You may have to register to view the LA Times article. The gist of it is that a teacher in Colorado is fighting the fact that he was put on paid leave after a student recorded him criticizing Bush during class and forwarded it to a conservative radio talk show host.
This really makes us (liberals) look bad. We fight to prevent teachers from promoting their religious beliefs in public schools in northern California. And rightfully so. But then this clown references Hitler when talking about Bush's State of the Union address and people are fighting the discipline that the school handed down and lawsuits are being threatened.
As some of the regulars on this board are aware, my biggest problem with a large number of conservatives is hypocrisy. This is liberal hypocrisy at its finest. How can it be suitable for a teacher to rail on against the President in the middle of class? It is just as unsuitable as handing out flyers or pamphlets promoting religious events.
Generally I am a big supporter of public education (I oppose school "choice"). That said, people in public schools only hurt their cause when they make political statements in the middle of class. We all know that the vast majority of teachers will always be liberals. That doesn't mean that those teachers should be allowed free reign to veer off course content and into the political or religious arena.
There is a proper time and place for political dissent (i.e., this forum
). It is not proper in a classroom.
