Weekend NCAA & NFL Predictions
Arkansas vs. Florida
Sports betting enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend with when the No. 4 Florida Gators (11-1 SU & 3-8 ATS) face No. 8 Arkansas (10-2 SU & 4-7 ATS) in the SEC championship game in Atlanta, where the Gators hope to redeem themselves with Florida investors after dropping the cash in their last five consecutive games.
For the Gators to sneak into the BCS title game on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz., several things have to happen. Florida, which is fourth in the BCS standings this week, has to hope UCLA can beat No. 2 USC. Then the Gators have to beat the Razorbacks and hope that is enough to jump ahead of No. 3 Michigan, which only has one loss.
The Gators are being realistic about their chances, but have to be careful to avoid looking past Arkansas, which was in the hunt until a 31-26 loss to LSU last Friday ended its chances of playing for the national title.
The Gators have found a way to win nearly every week this season, squeezing out tight victories when defeat seemed likely. They rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Tennessee 21-20 on Sept. 16, then blocked an extra point and a field goal to get past South Carolina 17-16 on Nov. 11.
Florida has won its last five meetings with Arkansas to take a 5-1 SU lead in the all-time series. The Gators beat the Razorbacks 45-30 in 2004, in the last meeting between the teams, and also won 34-3 in the 1995 SEC championship game.
Notable Game Trends:
- Gators are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.
- Gators are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- Gators are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- Gators are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 conference games.
- Razorbacks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in December.
- Razorbacks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU loss.
- Razorbacks are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- Favorite is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
Prediction - Arkansas 24 Florida 21
Shanahan Calls on Jay Cutler
With his team having lost two straight for the first time in two years, Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan feels his team is in need of a spark. He is hopeful that rookie QB Jay Cutler can provide one.
Cutler will try to inject some life into the Broncos' struggling offense in his NFL debut when Denver (7-4 SU & ATS) faces the Seattle Seahawks (7-4 SU & ATS) at Invesco Field on Sunday night.
Shanahan ended speculation Monday by naming Cutler his starting QB for the rest of the season, sending veteran Jake Plummer to the bench.
Cutler, the 11th overall pick in the draft last April, hasn't played since the preseason, but Shanahan believes the rookie can help an offense that ranks 26th in the league in passing ypg (171.5).
Cutler was impressive in the preseason, throwing for 561 yards with a league-best 108.3 passer rating, but even he knows that doesn't mean much anymore.
The Broncos haven't lost three straight since Oct. 19-Nov. 3, 2003.
The Seahawks have been dealing with injuries of their own, but must feel a lot better now that Pro Bowl QB Matt Hasselbeck has returned and RB Shaun Alexander has displayed the form that made him the NFL MVP in 2005.
Hasselbeck was responsible for four first-half turnovers, but redeemed himself with three second-half TD passes in a 34-24 victory over Green Bay on MNF in first game after missing four weeks with a sprained right knee.
The star of the game, though, was Alexander, who finished with 201 yards on a career-high 40 carries. That performance came one week after he was held to 37 yards on 17 rushes in a 20-14 loss at San Francisco, his first game following a two-month layoff due to a broken foot.
Alexander became only the third RB in league history to rush 40 times for 200 yards in a game, joining Walter Payton in 1977 and Terrell Davis in 1997. Seattle improved to 4-0 this season with both Hasselbeck and Alexander in the lineup.
Sunday's game will be the first meeting between these former AFC West rivals since the Broncos' 31-9 victory on Nov. 17, 2002. Denver has won six straight matchups at home and 12 of the last 13. Seattle hasn't won in Denver since Dec. 10, 1995.
Notable Game Trends:
- Seahawks are 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 games in December.
- Seahawks are 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- Seahawks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
- Seahawks are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog.
- Seahawks are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
- Broncos are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0.
- Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a home favorite.
- Broncos are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.
- Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
- Broncos are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Prediction - Seattle 24 Denver 10
