lotta talk in the forum about Tenn..

usually comes up when they get ready to play somebody in the conference who happens to be good at the time..

my questions..

when did this Univ. last produce a SEC Champion...seems like 20 years ago..

when did the last win a National Championship..seems to me it was shortly after Peyton left..

how in the hell does the once major player in football stay so crappy..

do they even produce #1 picks in the NFL Draft:shrug:

They won their last National Championship in 1998.

That was also the last SEC title, although they played for the title in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2007

Last 1st round pick was Eric Berry

The "how in the hell does the once major player in football stay so crappy" question is easy in my opinion. Brian Kelly wanted to the job, but the former AD, Mike Hamilton, got caught up in the Lane and Monte Kiffin hype. I said at the time, on the radio, that that one hire will bring this program to a halt. I got cursed out and thrown off radio - just ask Nole - but I knew that this guy was no good. I don't think Dooley is a horrible person, but he wasn't ready for the job, and it was 10 days before signing day when he got hired.

Hope this answers your questions

thanks Skipper..

sure is a shame to see this once proud National Power slip into the ranks of "not very good year after year" teams.

Can remember watching Tenn.and ABC Game of the Week.

of course every team on the tube now..

most aren't worth watching..

It is, but cyclical. Bama was irrelevant until Saban got there. Michigan has been bad, Notre Dame as well. It will come back around. The problem today is the media and pressure is not accepting of poor seasons. I am just as guilty.

Not a Tenn fan or anything but I do like them. Really liked Fulmer and did not agree one bit with firing him. There is so much parity these days....tough to stay on top for a long time.

Really have to go by conf record in the college game b/c overall records get inflated by cupcakes. He slipped a little his last few years but would have had them back.

Combine SEC schedule and overall parity and its not easy. I do like Dooley so I hope he finds a way to win but other than that...serves Tenn right for firing Fulmer.

National championships
Tennessee claims six national championships. The following is a list of the six national championships listed by the Vols. Only four (1938, 1950, 1951, and 1998) were recognized by major polls. The Associated Press has only acknowledged Tennessee as National Champions twice, but the #1 Vols lost in the Sugar Bowl in 1951 after being named AP and UPI National Champions due to the polls being conducted before the bowl season prior to 1968 and 1974 respectively. The 1938 and 1950 championships, while not AP titles, were recognized by a majority of overall selectors/polls, and, as such, are generally recognized.[25][26]

In spite of what some of his critics may have said, I thought a lot of Fulmer myself. He bled orange, always seemed to go toe to toe with the big boys, and usually always beat who he was supposed to beat. A litle lack of recruiting may have hurt him/them there towards the end, especially in the case of Randall Cobb that ended up at Kentucky. If Cobb would have ended up at Tennessee I still think Fulmer might be the head coach.

If Fulmer would have stayed, the Vols would have been in a bowl game the last few years. However, they would have been at most an 8 or 9 win team. Better than now, yes. Long term solution, no.

It was not the firing of Fulmer, it was the hiring of Kiffin that did this program in. MANY good coaches wanted that job then. A crackhead wouldn't have taken the job when Fooley did.

Kiffin would have been a non-issue if Fulmer hadn't been fired. I'm not saying Fulmer didn't need to go, you know the situation and program a lot better than me/most. 8 or 9 wins is pretty darned good but I can see that wouldn't be good enough for the Vols in the long run; be like Kentucky winning 19/20 games in bball; just wouldn't fly. Fulmer did have some darned good O/D co-ordinators in John Chavis and I think Randy Sanders for a while. I don't think the defense has ever been the same since Chavis left; I don't know if he 'went' when Fulmer departed or what. Everybody eventually has cycles, the Vols won't be down long I bet!

Would've, could've, should've, doesn't matter. Its time they get this program turned around. As a fan, its hard to watch them play against the upper echelon of the SEC and struggle against the bottom. I turned the Florida game off in the 3rd quarter and the Bama game off at halftime.

I'm sure it was a tough call with firing Fulmer. Guy had been there something like 28 years as asst coach/head coach. Very successful. Won a national championship and only had a couple bad years.

At the same time, like I said before....8 or 9 wins isn't as good as it sounds. They play 12 games now and 3-4 of those are usually very weak non-conf definite wins. You pretty much have to go by conference record in both college fb and bb to be legit.

At the same time, its also tough when your dealing with Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, even Arkansas at times.....that's brutal.

I'm biased due to his Nebraska ties, but I for one believe the Monte Kiffin hype. You would be hard pressed to find many head coaches at the college or pro level that wouldn't like to have him as their DC.

Now Lane as the head coach, that is a gamble no doubt and it didn't pay off.

Poon - agree on Monte but here was the problem - he had no idea how to stop the spread offense
