Scott, what conference has the best defense, pac10 or SEC? be honest
Tough question but from the top of my head I would say the SEC. However, I think it is too tough to answer because both conferences play different style football. Neither style is better or worse.
I will say this, Pac 10 does not have great defensive minded coaches/coordinators. But on the flip side, the Pac 10 is "loaded" with great offensive minded head coaches/coordinators.
Chow and Tedford are leaps and bounds better offensive coaches than anybody in the SEC. Tedford scares me at CAL. CAL is going to be a great program as soon as Tedford gets more talent over there. Watch how good QB Rodgers will be next year for CAL.
I think defenses have tough time playing in the Pac 10 because offenses are so great. Talent wise and coaching wise. However, I do think that many teams in Pac 10 focus to much on offense and not enough on defense. USC, WSU, UCLA and Oregon St. focus on defense. That is about it. Stanford somewhat. Washington used too until WEASAL took over, but that will change under GILBY.
So to answer your question, I thik SEC defense are better coached than Pac 10 defenses. I also think defense is more of a priority in SEC than Pac 10. HOWEVER, I do think the Pac 10 offenses would score on the SEC defenses. Remember, the PAC has not had trouble playing SEC teams, in fact Pac 10 has great record against the SEC. So that is my answer, which really is not much of an answer. Do you understand what I was trying to say? Basically I am trying to say do not think the Pac 10 does not play defense because of the "stats" put up against them. That is BS. Offenses are really good, therefore they put up great numbers. However, I do not think there are as much focus on defense as there is in the SEC. For that alone, I give the SEC the advantage. You can say the same things vice versa about offenses about PAC 10 and SEC. Just different style football. USC is unique because they play offense like pac 10 (yet are physical) and play hard nose defense (physical again).
