my big stuff behind until I find a place, then flying down and Uhauling it back.

I'm moving for a job, so I'm wondering if I'll be able to write off the Uhaul rental, the milage on my car and/or the Uhaul, and the one-way plane ticket down here. Or at least some of that?

Also, would that go on my 2004 tax return, or 2005?

Anyone with knowledge of tax law out there that can help me? It would be appreciated.

BBC,

So if I'm reading this correctly, I probably can't deduct the one-way flight ticket, but I could deduct the milage from both my car and the the Uhaul, and the cost of the Uhaul.

I won't be online for a couple days because of the drive, but I'll be checking this when I get into Wisconsin.

1. Where in wisky are ya moving to?

2. Having done this numerous times myself.... save ALL your receipts. food, lodging, gas, (more important to keep the mileage records --- miles X .37 = cost
You can deduct everything. Is your work giving you anything for the move as well? Need to be careful with that then.

As long as you've already secured your housing and this trip is for moving and getting set up, you can deduct the plane ticket. Also, save your gas receipts, because I think you only get 12 cents/ mile on moving and not the 37 cents, so you'll be able to deduct more by declaring actual expenses.

Marine- somewhere southeast of Milwaukee. I have about six different places I'm looking at since I'll be based in multiple offices. I just brought clothes and necessities up on this run and will be staying with a buddy in Milwaukee while I look for a place. Work is not giving me a cent to move, so that won't be an issue.

BBC- I'm back in Wisconsin right now, and will be looking for housing this weekend and early next week. Once I get a place, then I'm flying back to Dallas to get the rest of my stuff to Uhaul back (probably in early December). I'll have to save the gas receipts for sure; I just tracked milage when I drove my car up this weekend.

It would be much more beneficial for me to use this on my 2005 returns rather than this year. Is that possible? I'm sure I'll be back with more questions later... thanks for the help.

well, depending on your line of work, I think you have two options:
not sure how it works tho.
It may be from the day you are getting WI taxes deducted on your paycheck that you have "completed your move"

or you could leave a sock in texas and go down and get it on Jan 2 and then be "officially moved"

You would really have to wait till december to make a move like this and carry it into next year. Remember, that plane ticket and other reciepts you have for the move have dates on them.

Let me know if you need anything in SE milwaukee, still have plenty of friends in Waukesha, and work in SE mil. area.
what line of work are you in?

I was under the impression that food and lodging wasn't deductible when it came to moving.

I recently wrote the CPA exam but I can't remember this exact detail off-hand....I can look this up and confirm.

Marine- I *was* doing sports reporting for one of the largest papers in America. But thanks to an executive scandal (I vented about it in the P+R forum), I needed to find a new job, at least full-time, which I did, thankfully, doing page design and copy editing for a company of small newspapers in SE Wisconsin. I'm looking at living in Mukwonago, but still very up in the air.

Would it be possible to reach you by email? I'd rather discuss a couple of my tax situations privately, and you seem to be quite knowledgeable on the subject.
