"I hope these discussions can continue on a respectful level, without name calling and insults".......................and then without skipping a beat...
""""" I will say that while I believe George W. Bush's political base generally lacks intelligence""""", it does not mean that EVERY pro-Bush voter is dumb. Misguided and misinformed -- yes. Dumb -- no.
probably one of the most condescending things ever written on this forum.......that wasn`t written with at least a little humorous intent.......
ohhh nolan.....
george bush`s political base is basicallly the working class....not the college crowd....not the university faculty.....the backbone of this country.......and i don`t think they`re unintelligent...
nolan, you know,i hope, that i like and respect you.....but,this is the type of elitist attitude that just makes you shake your head...
a very subtle insult...i hope everyone that read it understood the intent...[/QUOTE)

Gardenweasel:
I am glad you got the double meaning of the post -- an olive branch laced with thorns to the Bush camp. I am sincere when I say I do not want to personalize the debate. For instance, my father is a rabid Bush supporter. He is a man who has read extensively on political issues and watches CSPAN like religion. I certainly would not call him "dumb" nor would this label apply to many within the millions of Bush supporters. I have serious issues politically with Bush supporters (and admittedly I am way on the extreme when it comes to American foreign policy). I also admit to being an "elitist."
That term does not mean that I think I am better than anyone else (nor more moral or ethical), it simply means that I think -- for the most part -- the average American voter is about as dumb as a bag of rocks (look at the last four or five Presidential nominees by BOTH parties, if you doubt this -- is this the best the American electorate can do out of 280 millioin citizens?). I admit that I do NOT want millions of more Americans voting, people likley to be swayed by the way a candidate parts his hair or what he says during a 20 second sound bite. Of course, that will make me sound like a monarchist -- but the fact is, I'm in favor of a Jeffersonian model of deomcracy that leaves decision-making in the hands of those who are most aware of the important issues of the day (don't ask me to elaborate -- my ideas are terribly utopian). Screw voter registration drives -- if people have to be PERSUADED to register and get involved in the process, they probably are not going to take enough time to make informed decisions!
So yes, I am am elitist -- and proud of it. Flame away.
