Not sure if I believe this but thought it would be worthwhile to post this article. Does anybody believe this?

Exclusive: The Pope brokers secret exile deal to avert war
From Marion McKeone at the UN, New York

SADDAM Hussein and his family are to be given 72 hours on Tuesday to accept an offer of exile, while 50 of Iraq's top military brass will be offered an amnesty in return for full co-operation with the United Nations in a secret plan to be tabled at its New York headquarters.
The highly sensitive proposal was tabled by Pakistan during a closed-door meeting of the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council on Friday and was brokered by Saudi Arabia, the Vatican and moderate Arab states. Failure by Saddam to agree to the plan would clear the way for war.

If the proposal, understood to be in the form of a short paragraph, becomes part of a second resolution and is adopted by the Security Council, the UN would oversee the establishment of a post-Saddam government and the UN, not the US, would take stewardship of Iraq's oilfields.

The Iraqi generals and top ranking officers would have to co-operate fully with UN inspectors to oversee the total elimination of any weapons of mass destruction.

Pope John Paul II has dispatched his emissaries to meet all the key parties during the past two weeks. His special envoy and per manent observer at the UN, Archbishop Renato Rafaele Martino, has been discussing the proposal with all the Security Council members.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Pio Laghi, a former Papal Nuncio, met with President George W Bush, while Cardinal Angelo Sodano has met with Tony Blair. Cardinal Roger Etchegaray met with Saddam in Baghdad and discussed the subject of exile, which he said Saddam did not rule out.

American sources have confirmed that the US and Jordan have recently discussed the prospect of using the UN to offer a formal exile and amnesty package to Saddam and his inner circle.

Last month, Saddam rejected informal pleas to choose exile over war. But the US is aware that one of the attractions of an amendment that extends the offer to his family and military leaders is the likelihood it may trigger a coup, leading to his assassination by a member of his inner circle.

It is thought that Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay, would push for a safe passage out rather than face a cataclysmic end in a Baghdad bunker. 'Uday might be the first to shoot his father if he refused an amnesty,' one senior Jordan official is quoted as saying.

The proposed amendment is still at a low rung on the UN procedural ladder but the non-permanent members believe it represents a last best chance to avert a war. But, from the Security Council's point of view, it offers a compromise that would allow its members to unite and vote for a second resolution.

UN sources have also indicated that a second resolution on Tuesday with the March 17 ultimatum -- incorporating an offer of exile -- would provide an attractive compromise that would let the French to come on board without 'losing face' or appearing to have capitulated to the US.

i believe it they were talking about something like that last night on msnbc and said the arab world was putting together something did not say pope was in it but it would give a safe way out and if not taken then iraq would be free game to take and over throw him.

so about the same type of a report that came from there msnbc in the middle east sat night.

that would be great news to me and i hope others would feel the same. but if not then do what has to be done as much as i really hate to see that.

thanks for posting that.

I don't believe it. I don't think the Muslims involved would have any time for the pope. I don't think the pope would be dumb enough to try this.

If it is true, I would guess that there would be more Catholics leaving that faith than when the papacy turned a blind eye to all the child molesting priests.

I did some research and found the link to this articleHERE I also looked at Snopes and couldn't find it refuted there yet. I reread the article, and it still seems like a crock to me. Also the article claims this is "exclusive" and it's a "secret deal". That sounds like the National Enquirer and other tabloids. I'm not sure what kind of publication this Sunday Herald is either, maybe it's a tabloid type:confused: Anyway, thanks for posting, and update if u can whether or not it was true.

JPII

JPII

If your Catholic or not. You have got to like JPII. He is the most recognizable figure in the world. He has strived for peace his entire life. The ?priest issue? is so blown out of proportion it?s sad. Yes, there were gay priests. Yes, they did molest little boys. Yes, these few men will have some major issues with God to take care of. No, the priesthood isn?t flooded with these perverts and no the Catholic Church is not in peril.

JPII (that?s John Paul the second) is an awesome leader. As a child he worked in a quarry to avoid the Nazis. Since his 1978 election to the Papacy, he has been the most visible Pope ever. He led Vatican II, which is too intense to get into here. Look it up if you don?t know. He has just been a cool Pope. We will never see another like him in our time. It?s just like him to search for peace for everyone Muslim, Jewish, or Christian.

Do you think any other religious leader would reach out to help? Who is really searching for peace? Where is your Baptist Convention? Where are the Methodists? Don?t think the Dali Lama is concerned with Iraq. No other religious leaded to be found. Only JPII is there leading the way like he has his entire life.

Blazer--Once again we find ourselves with something else in common...Catholocism.

I do appreciate your views on this subject, but it would be hard for other religions to step in line because there is not one voice for the entire organization. Barring the Dhali Lama (sp?), no other religious order has a single named leader. I feel that Baptists, Methodists, Jews, etc are in the same line of thinking as us, but there is not a single leader to step forth and voice an opinion for all.

I hope if true it works. Would be nice to bring all our men and women home safe. Some of the problem in believeing it. Is the differant views one religion has for the other. Also with the church as I call it haveing so many problem of its own last 3/4 years. Some of the strenght it had is gone.
Im to the point of saying the hell with Iraq period. Let the dam French,Germans & Russians handle it. And I dont care how they do it. They can also pay for it all. Bring our troops home and get ready to have the final soultion to N Korea play out. N Korea must be delt with before they do something real grazy.
