Well for all the cool video and far away stories you hear about the war on terrorism, it finally hit home for me Wednesday. Helga Boes was a good friend and his wife and my girlfriend were best friends in Law School. He was a CIA case officer that volunteered to go over to Afghanistan and died in a training accident. We were just at their house last week he was showing me his German beer collection. I had brought over some new ones for him but we ended up drinking them. My life has been upside down for 48 hours now. 32 years old, what a shame.

Godspeed my friend, rest in peace.

Deeply sorry for your loss, Ace. Prayers are with you and your loved ones as well as his.

The sad state of the world today is that if I would have seen this story any other day, I would have skipped right passed it. This has been a real eye-opener for me.

May God be with us all in these trying times.

Ace-So sorry to here that the latest casualty in this improbable war was your friend. You are right about driving it home, making it personal.A kid I grew up with was killed in the World Trade center, used to ride my bike to his house as a boy.My mom worked for his dad for 10 years,he and his three siblings thought of her as their mother.Thirty years later,my friend went to work,a single parent of four and never came home,on the 92nd floor my brother told me.Our government is getting intel that indicates that another terrorist attack on our soil is supposedly planned for mid-Feb,hence the current high state of alert. It seems as if many in this country have put it out of their minds and are acting as if nothing has changed. They should read the article in USA Today (2/7/03) about the recently formed Ansar al-Islam (Friends of Islam)group operating out the mountains of Iraq now. They are butchering the Kurds there in night raids, and begin their attacks screaming"Death to the Friends of America".They mutilate the bodies after killing them.We are in this for the long haul it appears as though our opponents are vengence minded and hatefilled."Death to the friends of America"while killing an Iraqi Kurd?Again Ace,very sorry to hear that this mindless killing touched someone that you loved.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and the overwhelming emails. Yesterday was the ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base as his body was flown home and tomorrow is the funeral. 32 years old, I cant get over it. I dont know what I or anyone else has done over the past 18 months, but this guy put a 6 figure legal career in the closet to work for the Agency making less than $50k a year. He did at least 3 tours in Afghanistan fighting the war on terrorism. Isnt there something sick and perverse about a society that will pay an attorney $500,000 a year but pays young men on the ground fighting terrorism undercover $50,000? Makes me sad. There was a nice writeup in the Washington Post yesterday. Again thanks for all the kind words.
