Crowd jeers eliminated U.S. team with chants of `Osama!'

February 11, 2004
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) -- The boos nearly drowned out ``The Star-Spangled Banner,'' and a few dozen fans chanted ``Osama! Osama!'' as the United States was eliminated by Mexico in Olympic men's soccer qualifying.

A loud anti-American crowd hollered as Mexico beat the United States 4-0 Tuesday night in the under-23 tournament, claiming a berth in the Athens Olympics.

As U.S. players left the stadium for their bus, several fans -- some clutching beers -- chanted ``Osama! Osama!'' in reference to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

``It's better than having things thrown at you,'' U.S. Soccer Federation president Bob Contiguglia said Wednesday after returning to Colorado Springs, Colo. ``I was bothered by the whistling during the national anthem. It's just the way it is. You accept it. Our kids showed a lot of dignity. They didn't do silly things on the field.''

Police in riot gear held back the crowd and urged people to calm down.

``I think the fans here in Mexico are terrific; I think their patriotism and support of their team is terrific,'' U.S. coach Glenn Myernick said. ``But unless I missed something, not one of them came down on the field and kicked the ball. We were beaten by a better football team tonight, not by the fans.''

For Mexico, the game partly avenged a 2-0 loss to the United States in the second round of the 2002 World Cup, a far more important tournament involving national teams.

The U.S. men will miss the Olympics for the first time since 1980 -- when the entire American delegation boycotted the Moscow Games. Mexico also ended the United States' 19-tournament streak of qualifying for every FIFA men's outdoor event, including the World Cup, the Olympics, the World Youth Championship for players under 20 and the Under-17 World Championship.

``We all feel that these things are learning experiences and something to grow on,'' Contiguglia said. ``I don't think it's a reflection on the program; the program is doing outstandingly well. I feel bad for the kids, who don't get to go to the Olympics. It shows at that age group we're just not as strong as we are elsewhere.''

Mexico is unbeaten in 20 consecutive Olympic qualifiers since a 3-0 loss to the United States on April 26, 1992.

While both Mexican national television networks broadcast Tuesday's game live, the game was shown in the United States on closed circuit to about 190 restaurants.

No need to get uptight. This is soccer and that's the way it works. Especially when their national team has been owned by the US in the last decade (a sport that we care very little about)

Understood BBC, but for them to chant "Osama" and disrespect another country's National Anthem is in bad taste to say the least. If their country is so good, why do they try to leave so bad...

64 Illegal Immigrants Found in Small Home
From Associated Press
PERRIS, Calif.?More than 60 illegal immigrants held for ransom by smugglers were found crammed into a small Riverside County home Wednesday after one immigrant escaped and told authorities, officials said.

Three alleged smugglers also discovered at the home were taken into custody and could face state and federal charges, said Senior Patrol Agent Richard Kite, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol. The 64 men and women, from Mexico and other Central American countries, were found in a 900-square-foot home in a rural area between Riverside and Perris.

"The interior of that house was in deplorable condition," said Cpl. Dennis Gutierrez, a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. "You can just imagine 64 people stuffed in a 900-square-foot home [with] no food, little water."

Authorities believe that the immigrants were held captive until families or friends could pay for their release, Gutierrez said. Wrought-iron bars covered the home's windows, he said.

"It appears these 64 were part of an elaborate alien smuggling operation," Kite said.

The discovery came after a man escaped from the house and alerted a sheriff's deputy about 2:30 p.m. of "coyotes," or smugglers, holding him and others against their will, Gutierrez said.

Border Patrol agents assisted by sheriff's officials later raided the home, he said.

No major injuries were reported

No, I'll tell you what I am "Pissed" about, how about paying back the 29 BILLION Clinton gave you to keep your country from going entirely down the toilet, how about immigrating to our country by the LAW, how about learning the "official" language it's English if you were wondering, how about not working for substandard wages that drives everybodys wages down, how about getting insurance on your vehicles, how about not packing 25 people into a one bedroom Apt, how about not being 90% of the outstanding warrants in L.A., how about not being 85% no-shows for parole and probation appts, how about not throwing URINE bags at American soccer fans(albeit all two of them) and players ,how about you take your CORRUPT Fking GOVT to task and do something for yourselves and STOP relying on the U.S.A and its taxpayers!

Would you like me to continue b/c I have plenty more:thefinger

Most of what you said was true, but isn't this part pretty much what capitalism is all about?

Jeez, it doesn't take much to set some of you guys off. It was just a soccer game with some drunk, ingnorant, idiotic fans. I might get worked up about it under other circumstances, but consider the source.

Not for me. Understand it doesn't bother you, but try watching the planes hit the towers again and it just might p*ss you off. Not knocking your opinion, just having my say.

P.S.- The coyotes that were caught 'guarding' these ppl were Illegal Aliens from Mexico.' Too bad the Mexican soccer fans don't realize what the Taliban would do to them -Catholics. don't think they'd get the same treatment as the U.S.
