The rankings below are based on an efficiency calculation which includes a variety of metrics, while excluding data such as turnover points and yardage production (e.g., Pick 6s and fumble returns). In the past I?ve also excluded outlier stats, like zero-point games (e.g., the 2 skunks the Bills? defense put up against the Dolphins and Texans), and unusually large or small yardage productions, especially very low rushing stats (usually the result of a team falling way behind early). Given that the current data covers less than 1/3rd of the season, I?ve left these outliers in, which skews certain rankings (like the Bucs having the best defense against run?), but this early in the season it?s hard to know a genuine outlier when you see it. This means that the numbers which are used is entirely a subjective determination, but the numbers are objectively factual, so make of it what you will.
