I didn't play this game because as you know Iona is one of those Jeckyl/Hyde MAAC teams and St. Peter's seems to have improved of late: I felt 12.5 was just too many to ask Iona to cover. I'm also leery of those home-home match-ups where the home team won big in the first game on the road.
I remember their previous match-up pretty well. This was Iona's Leland Norris' big game: he scored a career high 22 and then left the team a few games later. St. Peter's just could not hit anything; they were 16-68 (23%) from the field including 0-16 from the arc.
I think Coach Ruland had Iona pretty pumped up to play that last game, Iona was coming off two disappointing MAAC losses, 69-58 to Manhattan in the finals of the Holiday Festival tournament at MSG and a 79-70 overtime loss to Siena in New Rochelle.
St. Peter's is playing better of late; in their recent three game road trek they were 3-0 ATS at Manhattan, Rider and Canisius. In their L5, St. Peter's has hit 38% of their shots from 3 points while allowing their opponents to shoot only 24% from the arc.
Iona is 3-5 ATS at home while St. Peter's is 4-2-2 ATS on the road.
Iona has won ten games this season so far but has beaten only one team by 12.5 or more: St. Peter's.
I just don't see Ruland getting his team pumped up for this game like he did for the recent game at Manhattan. He'll save that for Iona's home game vs Marist on Thursday and the re-match at Manhattan in a couple of weeks.
There's no question that Iona has the better team but without the motivation I'd lean to St. Peter's and the points here.
I'd be interested in what Bear and Box And One have to say about this one, they also follow the MAAC very closely.
