Sorry this is so late.Thank you all for the honor of being just nominated in the poll.....everyone on that list is a winner....and many not on the list....but that was really nice...I do appreciate that..

Today after school I was in the hallway b.s ing with some hall monitors, custodians and janitors.A lot of them when they were students played hoops for the school. They all knew me as the opposing coach because my team played against them. They all have bs stories about how much they scored against my team and what they did to my star players. But I always remind them that I was 8-0 against them...3 of those wins were by 1 pt....these guys all make up excuses about the refs,etc....one of them said" box, tell everyone the story about your last day at your old school". So I repeated it to them.....I told this story here many yrs ago and will tell it again...

I had taught and coached at SHS for 23 yrs...1974-1997....varsity hoops coach..I just took an adm job at another school and was retiring from coaching...my last day was a friday and I'd would start at my other school on Monday....it was late friday afternoon and the sky was grey..all the parties and goodbyes had taken place earlier...all the teachers had left for the weekend. I was the only person left in the school..I only had one box left in my office....I walked down into the gym for my final goodbye....the lights were off so the gym was somewhat dark... I walked over to the bleachers and sat where I had sat for 23 yrs as the coach....I looked up on the walls and saw all the banners my teams had won...13 sectional banners, 3 state final banners,etc,etc...I was looking at each one thinking of each team and players..many teams had players that were killed or dead...I sat there looking up and was crying.....it would of been a great movie ending..more powerful then a Gene Hackman scene from Hoosiers.
Then all of a sudden the double doors of the gym opened and the hallway light reflected in the gym. Yasho, our polish janitor walked in with a mop and bucket...he see's me sitting on the bleachers and is wondering what the hell am i doing in the dark gym by myself. He then yells with his polish accent.. "Get the F..k out of here. I just mopped the whole hallway and your going to ruin it..walk on the side...you bastard...He had no idea it was my last few moments of 23 yrs of my life...I started laughing and saying to myself...their is no Hollywood ending to this...it was the perfect ending to a crazy place....I walked back to my office and tried not to put foot prints on the freshly mopped floor...took my last box of momentos and walked into the parking lot....and drove off...it was a great 23 yrs...

Again thank you all.MJ's is a great place to be a part of....

great story box ... you have any update on the student/player that was paralyzed and you raised funds for a TV? That was another amazing story and even greater gesture on your part ... blessings bud!

Tony is definitely the real deal guys. Meant him in Vegas a few years back at the Venetian and spent part of an afternoon together talking like two old friends, but we only knew each other from MJ's.

Had a few drinks and listen to some great stories, it was a true pleasure, sure hope to see him again someday.

Congrats Tony:toast:

Box - you seem just like a helluva guy and one that I am sure former players still look up to.

One thing I learned is you know you made an impact in a player's life if they still call you "Coach". I have a feeling you are still "Coach" to hundreds of former players. Would love to meet you and sit back and talk basketball with you.

That said, the damn Ivy and MAAC are getting ready to heat up. Let's get cappin' "Coach":mj07:
