Death and Taxes...

Monday, April 18, 2005

By Bill O'Reilly

Death and taxes on tax day, April 15th: that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."

The House has passed a law that would repeal the death tax, but the Senate might once again vote to keep that un-American tax in place. Predictably, "The New York Times'" lead editorial today was headlined, "Long Live the Estate Tax." The liberals love the fact that the federal government can take half of your stuff when you die if you are wealthy.

Now, since the death tax kicks in at $3 million, most Americans don't have to deal with it, which is why this example of socialism is allowed in this country. Most of us simply ignore this gross violation of our private property rights.

The left hides behind the deficit to argue for the death tax, but if liberals really cared about the deficit, they'd demand a flat tax for corporations and individuals that would close all loopholes and stimulate the economy at the same time.

For example, if the U.S. government imposed a 20 percent corporate flat tax, foreign companies would move to America in droves, because most countries tax businesses at a much higher level than that. Thus, there'd be more jobs here and more people in corporations paying taxes to the U.S. government. The revenue would come pouring in, the deficit would recede.

But that's not what the left really wants. It wants income redistribution. That is, taking assets from the affluent and giving it to those less well off. Somewhere, Karl Marx (search) is glowing.

The truth is that millions of Americans pay almost nothing to their country. Those on welfare and receiving other entitlements like housing subsidies and food stamps are being supported by the rest of us who pay their own way.

Now, some of these Americans deserve the helping hand and some don't. But the government doesn't differentiate. If you are poor because of addiction, laziness or apathy, the government is apathetic. It doesn't care. You get the handout.

But what liberals really want is more than a handout. They want subsidies that would lift the poor into the middle class. They want Americans who succeed to support those who fail, no matter what the circumstance.

In addition to the federal government, 19 states and D.C. also have death taxes, more seizure of private property. This isn't in the Constitution, where private property is supposed to be protected from seizure.

It is time for Americans to decide just what kind of country we want. We should vote on the death tax. Let's have a referendum on capitalism. And the next time these closet socialists scream about taxing the rich, point out that all Americans should be treated equally. If you want to live in Havana, go there.

And that's "The Memo."

No More Money Waste

Now that most of us have settled up with the federal government by paying our income taxes, let's take a look at how they are misspending our money.

The Heritage Foundation is out with a timely report that contains the top 10 examples of government waste.

For example, did you know that $25 billion is missing from the Treasury Department? What do they care? They only print money. You and I have to earn it.

The Pentagon also bought 270,000 commercial airline tickets worth $100 million. Not only did they not use the tickets, they never asked for a refund, though the tickets are fully refundable.

At the Agriculture Department, which has more employees than America has farmers, employees used government credit cards to pay for Ozzy Osbourne tickets, tattoos, lingerie, bartender school tuition and even make their personal car payments.

And we are told that government can't afford any more tax cuts? We can't afford for them to keep spending like this.

There's plenty more. Medicare overspends and wastes more money than any other government program, but because Medicare is popular, politicians demagogue whenever anyone wants to cut unnecessary costs.

Did you know the Education Department certified student loans to a college that doesn't exist? Congress faked the documents to see what the department would do.

I wonder how many other examples of waste, fraud and abuse exist at the Education Department.

The Army Corps of Engineers manipulates data to get more congressional funding and the government's earned income tax credits squanders about one-third of the program's costs in overpayments.

Then, there are numerous examples of government creating new programs that duplicate existing ones. For example, there are 342 duplicative economic development programs.

Think of this when your government tells you at tax time, or any time, it can't afford to let you keep more of your money. Tell Congress you can't afford to let them waste any more of it.

And that's Column One for this week.

Lots of people, Left and Right, scream for flat taxes with no loopholes. Is that another topic like illegal immigration that will never actually be tackled by either political side because both stand to gain from it, while yet again the decent hard working middle is squeezed?

O'Reilly's back to sounding like a jackass on that rant. Blaming all the tax problems on the left. If you left it purely in the hands of the right - the injustices would be in no way improved.

I love the way the term "estate" tax became "death" tax as a certain side began pushing it's agenda. And I love trying to convince poor and middle income people that any kind of taxing of mega-wealthy is equal to socialism. ...And most of the time, the poor and middle class buy into the logic - NOT REALIZING - that it will only be costing them more eventually because the money missed has to now come from them and everyone else.

The gap between wealthy and working class is at it's greatest since the 30's. YET - we are supposed to believe we are in danger of becoming socialist? Whatever.

a couple questions Smurph
1st "And I love trying to convince poor and middle income people that any kind of taxing of mega-wealthy is equal to socialism"

The estate tax a few years back before it was revamped by the Rebs was on assets over$600,000--do you call that Mega wealthy?
--and when you take from one class of people and give to another that is socialism and redistribution of assetts regardless how you want to refer to it.

"The gap between wealthy and working class is at it's greatest since the 30's"

Explain to me how you can be wealthy and not in the working class. Now if your referring to wealthy as the Bill gates ect your speaking of less than .02% of population. If you would define wealthy we could figure the gap.

Reminds me of Edwards and Kerry and their 2 America approach when they got on their soapboxes with there best court room theatrics and tearful eyes trying to con the little guy into believing they were their defenders-- but truth of matter is Kerry has stiffed chartibles contributions on tax returns for "0" dollars and Edwards sheltered his chips in special trust to to stiff the medicare recipients out of over $400,000.

In contrast Cheney gave 8 million to charity in one year and Bush about $70,000 on last return.

---and tax wise Bush paid bout 31% of income in federal taxes--Kerry about 12.5% so my friend you tell me --WHO talks the talk and who walks the walk?????????????????

And most of the time, the poor and middle class buy into the logic - NOT REALIZING - that it will only be costing them more eventually because the money missed has to now come from them and everyone else.

So are you saying this makes it right?

Hate to say it, dogs, but smurphy after a bender makes a lot more sense than O'Reilly.

Talking about what the founding fathers would have wanted? They certainly wouldn't have been in favor of inherited wealth and status. That's why I think the estate tax is a wonderful way the government can steer public policy.

We're never going to agree on this issue as we have fundamentally different views on taxation, but the estate tax exclusion was first going to go away in full force in 2011.

This was so that W's tax plan that was formulated in a boom economy in 1999, enforced even though we were in a recession in 2001 would be revenue neutral. The plan assumed an economy growth rate of 10% (far greater than the 3% growth assumption that he's now using for his Social Security evaluations - but that's another story) and they still needed to repeal the estate tax exclusion in 2011.

So what's changed since 1999 that makes this permanent exclusion make sense now? How can a government continue to pay out more than they take in and not have a Latin American type of currency deflation?

So True BBC-- but I would like to see them cut the spending not increase taxes to balance the scales. Giving 3rd world countries free money and loans that are never repaid would be my 1st stop --especially the ones that protest against us.

--and entitlement programs like Bush medicare reform which is a quaranteed on going and escalating expense is another sore spot.

I am glad we are all in agreement our friend Smurphmust have had a little buzz :)

Yeah, that was a good post by Smurph. Probably still sleeping it off. Hope he's ok.

Speaking of that, where has chanman been? I don't think he's posted since the Super Bowl party, at which he enjoyed himself quite a bit.

Oh man! I knew I was drunk somewhere on this board. Speedy recovery, good as new. Sorry for the insane rant. Thanks for caring - you all must be bleeding heart liberals or something.

I can't believe I played the "Baghdad Pussy" card. Kinda leaves me with nowhere to go now, LOL.

And yes - where is Chanman????

That was my favorite part. Your post was gaining momentum all along and had the perfect conclusion with you thanking your toilet and pondering Iraqi coochie. Glad you're back in biz.

Thanks Kosar! And I wasn't even sick, just love quoting Bill Cosby when tore up I guess.

On this issue, I don't really know anything. I shouldn't have started in on it. All I know is we have a massive deficit and I have no love lost for wealthy people who inherit even more wealth. Maybe that makes me a socialist. I dunno.

Quoting The Millionaire Next Door, approximately 80% of millionaires are first generation meaning that they earned the money that they have.

From my perspective it seems that the government and anyone for the estate tax is against the 4 out of 5 income earners to pass the money they have earned on to their offspring.

It always seems that people for the estate tax have this misconception that the only people effected by this are the Rockefellers, Kennedys, and Vanderbilts. This is very far from the truth.

it's not like something new is being imposed here, right? isn't this all about repealing the tax?

how long have we had this tax? has it been a grave (no pun intended) injustice the entire time.

have we been socialist all that time, and only just now have an opportunity to get this right and be proper capitalists?
