Jason DayRising golf star Jason Day has conceded his Australian summer is all but over even before it begins with a serious wrist injury threatening to keep him out of next month's MFS Australian Open.
The 20-year-old Queenslander has battled the past few months with a torn tendon in his right wrist that has kept him from playing competitively since October.
Day withdrew from next week's Australian PGA Championship at Coolum and is now in serious doubt to take his place in the field for the Australian Open at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney from December 13-16.
He said would rather 'err on the side of caution' in his recovery from the injury with his main priority to be 100 per cent fit for his first full season on the US PGA Tour next year.
Day said he had a cortisone injection a month ago that has him at about '80 or 90 per cent' right now, and remains confident of teeing off in the PGA Tour season opener, the Sony Open in Hawaii, in January.
"I'm not to sure how the Australian Open is looking at this stage," he told a media teleconference on Wednesday.
"I am hoping to be ready for the Open, because I really want to play it."
"I've had a fantastic year and I'd obviously like to play against the Australian greats. There are a lot of good players coming out for the Australian Open. It would be great for me to see the fans out there as well as my old buddies from the tour. It should be fun if I get to play, so fingers crossed."
Day took the golfing world by storm this year, securing his PGA Tour card after finishing fifth on the Nationwide Tour money list with US$331,542 ($378,000) and becoming the youngest winner on any of the three PGA-sanctioned tours (at 19) with victory in the Legend Financial Group Classic in July.
Less than a month later, he equalled the lowest 36-hole score in Nationwide Tour history in his last two rounds at the Cox Classic, following a third-round eight-under 62 with a closing 63 to finish second on 23-under.
Now, he only has one man in his sights - world No.1 Tiger Woods.
"I'm sure I can take him down," a confident Day said.
"My goal is to become the No.1 golfer in the world so if I can work hard on what I need to do I feel I can catch him."
"At 19, Tiger didn't win a tournament as a professional. I'm just trying to mark myself up against him."
"Next year when I'm on the Tour somehow I've got to win two tournaments because that's what he won and I want to try and keep up with him."
If he does decide to play it will be an insta fade.. this is how i make money, using articles like this :SIB
