I was just wondering if you could pass along any info on these two locations:

Louisville, Ky

Nashville, Tn

Even though I just recently moved, I may have another one coming up as it looks as my job is going to pretty much force a transfer on me. I would have my choice of either one. I realize I would have to visit both places to really understand them, but any info or good websites to get some info on them would be great. Good Neighborhoods would be a bonus too....

Crime, Climate, Traffic, Friendliness, Housing etc.

Job market isnt a factor obviously & cost of living really isnt important either.

If you know both cities which would choose for a married couple early 30's w/ no kids.

Thanks! :toast:

Information on both goes back 15 or so years, with 'some' about Louisville and 'a lot' about Nashville, but it's not even close.

Nashville.

I'm sure the Nashville guys will chime in with more specific (any?) info, but I really, really enjoyed the time I spent there.

Louisville sucks, comparatively.

Thanks. One vote Nashville.

Tampa was going to be the third option given to me by the company, but the wife won't move to FLA. (I would prefer it myself)

Ya Tampa would be great.. St. Pete and Orlando are not far away. All kinds of spring training games to choose from and the Devil Rays are worth buying a ticket for now.. Too bad you can't talk her into it.

I'm decently familiar with Louisville and currently live in Nashville. My wife and I are in are early 30s and have two young kids.

Louisville has improved significantly over the last decade, but it still lacks certain things, imo. To me, Louisville has always felt like an insider's town. But the city has improved its nightlife offerings greatly. Outside of minor league baseball, there are no professional sports that come to mind. Although, their baseball field is pretty damn nice!

We moved to Nashville from Atlanta, and I couldn't be happier here. I can't say enough about the community feel for a city of a little more than a million people. Some people find this as a flaw. I do not.

Nashville is a good sports town (compared to Atlanta which is dreadful). For the most part, people are SEC football fans (you'll hate the color orange by week 2!) and Titans. The Predators are starting to make a real run for a fan base here as well after being threatened to leave town in the last off-season.

For your age group, you will probably want to move to Green Hills (a little pricey), East Nashville (being renovated), or the Vandy/Hillsboro Village area if you are going to move to Nashville.

Many people will talk about Franklin, but that ain't Nashville, people! It's Franklin.... but Franklin is a very nice place to live.

You wouldn't go wrong with Louisville, but I would move to Nashville every time if given the choice.

Great info! Thanks so much.

One concern from my brief reading up on Nashville is the violent crime ratings are high. Do you ever not feel safe? Dont get me wrong, I have lived in Killadelphia, so I dont scare easily, but I wouldnt want to move to a 'bad area' at this stage of my life w/ a child planned in the next year.

Does Nashville have a southern feel to it at all...I know it's country, but is it southern at all? We used to live in Charleston SC & I absolutely loved that place.

Ronnie will have a different take on the crime due to working downtown in the bar scene. When I saw the stats on Nashville after living here for two years, I was completely shocked that they were that high. I still can't put my finger on it.

I can't imagine a safer big city. I live about 10 minutes from downtown/stadium.

Nashville is a lot less "southern" than Charleston... but there's not too many places that can offer that kind of charm.

On your statement of moving to a "bad area" then I would somewhat rule out the "up and coming" East Nashville area. That's realtor speak for "still shitty but we're trying to move better people in here" or "hey, it's cheaper than other areas in the city!" (I'll probably get slaughtered by someone here who lives in East Nashville or knows of "some good places" there. :00hour

You sure sound like you know a lot about Louisville dikwad. :gf:

lol

I know enough that compared to Nashville, Louisville sucks.

You might have noticed that that sentiment is recurring by everybody in this thread. Christ, Wayne compared Louisville to Detroit :scared , but I guess you chose me to direct your remarks to.

That's cool.

Why don't you tell 3 seconds why Louisville is better?

He's asking for opinions. Don't be scared to share!

3 seconds, one big drawback for you down there in either city will be the lack of Patriots fans. I know it will be hard for you, but I think time will help you get over it... :tongue :D

I don't think Louisville sucks by any stretch. There are much worse cities you could be placed in... such as Detroit and Cincy. :)

If you haven't been to Louisville in the last decade, there have been a lot of improvements made. but I would still choose Nashville over it.

Alot closer to Cowboy country though!!

Yeah I would think I would pass on the 'up & coming' for the more expensive established, nice & safe.

If & when we move we will rent for 6 months - 1 year. I refuse to move & buy instantly just in case.

We would be willing to pay up to $1400 - 1500 for a rental & would be looking to buy in the 400K neighborhood for houses. I would hope that is enough to get into the better areas of either location.

Tampa again this may be a different story..not sure....but thx to the wife Tampa is out...grrr.

Great info so far...please continue to add on if anyone esle is fimiliar & can lend some insight.

Nashvegas by a long shot.... L'ville = Memphis in terms of crime :scared

Nashville = Lexington? :shrug:

If you lived in Philadelphia, Nashville will be a walk in the park...Centennial Park to be precise! ;)

You sound like you want to be in Hillsboro or Greenhills area, unless you want a little more rural surroundings. Traffic isn't as bad a Atlanta, etc. and you get a lot more bang for your buck. Hermitage/Mt Juliet (further east of nashville than dawg's "east nashville" - not "franklin, uppety" - up and coming though.)

I won't quote him, but Dawg hit the high points.... Ask Jack for my e-mail and I'll try to help with what I know. :SIB

Thanks a lot! I definately dont want to go too rural , at least for a few years. I would prefer to live 'close-in' to the hustle & bustle of the city. (why staying in a safer area still)

Why do some folks call it NashVegas?

If Nashville is anything like Vegas I am in! Any casino's?

I am not going to talk trash about Nashville, because I have never lived there, however I will say about Louisville;

1) there are some very nice neighborhoods around the city, any type of property you want, except beechfront (you probably prefer the Eastside, nicer homes..)

2) very nice golf courses in the area, Valhalla, where they are playing the Ryder Cup this year was a couple miles from the house I grew up in

3) nice downtown, I would not have said this 5 years ago, but it has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years, great waterfront, triple A baseball and 4th street live,

4) Churchill Downs, where they hold the crown jewel of horse racing, the Kentucky Derby is downtown, albeit not in the nicest area

5) Caesars Riverboat Casino is across the river about 20 minutes from downtown, maybe 30 with traffic, I don't think there is a casino close to Nashville, but I could be wrong.

-those are a few things off the top of my head, I will say it doesn't have a pro team, but I would expect one to be there in the next 5-7 years, they are building a really nice basketball arena right on the river

-definitely would not say the crime is any worse in Louisville then in Nashville, but I don't have statistics to back this up, I would be interested to see them though

hope this helps, you should come to the Madjacks Golf Tournament, Belterra is about 45 minutes to an hour outside of Louisville

Those are some links to rentals in the Nashville area and as you will see, you can find a very nice place for the money you are looking to spend. When looking to buy in the 400k range, you will be able to find a very nice 3000-4000 square foot home in a nice area for that range.

Although I am obviously biased after living here since 1985, there is really not another city in the country that I want to live in and with my jobs, I have been to EVERY big city in the country and could have choice on where to live.

I am not going to say anything bad about Louisville because I like that town also. Think Nashville just has a lot more to offer. We also dont have a state income tax here BUT the damn sales tax is 9.25%! Louisville is only 20 minutes from the nearest casino BUT they are getting ready to pass casino gambling in KY and they are going to open one at the first exit from Nashville when you go into KY, only 35 miles away.

As far as sports, we have two professional teams, Titans and Predators, triple A baseball and a school that plays in the SEC {Vanderbilt}.

We also have one of the best music scenes in the world if you like live music. Great restaurants although Louisville has one of my top3 places to eat in the US, Mojito's. We also have a top notch theatre, awesome library and world class symphony if you like those. Good affordable golf courses, about a dozen or more less than $50 a round. Several lakes if your into the water scene.

Hope some of this helps, give me a shout if you want more info!

Argh! This is one of my pet peeves!

No casinos close right now. Sounds like dunclock knows a little something about one moving in to the BG area, though.

For $400K, I would either move to West Meade or Green Hills.

$1500 per month rent won't limit you much at all.
