Hudson Valley area.....NY
This is a an exercise that we used when we took freshman students from my High school up to a place called Frost Valley for the weekend. We took about 100 freshman students who were at risk that had problems with low self esteem, little confidence in themselves, poor grades, behavior problems,etc.. We did outdoor adventure,..discussions,games,team building, etc

The alligator story was my favorite. This story and exercise gave everyone different "perceptions, values and attitudes in dealing with our own feelings. Its hard to find a consensus about value judgments and explore the reasons why we see people differently".
Read the story..follow the directions...try to make your list up w/o looking at everyone else's list.....once you do that then you can go back and look at everyone's list.. no cheating..no peeking.....It is amazing how many of you will have a different ranking....we don't have a lot of information..don't over think...does the name influence our judgment....do we have more sympathy with a character we relate too or don't relate too...we are not told about race or nationality of the characters. I'll come back in a day or two and rank mine.I hope there are a few out there with my exact ranking... there are no right or wrong answers.....hope everyone is doing good here in MJ's....good luck...

The Alligator River Story

There lived a woman named Abigail who was in love with a man named
Gregory. Gregory lived on the shore of a river. Abigail lived on the
opposite shore of the same river. The river that separated the two lovers
was teeming with dangerous alligators. Abigail wanted to cross the river
to be with Gregory. Unfortunately, the bridge had been washed out by a
heavy flood the previous week. So she went to ask Sinbad, a riverboat
captain, to take her across. He said he would be glad to if she would
consent to go to bed with him prior to the voyage. She promptly refused
and went to a friend named Ivan to explain her plight. Ivan did not want
to get involved at all in the situation. Abigail felt her only
alternative was to accept Sinbad's terms. Sinbad fulfilled his promise to
Abigail and delivered her into the arms of Gregory.

When Abigail told Gregory about her amorous escapade in order to cross the
river, Gregory cast her aside with disdain. Heartsick and rejected,
Abigail turned to Slug with her tale of woe. Slug, feeling compassion for
Abigail, sought out Gregory and beat him brutally. Abigail was overjoyed
at the sight of Gregory getting his due. As the sun set on the horizon,
people heard Abigail laughing at Gregory.

=====================================================================

THE EXERCISE: After reading the story, rank the five (5) characters in
the story beginning with the one whom you consider as the "most offensive"
and end with the one whom you consider the "least objectionable." That
is, the character who seems to be the most reprehensible to you should be
entered first in the list following the story, then the second most
reprehensible, and so on, with the least reprehensible or objectionable
being entered fifth. Very briefly note why you rank them in the order
that you do.

1. Abigail - a slut who constantly uses/abuses men.2. Slug - unnecessarily violent
3. Sinbad - Clever bargainer, not TOO immoral because he probably knew that Abigail's love was insincere if she accepted his offer. 4. Ivan - he was smart enough not to risk his life just so Dear Abby could get laid.
5. Gregory - my compassion goes to him. First he got emotionally whacked by Abigail's callous admission that she screwed Sinbad, then he got physically whacked by Slug, then again by Abigail laughing at him. Give the guy a break!

Is it moral to ruin this thread with your vapid self-righteousness?

My ranking goes like this:

Abagail
Slug
Sinbad
Ivan
Gregory

had a tough time deciding how to rank the top three though. Curious to see others lists.

From worst to best:

Abigail
Slug
Sinbad
Gregory
Ivan

Maybe I "cheated," but I had to edit my order. I missed a few things in the story the first time.

1. Abagail: She is a hick whore, plan and simple. I mean this girl is just way to stupid to know what a good intention is.

1. Sinbad: He is just as bad as Abagail. They deserve each other. This is the type of person that may help you, but before they do, they ask for way un called for things.

1. Slug: Plays the friend card, but still Abagail will not do him. He's a POS for not minding his business, and getting involved with things that do not concern him.

The above I rate the same, not one is better then the other, they all should live together in the same trailer.

2. Ivan: Not bad in this story. How ever he just thinks of himself.

3. Gregory: Just attracts the wrong type of people in his life. But you do feel bad for him.

I'm waiting for the twist to be revealed that shows why Gregory should be at the top of the list and Slug/Abigail at the bottom.

This story has been around for years. The one thing I always wonder about is how different the responses would be if you switched Gregory and Abigail (i.e., Gregory has to sleep with some chick to get to see Abigail). It wouldn't change my rating at all, but I've always thought there would probably be some people who would be more forgiving of a guy having sex to see his girl, as opposed to vice versa.

Abigail - Her lack of patience and need for instant gratification cost her any remaining diginity in boning Sinbad, and her true colors shown through when she rejoiced at the unwarranted beating of her former lover, whom she was so in live with the day before that she slept with an asshole.

Sinbad- I despise pricks that are looking to take advantage of people in need.

Slug - Clearly out of line in attacking Gegory. Should learn from Ivan to stay out of situations that do not involve him.

Ivan - Not a great friend to Abigail, but it was better than stepping in an making things worse like Slug.

Gregory - Dating the wrong tramp is his only issue. Could happen to anyone that dates women....

Ok, last thing and then I'll STFU... I'd be very curious to get a female perspective on this. I'm guessing a lot of women would have Gregory pretty high up on the shitbag list since he wasn't compassionate in seeing that his girlfriend did whatever she had to do to be with him. While I certainly don't agree with that, I'm guessing there would be a lot of women who feel that way (and maybe some dudes, too?).
