The Dawg will keep a running thread for this preseason going over the next 5 weeks. I enjoy action, and I agree with the saying that "telling a gambler to not bet on NFL preseason is lacking tell high school kids to kids to wait for marriage".

Ratings 0.5 to 3 units all season every season.

1* NY Giants +3 -105

The Bills have three QB's in the rotation with some NFL regular season experience, but that doesn't change the fact that they'll be playing with a lot of players that won't be with them come Week 1 of the regular season. That said here are some tendencies and notes gathered about these two teams.

Running the football was a problem for the Giants in 2013, a problem that the team addressed by bringing in Oakland Raiders rusher Rashad Jennings and drafting Boston College workhorse Andre Williams to join former Madden cover athlete Peyton Hillis in the backfield. Jennings rushed for 733 yards and six touchdowns in Oakland last year while Williams shined for Boston College as a physical, downhill runner that matches the presence the veteran Hillis brings. Expect plenty of runs down the middle for New York once Manning leaves the game Sunday, as Coughlin tries to build confidence in not only the running backs, but also in the offensive line.

According to reports, seventh-round offensive linemen Seantrel Henderson has been a revelation during Bills training camp. Starting camp the earliest out of the NFL franchises, reports surrounding the former top high school prospect out of the University of Miami have been positive as the Hurricanes pass blocker was never short on talent and only dropped to the last round due to character issues. Expect Henderson to get plenty of snaps in the trenches for the Bills as they look to test their rookie.

Buffalo is 0-3 in Hall of Fame Games, losing most recently to the Tennessee Titans in 2009. New York is 1-1 in the HoF Game, beating down the Texans 34-17 in 2002 in its most recent performance in the preseason contest.

The Giants are 11-1 SU and ATS when they open the preseason vs the AFC as dogs or pickem.
The Bills are 1-10-1 ATS the L/12 vs NFC teams.

Doug Marrone was 2-2 SU LY for the Bills during the preseason, going 0-2-1 ATS vs the NFC
Tom Coughlin was 1-3 and 19-21 SU overall for the Giants.

Well.............

PLAY ON any dog who played in the conference finals the previous year against a team who did not play in the conference finals the previous year. This betting system is 45-22-4 ATS, 67%, since 1996.

PLAY ON the dog in any game involving a virgin NFL head coach in his first pre-season game. This betting system is 33-18-1 ATS, 64%, since 1996.

Some NFL coaches care about preseason football and some don?t. But that doesn?t mean they don?t want to win. Where the real betting value lies is finding the guys who need to win.

It seems silly to think anyone needs to win in the preseason, but these three head coaches must kick start a winning atmosphere in order to cool their seats off before the real season starts.

Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins

According to CoachesHotSeat.com, no head coach in the NFL has a hotter chair than Philbin, who went 8-8 SU and 9-7 ATS in his second season in South Beach. The Dolphins? locker room was about as welcoming as the gals on ?Orange Is The New Black? and he did very little to curb that culture. On top of that, the Dolphins are 3-6 SU and just 1-8 ATS in the preseason under Philbin.

But nothing cures a poison franchise like winning. Even small doses of victory ? say like a strong preseason ? can quickly put recent failures in the rearview. Miami needs a little more than a successful warmup season to erase the mess Philbin made last year, but it?s a start.

Dennis Allen, Oakland Raiders

Even though Al Davis is in a better place now ? or maybe not, who knows? ? the ax can fall just as quick in Oakland. Allen has defied the franchise?s recent history and made it through two full seasons with his job intact. But back-to-back 4-12 years (12-19-1 ATS) provides about as much job security as sleeping with the boss' daughter.

The Raiders can?t decide whether they want to win now or rebuild, adding veterans like Matt Schaub and Maurice Jones-Drew to help get them through the year. There is no set business plan for the Silver and Black and rumors have already started that Allen is simply holding space until former head coach Jon Gruden gets tired of the Monday Night Football booth. Allen will need to kill that noise with some preseason wins, which haven?t been his specialty ? going just 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS in the preseason.

Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons

Smith receives a ?Get out of jail free? card for his past successes, but another season like 2013 and the Falcons head coach won?t be able to douse the flames shooting from his seat. Atlanta was a shocker last year, finishing 4-12 SU and 7-9 ATS, but can quickly show that it was a fluke by putting away a couple ?Ws? during the tune-up schedule.

The catch is Smith doesn?t give a crap about the preseason, going 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS last August and boasting a 1-11 SU and 3-9 ATS mark over the past three preseason schedules. However, 2014 is different. Smith hasn?t been under the gun like this and a Falcons fanbase that?s starving for wins will eat up some early victories, even if they don?t mean anything.

Good stuff S.D. Thank you.:0074

No problem - The Dawg enjoys passing information along.

Here are the two best and two worst NFL teams to bet during the preseason since 1995:

BEST PRESEASON BETS

Seattle Seahawks (45-27 SU, 43-26-3 ATS)

It doesn?t matter if it?s the preseason or the Super Bowl, the Seahawks are kicking ass and taking names. Seattle has been perfect the past two preseasons ? going 8-0 SU and ATS ? and is 11-1 ATS going back to the 2011 tune-up tilts.

Expectations have never been higher ? which could mean so are the preseason spreads - but that didn?t stop the Seahawks from cashing in during the regular season. Winners win ? something Seattle backers have done at a 62 percent clip in the preseason since 1995.

New York Jets (44-27 SU, 41-29-1 ATS)

Looking for value come the preseason? Gang Green is your one-stop shop for postseason profits. New York was 3-1 ATS last summer after an ugly 0-4 ATS performance in 2012 when the AFC East went a combined 1-15 ATS during the exhibition schedule.

This year, the Jets have Geno Smith and Mike Vick at the top of the QB depth chart ? preseason betting?s equivalent to capping starting pitchers when betting baseball. The schedule features Indianapolis, the Giants, Cincinnati and Philadelphia ? all teams with established starters. Look for Vick to challenge for the starting job, lighting a fire under the J-E-T-S in the preseason.

WORST PRESEASON BETS

Kansas City Chiefs (24-48 SU, 21-48-3 ATS)

Andy Reid cares about the preseason about as much as he does for counting carbs and hot yoga. But while the public consensus is ?fade Reid in the preseason?, his recent teams haven?t been that bad.

Kansas City was an indifferent 2-2 SU/ATS in its first exhibition slate under Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles finished 6-2 ATS in their final two preseason schedule with Reid on the sidelines. Overall, howver, the Chiefs have been a terrible play in August ? covering just 30 percent of the time.

Oakland Raiders (33-38 SU, 29-40-2 ATS)

Misery loves company, and preseason bettors have suffered in the AFC West. Oakland joins Kansas City as the worst of the worst in exhibition play. The Silver and Black can?t seem to cover ? no matter the time of year ? and head coach Dennis Allen is feeling the crunch because of it. Oakland is a dismal 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS during the preseason under Allen.

However, there may actually be hope, at least as far as the preseason is concerned. Allen needs to win now, not Week 1. So there?s that added motivation. And the Raiders also have a respectable QB corps, featuring Matt Schaub, Matt McGloin, and star draft pick Derek Carr, as well as a nice RB tandem in Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden ? given they survive to see the preseason.

Coaches are creatures of habit, and since they'll be the ones determining playing time for their players I like to think it's important to look for tendencies of how they prepare their teams for August football. Here is how they skippers have performed during the first week of the preseason.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys
Head Coach: Jason Garrett

Quarterback Rotation: Tony Romo, Brandon Weeden, Caleb Hanie, Dustin Vaughan (Rookie West Texas A&M)

Garrett and the Cowboys have not fared well in the preseason going 4-8 against the spread in their last 12 regular preseason games. Plus a total trend to watch for this preseason is that the Cowboys seem to just want to go thru the motions in their final game as the UNDER has gone 3-1 the last four years.

New York Giants

Head Coach: Tom Coughlin

Quarterback Rotation: Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib, Curtis Painter

Philadelphia Eagles

Head Coach: Chip Kelly

Quarterback Rotation: Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley, G. J. Kinne

There is not too much to look at for any preseason trends for head coach Chip Kelly. In his first year the Eagles went 2-2 both straight up and against the spread. However, the OVER went 3-1 in those games, which is something to keep an eye on as the Eagles preseason begins. Also, one thing that carried over from the Reid era is that the Eagles again lost their first preseason game which makes them 1-8 against the spread in the last nine opening preseason games. Philadelphia?s preseason opener this year is on Aug. 8 at Chicago.

Washington Redskins

Head Coach: Jay Gruden

Quarterback Rotation: Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy

Some solid trends going for the Redskins that Jay Gruden may went to build on. Washington went a perfect 4-0 both straight up and against the spread in last year?s preseason games, and they also have been money in their dress rehearsal games the last four years going 4-0 against the spread. This year?s dress rehearsal game for the Redskins is on Aug. 23 at Baltimore.

NFC North

Chicago Bears

Head Coach: Marc Trestman

Quarterback Rotation: Jay Cutler, Jimmy Clausen, Jordan Palmer, David Fales (Rookie San Jose State)

In Trestman?s first year as head coach of the Bears ? his prior offensive coordinator experience paid off as three of the four Bears games saw the OVER connect. In their dress rehearsal game against the Raiders the Bears scored a whopping 34 points. So let?s look for more wide-open play from Chicago as we head into this year?s preseason.

Detroit Lions

Head Coach: Jim Caldwell

Quarterback Rotation: Matthew Stafford, Kellen Moore, Dan Orlovsky, James Franklin (Rookie Missouri)

In the past two preseasons the Lions saw the OVER go a money making 6-2 ? something I feel will continue with Caldwell now the Lions new head coach. Let?s not forget Caldwell tutored a pair of quality quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Joe Flacco ? So offense is his forte. Just keep an eye on how the Lions come out offensively in their early preseason games.

Green Bay Packers

Head Coach: Mike McCarthy

Quarterback Rotation: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzien, Chase Rettig (Rookie Boston College)

Mike McCarthy and the Packers used to have a great preseason trend where the OVER hit at a super high rate ? however the oddsmakers have finally caught up with this trend and now overvalue the OVER posted in the Green Bay games ? resulting in the UNDER going 6-2 in the past two preseasons. So I would recommend that you take advantage of these high posted totals and lean towards the UNDER going forward. Plus another trend to watch this preseason is that the Packers have lost their opening preseason game the past four years. This year?s opener is on Aug. 9 at Tennessee.

Minnesota Vikings

Head Coach: Mike Zimmer

Quarterback Rotation: Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater (Rookie Louisville)

With Mike Zimmer taking over as coach of the Vikings, look for defense to be the forefront this preseason as Zimmer has been a defensive coordinator the last 14 years in the NFL. In his last two seasons as coordinator of the Bengals the UNDER was the easy winner in the Bengals dress rehearsal games. Look for this to continue this year in the Vikings dress rehearsal game on Aug. 23 at Kansas City.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons

Head Coach: Mike Smith

Quarterback Rotation: Matt Ryan, T.J. Yates, Sean Renfree, Jeff Mathews (Rookie Cornell)

One of my favorite preseason plays goes here on the Falcons as in their 'dress rehearsal' game. In the last nine years, the Falcons have gone 8-1 outscoring their opposition 203-88 not counting the 2011 abnormal preseason. This year?s 'dress rehearsal' game for the Falcons will be on Aug. 23 when they play Tennessee at home. After last year?s down season I really look for the Falcons to be very motivated coming into this dress rehearsal game and use it as a starting point to get the season on a winning note. However if we take a look at the whole body of work for the Falcons over the past two preseasons we will see that they have lost seven of their eight preseason games played ? with their only win coming in the above mentioned dress rehearsal game. And one last thing about Atlanta here is that in their first preseason game the past three years they have been dominated losing all while allowing 34, 31, and 28 points, which also made all three of these games fly OVER the posted total.

Carolina Panthers

Head Coach: Ron Rivera

Quarterback Rotation: Cam Newton (Injury- Ankle), Derek Anderson, Matt Blanchard, Joe Webb

A couple of trends have started to develop with Rivera settling in as head coach in the preseason for the Panthers. First off Rivera seems to want to look good in his dress rehearsal game going 2-0 the past two years. While in the fourth and final game, Rivera seems to just want to get this game over with as the UNDER has been the winning play the past two years. Both of these preseason finales have been against the Steelers which they finish up again on Aug. 28.

New Orleans Saints

Head Coach: Sean Payton

Quarterback Rotation: Drew Brees, Ryan Griffin, Luke McCown, Logan Kilgore (Rookie Middle Tennessee State)

A strong preseason trend we can follow with the Saints as their high octane offense sure gears up as the preseason progresses. In the past four seasons the Saints have seen the OVER go a perfect 8-0 in their last two preseason games (Week 3 & 4) of the year with 51, 57, 60, 41, 51, 61, 54, and 45 points scored. This year the Saints finish up with Indianapolis on Aug. 23 and Baltimore on Aug. 28.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Head Coach: Lovie Smith

Quarterback Rotation: Mike Glennon, Mike Kafka, Josh McCown, Alex Tanney

In his last two years in Chicago Lovie Smith had winning preseasons going 6-2 against the spread. I can see him wanting to get a winning attitude right off the bat in Tampa Bay ? so let?s look for the Buccaneers to be a team to bet this preseason. Plus the Buccaneers used to be one of my favorite trend plays in the preseason as they were 6-2 against the spread in their first preseason game ? this might be something to look into as Smith will want to win his first game as the Buccaneers head coach, especially in front of the home crowd on Aug. 8th against the Eagles.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

Head Coach: Bruce Arians

Quarterback Rotation: Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton, Ryan Lindley, Logan Thomas (Rookie Virginia Tech)

Only one year of stats for Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians for us to look at, however Arizona went 3-1 both straight up and against the spread in its four preseasons games from a year ago, with the UNDER also going 3-1. Something to keep an eye out for as this year?s preseason begins.

San Francisco 49ers

Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh

Quarterback Rotation: Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson, Blaine Gabbert, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Kory Faulkner (Rookie Southern Illinois)

Whether its preseason or regular season games, Jim Harbaugh wants to win every time his team takes the field. This sure has been a solid money maker the last two preseasons as the 49ers have gone 6-2 both straight up and against the spread. It is also important to post here that in this same timeframe San Francisco has seen the UNDER be the right play on both of their first two preseason games the past two years ? while just the opposite is true as in their dress rehearsal game and final preseason game the OVER was the winning play. Making for a solid 8-0 run for us to look forward to this year.

Seattle Seahawks

Head Coach: Pete Carroll

Quarterback Rotation: Russell Wilson, Tarvaris Jackson, Terrelle Pryor, B. J. Daniels

Usually we like to fade the Super Bowl champions in the proceeding preseason ? as how can a team be up for these early meaningless games. However if there is one exception it?s sure the Seahawks under Carroll ? as Seattle is a money making 11-1 both straight up and against the spread the past three years. Top rated preseason trend in effect here especially when you throw in this year?s quarterback rotation.

St. Louis Rams

Head Coach: Jeff Fisher

Quarterback Rotation: Sam Bradford, Shaun Hill, Garrett Gilbert (Rookie SMU), Austin Davis

In his return to coaching Jeff Fisher has already shown us a trend that can help make us some money this preseason ? as the OVER has gone 6-2 in the eight preseason games the Rams have played with Fisher calling the shots. The one other trend I found was that Fisher sure tries in the Rams dress rehearsal game where St. Louis is a perfect 2-0 ATS with both of these games being played on the road ? this year?s dress rehearsal game is on the road again as the Rams visit Cleveland on Aug. 23.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills

Head Coach: Doug Marrone

Quarterback Rotation: E.J. Manuel, Jeff Tuel, Dennis Dixon, Thad Lewis

Doug Marrone enters his second season as Buffalo?s head coach. He?s been in the NFL for seven years, from 2006-08 he served as the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints after a four-year span as the offensive line coach of the New York Jets (2002-05). With this being only Doug Marrone?s second year as a Head Coach: we don?t have much to go on for his preseason trends ? however I?ve isolated something that may give us a solid play for the Bills this preseason. Since he's still a fairly new head coach, I can see Marrone wanting to impress the home crowd in his first home game this preseason and this is backed by a strong recent trend for the Bills in the preseason ? as Buffalo is 4-0 against the spread in their first home preseason game of the year last four years.

New York Jets

Head Coach: Rex Ryan

Quarterback Rotation: Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Matt Simms, Tajh Boyd (Rookie Clemson)

The Jets have been consistent in their first and last preseason games over the last four years. Rex Ryan has never put any effort in the Jets opening preseason game, evidenced by their 0-4 against the spread. While in their last preseason game of the year Ryan and the Jets defensive coaches sure take the day off as the Jets have seen the OVER go 4-0 since 2010. So right off the bat here we have a perfect 8-0 trend on the Jets to keep an eye on this preseason.

Miami Dolphins

Head Coach: Joe Philbin

Quarterback Rotation: Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Pat Devlin, Brock Jensen ? (Rookie - North Dakota State)

This will be Philbin?s third year as head coach of the Dolphins, after going over his first two preseason campaigns, it?s very apparent that he puts very little effort into winning these meaningless games. In his first nine preseason games the Dolphins are a woeful 1-8 against the spread with their only win coming against the hapless Jaguars. So let?s make the Dolphins a definite fade this preseason.

New England Patriots

Head Coach: Bill Belichick

Quarterback Rotation: Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Jimmy Garoppolo (Rookie - Eastern Illinois)

Here is one of my top rated preseason plays, and it focuses on coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Belichick has never liked to give anything away to his opponents ? just look at one of his press conferences to see what I mean ? well something shows up in the preseason every year from New England that we can take advantage of. Week 3 of the preseason is when all teams do their dress rehearsal for the season with all starters on both sides of the ball playing into the third quarter. Well again Belichick doesn?t want his regular season Week 1 opponent to get any films to look at so he doesn?t take this game seriously ? and it show shows up in the point spread logs as the Patriots over the past six seasons are a dismal 0-6 against the spread in this situation. Just to give you an example of how strong this is in last year?s dress rehearsal against the Lions, the Patriots were crushed 40-9 as one-point underdogs. So mark down Aug. 22 on your calendar as the Patriots host Carolina in their dress rehearsal game this year.

AFC North

Cleveland Browns

Head Coach: Mike Pettine

Quarterback Rotation: Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel (R Texas A&M), Tyler Thigpen, Connor Shaw (Rookie South Carolina)

With Pettine?s specialty being defense ? let?s keep an eye out on the Browns UNDER this preseason ? as he may concentrate on what he knows best trying to build the team. Another strong trend that has developed for Cleveland is its dress rehearsal games. The Browns are 0-3, losing all of these games both straight up and against the spread with the UNDER also going 3-0. One other note ? when you see that Johnny Football will be getting the majority of the playing time in any of these Cleveland preseason games ? I feel the Browns will be a solid bet ? as his style will be perfect to easily move the ball up and down the field especially against the substitutes.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Head Coach: Mike Tomlin

Quarterback Rotation: Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones, Brandon Kay (Rookie Cincinnati)

The new CBA rules sure took its effect on the Steelers in last year?s preseason ? with Tomlin not being able to incorporate his usual intense training camp, and it showed on the field as the Steelers went 0-4 both straight up and against the spread. Something to watch for as the preseason starts this year. Plus the Steelers are on a 0-4 run in their preseason home games over the past two years all as a favorite, and 1-7 ATS overall.

Cincinnati Bengals

Head Coach: Marvin Lewis

Quarterback Rotation: Andy Dalton, Jason Campbell, AJ McCarron (Rookie Alabama), Matt Scott

With the Bengals being a consistent playoff team ? Lewis doesn?t take these preseason games too seriously ? however a strong trend has developed in the Bengals first home preseason game over the past four years ? where the Bengals are a perfect 4-0 both straight up and against the spread ? so it sure looks like Lewis wants to win this first home game for the fans. The Bengals first home game this year is on Aug. 14 versus the Jets.

Baltimore Ravens
Head Coach: John Harbaugh

Quarterback Rotation: Joe Flacco, Tyrod Taylor, Keith Wenning (Rookie Ball State)

Here we have another team that has been effected with the new CBA rule changes ? Harbaugh and the Ravens used to be a strong bet in the preseason as they mostly played low-scoring games making the UNDER the way to go. However with the less intense training camp routines now in place, the Ravens have seen the OVER go a money making 7-1 the past two preseasons. Strong trend to watch for again this year!!!

AFC South

Houston Texans
Head Coach: Bill O?Brien

Quarterback Rotation: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, Tom Savage (R Pittsburgh)

O?Brien?s offensive experience may help us make some money with the Texans this preseason ? As I found that Houston as seen the OVER be the winning play in their first preseason game the last 4 years. Plus the Texans have seen the OVER go 6-2 the past two years. So let?s look for some high-scoring games form the Texans this preseason.

Indianapolis Colts
Head Coach: Chuck Pagano

Quarterback Rotation: Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck, Chandler Harnish

With Pagano as head coach, the Colts sure like to play a very wide-open game in their first preseason game of the year ? as over the past two years a combined average of 52 points have been scored. And what a perfect opponent to open up with this year as the Jets, who have watched the OVER go 4-0 in their preseason games from a year ago. This year?s opening preseason game against the Jets will be played on Aug. 7.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Head Coach: Gus Bradley

Quarterback Rotation: Chad Henne, Blake Bortles (Rookie UCF), Ricky Stanzi, Stephen Morris (Rookie Miami)
The Jaguars have lost their dress rehearsal game in 2011 and 2012, and Gus Bradley sure continued this trend in his first year as head coach in 2013 as the Jaguars gave up 34 points against the Eagles in another double-digit loss. Let?s look for this strong trend to continue this season as Jacksonville pays a visit to Detroit on Aug. 22 for their dress rehearsal game. Plus, I have to add here that the Jaguars sure weren?t ready to play in their opening preseason game with Bradley as they were dominated at home against the Dolphins 27-3. Jacksonville?s first preseason game this year is on Aug. 8 against the Buccaneers (Tampa Bay is one of my strongest preseason plays as its a money making 6-2 ATS in its first preseason game) a perfect fit here against an underachieving Jaguars squad.

Tennessee Titans
Head Coach: Ken Whisenhunt

Quarterback Rotation: Jake Locker, Charlie Whitehurst, Tyler Wilson, Zach Mettenberger (Rookie LSU)

The Titans lost three of their four preseason games last season ? this may be something to watch for again this year ? as in his last year as the head coach of the Cardinals back in 2012, Whisenhunt went a perfect 0-4 against the spread. Plus Whisenhunt in his final two years as head coach in the preseason saw six of his last eight games go OVER the posted total.

AFC West

Denver Broncos
Head Coach: John Fox
Quarterback Rotation: Payton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Zac Dysert, Bryn Renner (Rookie North Carolina)
Strong trend has developed since John Fox has taken over as the head coach of the Broncos, as Denver has come out strong in their opening preseason game going a perfect 3-0 with all three wins as an underdog. This preseason the Broncos open up against the Super Bowl champions Seahawks ? who may have the Super Bowl hangover coming into this preseason. Plus the opposite is sure true in the Broncos dress rehearsal game under Fox where Denver has failed to cover the spread in all three games. This year?s dress rehearsal game is on Aug. 23 against Houston.

Kansas City Chiefs
Head Coach: Andy Reid

Quarterback Rotation: Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray, Aaron Murray (Rookie Georgia)

Kansas City has been one of the best fade teams in the preseason going an incredible 6-23 against the spread over the past seven years. I definitely look for more of the same this year as I look for Andy Reid to continue the tradition in Kansas City of not caring about these preseason games. Take a close look at the Chiefs first preseason game this year as Reid is 1-8 against the spread in his last nine opening preseason games in Philadelphia and Kansas City. Kansas City opens up this year at home against Cincinnati on Aug. 7.

Oakland Raiders
Head Coach: Dennis Allen

Quarterback Rotation: Matt Schaub, Derek Carr (Rookie Fresno State), Matt McGloin, Trent Edwards

Allen has continued the Raiders losing ways in the preseason already losing six of the Raiders eight preseason games with him calling the shots. Plus no matter whom the head coach is of Oakland they always seem to finish the preseason on a down note ? as in the past seven years they are a perfect 0-7 against the spread in their last preseason game of the year. This year?s finale for the Raiders is on Aug. 28 against the Seahawks at home.

San Diego Chargers
Head Coach: Mike McCoy

Quarterback Rotation: Philip Rivers, Kellen Clemens, Brad Sorensen

Now in his second season in San Diego, you can?t forget that Mike McCoy came from Denver where he was the offensive coordinator for the high powered Broncos offense. I?m curious to see what numbers the oddsmakers put up on the San Diego totals this preseason. As last preseason the Chargers under McCoy saw the OVER go 3-1. With McCoy?s offensive background watch for San Diego to continue their high scoring ways this preseason.

Wasn't able to get in here yesterday, but here are today's notes and a couple of wagers from SwanDawg!

The opening week of the NFL preseason winds down Saturday. Here's a look at betting notes for the four remaining games:

Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions (PK, 39.5)

* Browns head coach Mike Pettine isn't telling anyone about how he'll divide up the playing time - not even the players - but it's expected that Brian Hoyer and the first-team offense will see two or three series. Much of the offensive focus will be on rookie running back Terrance West, who is expected to see plenty of playing time as he looks to solidify the backup role behind Ben Tate.

* The Lions sport a new-look offense, and will have it on display against Cleveland - though it may not include wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who is questionable for the exhibition opener. Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi wouldn't say how much time quarterback Matthew Stafford would see, suggesting that would be dictated by the flow of the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants (-2.5, 37)

* The Steelers had a dreadful preseason a year ago, dropping all four games - including an 18-13 decision to the Giants in their opener nearly a year to the day before their next exhibition matchup. As it was a year ago, the early focus will be on quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones, who will both get a chance Saturday to make their case for serving as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.

* Even though the Giants are playing their second game of the exhibition season, head coach Tom Coughlin doesn't see the first-team offense playing much more than it did in the opener against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Tom Coughlin said he's still in the process of evaluating the rest of the roster, which means that quarterback Eli Manning and Co. may only see slightly more than the 15 snaps it had against Buffalo.

Green Bay Packers at Tennessee Titans (-2, 38)

* Packers head coach Mike McCarthy expects to give work to all four of his quarterbacks currently in camp against the Titans, so don't expect Aaron Rodgers to see more than one or two series of action. Seven players still in camp didn't make the trip to Tennessee due to injury, including safety Morgan Burnett (oblique strain) and tight end Colt Lyerla (knee sprain).

* Head coach Ken Whisenhunt has said both the offensive and defensive starters should expect to play 12-15 snaps against the Packers. With the Titans having emerged from training camp relatively healthy, there should be several areas of focus Saturday - including battles for starting cornerback spots and the duel between Charlie Whitehurst and rookie Zach Mettenberger for the No. 2 quarterback job.

Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals (-1.5, 37.5)

* With No. 1 quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick expected to be limited in the opener, Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage will see the majority of reps over the final 3 1/2 quarters - and for Keenum, the opportunity is there to perhaps seize the starting role. With wide receiver Andre Johnson sitting out with a hamstring injury, the focus will be on third-year receiver DeVier Posey, who will start in his place.

* Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians believes the starters on both sides of the ball will see about 15 snaps, though it's unlikely to be any more than that with nearly the entire Arizona roster healthy and available to play. Arizona had a successful exhibition campaign a year ago, rolling to a 3-1 record after going just 1-4 a season earlier.

Saturday, August 9th:

1* Cleveland PK
1* Pittsburgh +3 -120
1* Green Bay +2
1* Houston +1.5

Jim Caldwell has never taken the preseason seriously going like 2-12 SU and Brown HC Pettine isn't revealing much on his plan for the starters, but I figure he'll want to win game one.

Tomlin lost every Preseason game last year - so counting that 0-4 he is now 14-8 SU in Preseason and Coughlin isn't the great Preseason coach to begin with at 19-27 with lines of -3 to +3. I figure Tomlin wants to get to winning in August since he is off one of his worse seasons in Pittsburgh.

Neither of these coaches care much about Preseason, but even more so was the case with Ken Weisenhunt. Even when he took over for a BAD Cardinals team I can remember him just not caring at all about a Week 1 win for sure, but his overall was 8-17 SU McCarthy is at least 15-17 over his career.

So far this week teams that had won 10+ games in the regular season of 2013 are now 2-7. The kicker here is that the two wins were against other teams that also had 10+ wins LY (Den vs Sea & KC vs Cinn). That said I'll back Houston here as Arizona had 10 wins last year, and O'Brien will be looking to get off on the right foot.

News from the Net!

Preseason Recap: The home teams have won 15 of the first 17 preseason contests, including Chicago's comeback victory over Jacksonville on Thursday. Home clubs own a 12-4-1 ATS record, as the Bears failed to cover against the Jaguars last night, while the only road teams to win outright have been the Saints (at Rams) and Bills (at Panthers). The 'under' has cashed in 14 of 18 exhibition games (including the Hall of Fame game), including each of the last five contests since last Saturday.

Eagles at Patriots (-2 ?, 47) - 7:30 PM EST

2014 Preseason Records: NE (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS), PHI (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Previous Preseason Meeting: Patriots (+3 ?) beat Eagles, 24-6 in 2013

Week 1 Review: New England was dominated by Washington, 23-6 as Tom Brady rested in the preseason opener for the Pats. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for New England in exhibition openers. The Eagles fell to the Bears as one-point road favorites, 34-28, as Chicago scored the final 17 points of the contest.

Expert Handicapper Analysis: Joe Nelson - Chip Kelly is now 2-3 S/U and ATS in the preseason and this will be a second straight road game which could take a toll at this stage in the season. New England is 6-3 S/U in the last nine home games in the preseason, averaging 27 points per game. Given Belichick?s respect for Kelly this is a game his team will take seriously and the Patriots should have opportunities early and late in this matchup.

Titans at Saints (-3, 43) - 8:00 PM EST

2014 Preseason Records: TEN (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS), NO (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS)

Previous Preseason Meeting: Titans (+4 ?) beat Saints, 10-6 in 2012

Week 1 Review: The Saints outlasted the Rams as short road underdogs, 26-24, as New Orleans was just one of two teams (Buffalo) to win on the highway last week. The Titans held off the Packers in a driving rainstorm in Nashville, 20-16 as -2 ?-point favorites.

Expert Handicapper Analysis: Doc's Sports - Never like to lay this many points in the exhibition season, but New Orleans played to win in game 1 and I see that trend continuing in Week 2. Hard to take away much from the Tennessee?Green Bay game since weather played a role, but playing in the Superdome is always a factor that greatly favors the home team. Drew Brees did not play in Week 1 and the Saints still managed to complete 27 of their 40 passes. New Orleans wins this game by double digits.

Lions at Raiders (-2 ?, 39) - 10:00 PM EST

2014 Preseason Records: DET (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS), OAK (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Previous Preseason Meeting: Raiders (+3) beat Lions, 31-20 in 2012

Week 1 Review: The Raiders fell to the Vikings as three-point underdogs, 10-6, as Oakland scored a late touchdown and failed on a two-point conversion in the final minutes. The Lions rallied past the Browns, 13-12 to cash as 1 ?-point home underdogs, as the lone touchdown came in the contest came by Detroit with 1:05 remaining.

Expert Handicapper Analysis: The Gold Sheet - The Oakland coaching staff is fighting for its job this season and was very upset with the team's poor performance last week at Minnesota, as evidenced by the team's several fights this week while scrimmaging with Dallas. Detroit is not very deep on defense, especially in the secondary, which should yield opportunities to new Oakland No. 1 QB Matt Schaub, impressive rookie Derek Carr, and young veteran Matt McGloiin. New Detroit coach Jim Caldwell is from the Tony Dungy "low key" school of thought in preseason, with Caldwell going only 4-8 vs. the spread while head coach at Indianapolis and only 1-5 vs. the spread as a visitor.

Chargers at Seahawks (-6, 38 ?) - 10:00 PM EST

2014 Preseason Records: SD (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS), SEA (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Previous Preseason Meeting: Seahawks (-3) beat Chargers, 31-10 in 2013

Week 1 Review: Seattle's eight-game preseason winning streak came to an end in a Super Bowl rematch with Denver, as the Seahawks lost 21-16 as one-point road favorites. The Chargers cruised past the beat-up Cowboys, 27-7 as 3 ?-point home favorites, snapping a two-game home losing streak in the preseason.

Expert Handicapper Analysis: James Manos - It's obvious that Seahawks HC Pete Carroll takes the preseason seriously as he's gone 21-13 SU and 24-10 ATS in his NFL preseason coaching appearances, including going 8-0 SU combined in 2012 and 2013. The Seahawks did lose their preseason opener this season at Denver, but that was a huge revenge setup for the Broncos, and anyone who really watched the game could see that both coaches were making an effort to WIN. This will be Seattle's first home game since winning the Super Bowl and they should be welcomed by the loud and racous crowd that give the Seahawks the best homefield advantage in the NFL. The Chargers enter off demolishing Dallas and San Diego accomplished all it's goals in that game.

Saturday's Tip Sheet

August 16, 2014

This year?s preseason has been all about the home team and that trend continued on Friday. Prior to yesterday?s action, home teams were 15-2 straight up and that number improved to 19-2 after all four home squads captured victories last night.

Bettors also saw a bunch of low-scoring games in Week 1 but it appears that trend could be balanced out by next weekend. After watching the ?under? go 14-4 in the first 18 games of the preseason, the scoreboard was finally lit up on Friday as the ?over? went 4-0.

Seven of the eight teams in action scored 24-plus points and half of them busted 30 or more points. With starters getting more minutes and the new emphasis of penalties being called that favor the offense, bettors shouldn?t be surprised to see more points going forward.

We have eight more preseason games on Saturday and with the help of our expert handicappers, we?ll focus on four primetime matchups for you to follow.

Be sure to check out all the openers and lines moves, plus follow us on Twitter for daily NFL updates.

N.Y. Jets at Cincinnati (7:00 p.m. ET)

2014 Preseason Records: NYJ (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS), CIN (0-1 SU, 0-0-1 ATS)

Week 1 Review: New York held off Indianapolis 13-10 but failed to cover as a 3 ?-point home favorite. The combined 23 points never threatened the closing total of 39. Cincinnati found itself on the short end of a wild shootout loss to Kansas City, 41-39. The Bengals earned a push (+2) with a late touchdown and two-point conversion while the ?over? cashed in the second quarter.

Preseason H2H: These teams didn?t meet last summer. In 2011, the Jets captured a 27-7 win at home while the Bengals returned the favor in 2012 with a 17-6 from Cincinnati.

Expert Handicapper Notes: Tony Stoffo - New York Jets at Cincinnati

We have a strong multi-year preseason trend going here - as the Bengals under head coach Marvin Lewis and the Bengals sure like to bring a big effort in their first home preseason game - as the Bengals are a perfect 4-0 both straight up and against the spread the last 4 years. The Jets may be the perfect opponent to extend this streak for the Bengals as the Jets in the first road preseason game over the past 3 years are a money making 0-3.

N.Y. Giants at Indianapolis (7:00 p.m. ET)

2014 Preseason Records: NYG (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS), Indianapolis (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS)

Week 1 Review: This will be the third preseason game for the Giants, who defeated the Bills 17-13 in the Hall of Fame Game and the Steelers 20-16 last Saturday. The ?under? connected in both games, barely. The Colts lost a 13-10 decision to the Jets while covering as 3 ?-point road ?dogs.

Preseason H2H: In last year?s preseason, the Colts defeated the Giants 20-12 as two-point road underdogs while the combined 32 points fell ?under? the closing total of 41 ?.

Expert Handicapper Notes: Mike Rose - New York?s season was over in October a year ago as the Giants started 0-6 before finishing the season 7-9. The Giants have a pair of preseason wins thanks to playing in the Hall of Fame game and their running game has shown significant improvement with the addition of RBs Rashard Jennings and rookie Andre Williams, who should be in the spotlight even more this week with backup RB Peyton Hillis out for a bit with an ankle injury suffered last week. The offensive line is clearly stronger and going to offer better protection for Eli Manning and the Giants QBs. Veteran backup Curtis Painter is 10/10 for 94 yards in the preseason and promising rookie Ryan Nassib has played well in two games going 19/33 for 220 yards. Manning may play more to get sharper in the new West Coast offense installed this year. The Giants had a top-10 defense last year while the Colts won 11 games with a defense that ranked #20 and was below average against the run and pass despite playing in a very weak division with poor QB play.

Buffalo at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m. ET)

2014 Preseason Records: BUF (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS), PIT (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Week 1 Review: Similar to the Giants, this will be the third preseason game for the Bills. Buffalo bounced back from the HOF Game loss to New York with a 20-18 road win over Carolina last Friday. The Bills led from start to finish and avoided overtime by stopping the Panthers from converting a late two-point conversion. Pittsburgh fell to the aforementioned Giants 20-16 in Week 1. The Steelers offense produced nine points on three field goals while the defense helped the cause with a fumble recovery touchdown.

Preseason H2H: The pair met in 2012 and the Steelers ripped the Bills 38-7 as 2 ?-point road underdogs. The ?over? (39.5) cashed.

Expert Handicapper Notes: ASA ? The Steelers' Mike Tomlin has been very successful in the preseason and goes out to win games. He had a 19-10 record in the preseason entering this season and they lost their opener in Week 1. After a rare ?off? season last year where the Steelers finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs we expect them to emphasize winning this game in front of their home fans. Buffalo isn?t in a great spot here in our opinion. They are playing their 3rd straight week away from home after losing to the Giants in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, OH and then beating Carolina on the road last week 20-18. They squeaked by the Panthers despite the fact Carolina start QB Cam Newton didn?t even play in the game. The yardage was fairly close in that contest but the Panthers turned the ball over three times to just one for Buffalo which was the difference in the game.

Miami at Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m. ET)

2014 Preseason Records: MIA (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS), TB (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Week 1 Review: The Dolphins and Buccaneers both suffered 16-10 losses in Week 1 of the preseason on the road to the Falcons and Jaguars respectively. Each team also saw the ?under? connect as well.

Preseason H2H: These teams square off every preseason. The Buccaneers have won and covered the last three meetings, but two of the margins were decided by four points or less. Total bettors should note that the ?under? is 16-3 in the last 19 preseason encounters, which includes a current run of six straight.

Expert Handicapper Notes: Pat Hawkins ? The Buccaneers looked very weak in their preseason opener last week against Jacksonville, losing 16-10 on the road. I expect head coach Lovie Smith and Tampa Bay to have their offense performing at a higher level than it did in the first week of the preseason. Prior to last week?s loss, Smith was 6-2 in his last eight exhibition games, which tells you that he takes these games to heart. Look for the Bucs to put a much better performance out on the field as Lovie makes his home debut against intrastate rival Miami.

Sunday, August 17th:

After the fold that the Colts took last night I'm about ready to call this preseason a finished process. However CVS wasn't out of band aids so my wounds have been covered and I'm back for more.

1* Carolina -3 +100

I have No Recourse here but to take the Panthers here. Andy Reid is off a win and is a career loser in the Preseason, and is 4-11 in August fake games when off a home win. Rivera is a .500 coach and off a home loss where he was 4-2 there before that loss.

Quarterback Alex Smith and the first-team offense are scheduled to play the first half, and they need to show more production than the meager 28 yards and two first downs (one by penalty) in three first-quarter possessions in the preseason opener against Cincinnati. Smith was bothered by the team?s inability to convert two third-and-short situations, and was peeved with himself for losing a fumble while being sacked.

Newton and the first-team offense look to get more reps in a second exhibition game than ever before in the four years under head coach Ron Rivera. That?s because the Panthers turn around from Sunday night?s game and travel to New England for a Friday night game.

On short rest, the Panthers? starters won?t play deep into the third exhibition like those for Carolina, and the rest of the NFL teams, usually have.

Rivera is good friends with Kansas City coach Andy Reid. In the unlikely event Reid hasn?t gotten word yet, Rivera will let Reid know he plans to play his starters longer than a team normally would for a second exhibition.

?Just so he knows and he can act accordingly,? Rivera said. ?To me it?s not about surprising anybody, just so that he knows we?re going to go a little longer and if wants to keep his ones in a little bit longer, then great. If not we?ll play against whoever he puts out there.?

Sounds like Coach Ron is saying just so you know where going to kick your ass, but we wanted to give you a heads up about it LOL.

I dunno, but I'm taking Carolinia.

Okay last post on this thread as far as picks go, and then I'll start a new thread for each week. That seems to be the way of the land here, and that's fine.

Monday, August 18th:

1* Cleveland +2.5

Both coaches are new to the NFL has head guys, and both are off different Week 1's. Washington showed New England that they can beat up on 3rd stringers. Cleveland showed they have no offense, but a decent defense.

So in that regard why is this line only 2.5 when the Skins are for all intentions the much better team here based on last weeks games?

One I think Pettine will be one out to get a win along with former Assistant now Offensive coach Kyle Shanahan to get rid of last weeks bad taste. We all know by now it's not about player evaluation when handicapping the NFL during preseason, but about how the coaches approach the game. Here is how Gruden appears to be approaching it.

Starters may only play a quarter or so against Cleveland on Monday night. Redskins coach Jay Gruden will likely keep the first-teamers on the field more in the third preseason game ? traditionally the most telling showcase in August ? when Washington plays in Baltimore on Saturday. But tonight?s matchup, the last preseason home game for the Redskins, will offer only a glimpse at the starting offense.

To me this reads as if he is more worried about the 3rd game, and that this Monday Nighter is just in the way of his schedule. A Blip on the radar. I mean after all he got a good showing last week, and a bad showing here would give him a chance to coach his team back up.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/expre...ve-storylines-for-mondays-game-vs-the-browns/

The Browns unfortunately have to run their starters longer tonight, because of the tight battle between Manziel and Hoyer. Neither of which have grabbed the starting position by the throat.

Kyle and Mike don;t care who gets the starting job; they just want one of them to step up big tonight so they can get this off their plate for the remainder of the preseason.

Taking the Browns here.
