Here the deal I came home yesterday and could not get on the net. Tried all the usuals (unplug, reset, call provider, ping, and all the other things your supposed to do) After being told i needed to buy a new modem (DSL) from them (bellsouth) I went and got one from my buddy who said he had an extra one. I plugged in reset did everything including calling provider only to have them tell me that modem was bad as well. When I punch in the 192.168........... I can log on at the providers page and it tells me I am connected. (could with both Modems) However I can not get on the internet even though it says I am connected. Took my laptop and Connected very quickly at my buddies house so It is not the Laptop itsself (I dont think  ) So i guess my question is against big odds do I have two modems that are busted or could there be another reason for my sudden hlalt to surfing?????
BTW I do have a wireless router but that is of no concern as I have bypassed it trying to figure out the modem.

Thanks in advance

If you can connect to the modem directly by typing in its IP address, the Modem should have a way of testing the internet connection.

You might try --just for the test-- totally disabling your firewall.

From the sounds of it, though, it might be a problem with your DSL filter or your phone line. I guess to be certain you could bring your buddie's modem to your house and try to connect that way.

This is a good suggestion.

Or you could take the two modems from your house and try to use them at your buddy's house.

Tech guy shows up and does everything I have already done 3 times before. Calls a number says yeah its not the modem or anything else inside (NO Shit) Asks them to flush the line (or something like that) and bam just like that it is back up:shrug: Now why in the hell would they have not just done that one of the 3 times I called them. Instead there were insisting on shipping(selling) me a new modem. I ask the tech and he said "who knows I stayed on the phone with them an hour yesterday before they would do it" WTF? Oh well it is just my time and trouble, no reason they should be concerned.

the command they used is the repair command in the network connections

or by doing the following

start - run -cmd (hit enter)

type the following:

ipconfig /flusdns

I know it was just a typing error but for people who do not know, its....

ipconfig /flushdns

Yeah that was not what he said then because I had already done that twice. I dont know the exact words he used but the point is it was something that could have been done one of the times I called. It apparently is not something the tech can do on his laptop either. Makes no sense to me

Anything to do with the DNS or any networking issue is normally done from the IP not from your home network.

The same thing is correct in a small network, where the commands are run from the domain controller not the desktop in need.

You lost me, is this your way of saying you understand why they had to send someone rather than just do this when I spoke with them:shrug:

I never agree with them sending someone over but they never believe the home user. They always want their paid person to diagnose the problem even if you already know it.

I have been down that road a couple of times when I have told them what to do and they would refuse until someone came and looked at it.
