was reading a blog where tennesse offense is really struggling, qb. ainge continues to be a turnover machine. also replacing the linebackers has been another concern...
cal has a very strong advantage at skill positions, take cal!

as i look at pac-10 so far i am going to say something that will ruffle alot of feathers, THE PAC-10 WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST CONFERENCES' IN AMERICA. l
ok i said it but 1 week will not confrim this, look at whole season.

I was unsure about this game until I saw JohnnyB on Cal!! The guy knows the Pac-10...bottom line! I'll be on CAL in this one! Tenn as home dogs to open a season?? Has that ever happened before? When it's too good to be true....it usually is. I like CAL by 10+.....GL!

Summer's goin well! Busy though.......Hopefully we nail this CAL game! I don't really have any facts to back it up, but just gotta strong gut feeling Arkansas covers or possibly wins SU over USC. Don't know why I like it so much.....am I crazy? What's your opinion on the game? I know ARK has one of their main guys out I believe, but I just like Houston Nutt as home dogs in big games. Played TX tough a couple years ago, but I just don't know much about their team yet and we all know SC has the talent edge......

No. 12 California @ No. 22 Tennessee: Cal-Tennessee.

Cal has a great chance to not only win the Pac-10, but to run the entire table and get to the BCS championship game.

Of course, thoughts of Cal running the table in 2006 makes you wonder where USC fits into the hypothesis. After all, USC is reloading, not rebuilding. However, the Trojans have a ton of receipts coming their way from the handfuls of obnoxious Pac-10 blowouts they've dealt out over the past few seasons. For many conference foes, 2006 looks like the best chance to turn in those receipts. While the Leinart-Bush-White blowouts were fun to watch, you know that the Bellottis, Koetters, and Dorrells of the West Coast haven't forgotten. In August, that No. 3 AP preseason ranking looks pretty fit out in Troy, but that 3 could have a 1 or 2 stuck in front of it by November.

With USC possibly out of the way for a season, let's look at the dudes from Berkeley. Cal's offense should be difficult to stop as always, but they also should have one of the nation's top defenses this season, led by a defensive line that might be the nation's best. So, on Nov. 18, I'm looking for Tedford's bunch to go into the Coliseum and get that USC win they should've scored that day Aaron Rodgers couldn't miss back in 2004. But Cal can't have an effect on the national championship picture simply by beating USC.

Unfortunately for the Golden Bears, one of their biggest hurdles will come in the first game of the season, a trip to ol' Rocky Top. Tennessee's been down lately, but they're not out, especially with offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe returning to call the plays as he did throughout the glory years of the 1990s. Tennessee's even coming into the season ranked 22nd, pretty good for a 5-6 team that only returns 11 starters and lost 28 lettermen. If Cal's two-headed monster at running back (Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett) can run roughshod through a Vol defense that lost six of their front seven starters, the Bears should go home happy, and maybe even eventually Google "things to do in Glendale, AZ in January."

However, if we see the Cal offense spending more time struggling in Knoxville than celebrating in its checkerboard end zones, we'll see our first title contender fall before Labor Day. The Tennessee game is a big-time statement game for Cal.

I thought this was a good article about the upcoming game. Should be a good one.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -

At the University of Tennessee, one losing season is enough to send the faithful into a frenzy, questioning the coach's competence and wondering if it's time for a change.

And that's even if the coach, Phillip Fulmer, has won 80 percent of his games and a national title during 13 seasons as the top dog on Rocky Top.
Coming off a 5-6 season, Tennessee's worst since 1988, Fulmer and his program appear to be at a crossroads.

"Nobody is more passionate about being successful or winning here at Tennessee than I am," Fulmer said. "It's not a job, it's my life - other than my family and my faith. I don't apologize for that. I like that."

Another losing season might not cost Fulmer his job, but it would certainly give athletic director Mike Hamilton something to think about.

Fulmer, the longest-tenured Southeastern Conference coach, is fiercely protective of the program he's guided since taking over from Johnny Majors in 1992. After all, Fulmer has been either a player or coach at Tennessee since 1968, leaving for only six seasons in the 1970s to be an assistant at Wichita State and Vanderbilt.

"I am competitive. I don't want to go back there again. I feel like every year we should be winning a championship," Fulmer said.

Fulmer is quick to point out that, despite last season, Tennessee is 95-30 over the past 10 years, the best record of any SEC school.

He calls last year "an aberration" and "a wake-up call," and he's tired of talking about it. But some critics say the program has been in decline since the days of Peyton Manning in the late 1990s and the 1998 national championship.

For now, the athletic director remains optimistic.

"If the fundamental question is 'Have you lost confidence in Phillip Fulmer?' the answer is, 'Absolutely no.' I haven't. In fact, I think I've got as much confidence as I've ever had because of the way I've seen him respond to adversity in the offseason," Hamilton said.

Not all Fulmer's concerns have been on the field. Between last January and July, eight players were either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking.

This summer Fulmer has dismissed two players - an incoming freshman arrested for DUI and a redshirt freshman who made an unspecified inappropriate comment at a restaurant. Another player was suspended for four games after an off-duty officer said he waved what looked like a gun at him. Two other players have been suspended following arrests since May.

Despite the troubles, Hamilton said donations to the athletic program have increased, and the department is moving ahead with a renovation of Neyland Stadium.

Football drives the athletic department, bringing in 49 percent of revenue and paying for other sports and facilities. It also brings national recognition to the university.

"There's a lot riding on it, but you can't be consumed by that," Hamilton said.

The athletic department wants to bank on more success under Fulmer, who is making a little more than $2 million a year.

Fulmer said he noticed problems before last season, and the return of David Cutcliffe as offensive coordinator helped him see the shortcomings even more. One that became apparent quickly in the spring was that practice had lost its edge.

"We assumed too much. I don't think it was a conscious thing or anything like that. Sometimes you don't see all that you should," he said.

Cutcliffe saw it and started to increase the intensity in spring drills.

Cutcliffe took back the old job he left to be Mississippi's head coach at the end of the 1998 season. He replaces Randy Sanders, his successor, who resigned in the middle of last season.

Fulmer fired two assistants - receivers coach Pat Washington and offensive line coach Jimmy Ray Stephens. He moved running backs coach Trooper Taylor to receivers and hired two new assistants. Washington had been at Tennessee since 1995 and Stephens since 2002 after leaving Florida.

Fulmer said he was thinking of making changes a few seasons back, but the Vols ended up winning the SEC East division in 2004. They lost to Auburn in the SEC title game.

Asked if the '04 title produced a false sense of confidence, Fulmer said, "Maybe. In football or any organization, there is balance you have. Call it chemistry, whatever you want to call it, there's a balance you have and if that gets out of balance some way or another it kind of mushrooms on you."

Then Fulmer realizes he's slipped into talking about 2005 again.

"I've been through all that a thousand times with everybody. This is a new year and a new season," he said. "I am extremely excited with what we've got started here so far."

ill ride Lynch in his game that puts him in the Heisman mix...what better way to silence the doubters then going into Knoxville and taking care of business, with Forsett (all Pac-2nd team) to come in when Lynch needs a break, and Cal's best defense in 6 years...Cal wins this game, and beats USC...im riding this team, do or die...That stable of Running Backs honestly is the closest thing I can compare to Bush/White...Cal BIG

I just saw the college lines posted at the majority of the books and they all have TENN opening as -2 favorites? I've been reading all over here that CAL was -3 favorites. Some of these lines posted on here are way off to the lines the books have out.......

I gotta say I think the line is pretty accurate. If Cal plays Longshore then they will have an inexperienced QB playing against a solid SEC defense in a very difficult atmosphere.

Outside of that Cal is stacked and they aren't in the worst shape at QB either. They have 3 guys that can play QB. I definitely like that the line seems a bit slanted towards some Tennessee action as I do think Cal is the better team here

I don't see how UT is favored in this game. Especially with the way they looked Sat. Cal getting a great deal of hype and still getting 2 points??

Makes me kind of like the Vols or stay away

I agree with Skipper. While I think that the line stinks a little, I couldn't play Cal in this spot.... (i.e traveling across the counrty to play first game of the year in one of the most hostile stadiums in the nation) For me, I will likely pass, but if I had a gun to my head, it would be Tennessee -2.

Keep in mind that Tenn did lose some quality starters in the defensive front 7.... But I suspect that even the rebuilt group will be tough against the run, as always. Can an inexperienced QB for Cal put the team on his back?
