For good TexMex try Maria's Taco Express on South Lamar, Dario's on E. 6th, El Azteca farther east on E. 6th, Santa Rita on W. 38th, Chuy's on Barton Springs Rd., and the list goes on and on.
Music: Continental Club, Broken Spoke(big dance floor), ACL (downtown next to W Hotel). Live music and food on South Congress practically everywhere.
Great entertainment district west of Congress between 2nd and 6th streets. Good eating, DL

Dog Lover with some great advice.

Tex-Mex, I would hit Chuy's, which has a good vibe and probably appeals more to an out-of-towner than it does a local.

BBQ - Go have a beef rib or two at Iron Works, they're huge.

You need to walk 6th Street later in the evening when everything is up and running. It's always amazing to walk by 1 place that has Honky Tonk music playing live and then 25 steps further down you've got Rock, Alternative or Rap going. It is definitely a city that has something for everyone.

I'm a fan of Antone's

Continental club - http://www.continentalclub.com/Austin.html

The city of Austin website is pretty informative - http://www.austintexas.org/

Austin 360 is the other site to use for searching - http://www.austin360.com/

From South Congress, running North and South, to 2nd through 6th Street running East and West, there is enough to hold you over for a few months.

If you are staying close, I would advise just taking a cab. APD is tough on Drunk Drivers and will stop vehicles for minor violations in hopes of landing a DWI.

Have Fun

Already a bunch of good ideas posted. My favorite Mexican food restarurant is Matt's El Rancho on Lamar St. For music, bars and general people watching, walk up and down 6th street and you'll have a great time.

Oh, and Hook'em Horns!
