GAME NOTES: A Big 12 Conference battle is on the docket in Manhattan tonight between the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns and the Kansas State Wildcats. Texas is alone in first place in the conference standings with a 10-2 record, two games up on 8-4 Kansas State. Obviously, the stakes in this contest are extremely high. Texas is a stellar 23-4 overall and has won its last seven games, including a 62-45 triumph over Oklahoma on Saturday. Considering that the Longhorns also beat Texas A&M by 27 points in their previous outing, the team is playing with a tremendous amount of confidence right now. The opposite can be said of K-State, which has lost its last two games and three of the last four overall. On Saturday, the Wildcats dropped a 92-86 decision to Baylor, and that setback was proceeded by a seven-point loss to a mediocre Nebraska squad. Kansas State holds a 9-7 edge in the all-time series with Texas, and the Wildcats won the most recent meeting by a 73-72 final last season.

The strength of the Texas team is its backcourt, as the duo of D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams leads the way. Augustin paces the club with 19.1 ppg, and he has dished out 161 assists against 72 turnovers. Abrams contributes 16.7 ppg, and he has recorded 46 steals. Damion James is a freakishly athletic forward who is netting 13.0 ppg while ripping down 10.6 rpg. Connor Atchley rounds out a foursome of double-digit scorers for UT with 10.1 ppg from his center position, and he has blocked 54 shots as well. Defensively, Texas is limiting its opponents to 64.1 ppg on 39.2 percent shooting from the field. In the romp over Oklahoma on Saturday, Augustin tallied 19 points. James contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Longhorns, who won despite shooting a lowly 2- of-19 from three-point range. Tremendous team defense and a low total of seven turnovers were key to the triumph.

Michael Beasley is just a freshman, but the Kansas State phenom may very well be the best player we have seen in the college game in recent memory. In a loss to Baylor on Saturday, Beasley exploded for a Big 12-record 44 points. He also pulled down 13 rebounds for his 23rd double-double of the season, breaking Carmelo Anthony's NCAA freshman record. Fellow standout Bill Walker racked up 31 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats in the setback against Baylor, but he and Beasley simply didn't get enough support from their teammates. Beasley is scoring 26.1 ppg while pulling down 12.5 rpg, as he leads the Big 12 in both categories. The gifted forward is shooting 54.6 percent from the floor with the power to dominate the paint and score from out on the perimeter. He has blocked 42 shots and recorded 36 steals, and Beasley is considered to be a lock for the first pick in the next NBA Draft if he leaves school after only one year. Walker provides 16.8 ppg as the club's second scoring option.

Expect Kansas State to put on a show in front of the home crowd, as Beasley will clearly be the best player on the court. Beasley and Walker form an outstanding duo, and they will hold off a tremendously talented Texas squad.
