If the post office is going to go down, perhaps it should at least go down with a fight.

Gordon Wozniak, a city councilman in Berkeley, Calif., has proposed an email tax to provide much-needed revenue to the ailing U.S. Postal Service, local blog Berkleyside reports. The idea comes amid efforts to avoid the sale of a local post office building due to the service?s flagging revenue, both locally and on the national scale: In its latest budget year, the U.S. Postal Service lost more than $15 billion.

?There should be something like a bit tax,? Wozniak said, according to CBS Berkeley. ?I mean a bit tax could be a cent per-gigabit and they would still make, probably, billions of dollars a year? And there should be, also, a very tiny tax on email.?

Wozniak told The Huffington Post that while not his own idea, the bit tax could bring in revenue to help a number of sectors, beyond just the post office.

"The internet being free gives it an advantage which is impacting the post office negatively," he said. "The bit tax is a pretty painless way to help even the playing field."

Wozniak?s proposal comes amid many other ideas to aid the Postal Service?s woes. The Postal Service itself has proposed ending Saturday delivery, while other options include ramping up junk mail delivery, advertising on the side of mail trucks and even a new clothing line.

As of now, there is one large factor standing in the way of the tax on email: It wouldn?t be legal until Congress allows the expiration of the Internet Tax Freedom Act in 2014

how about this novel idea

run the PO like a business and get your shit together

what a stupid idea to charge for email
to save the PO

they would just continue to throw money away and be bankrupt again in 10 yrs

pity really

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Thursday defended Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), saying Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) criticism of their decision to filibuster the president's pick for CIA director was "sad."

Speaking on Fox News, Gingrich doled out criticism of his own, questioning McCain's "maverick" moniker.

"What I find sad about Sen. McCain's recent comments both to Ted Cruz ... and with Rand Paul, is, you know, when I first knew John McCain in the House -- he was a maverick. In the Senate, for years, he was a maverick," said Gingrich.

Gingrich further lamented what he sees as a change in McCain, saying, "Of everybody I know in the Senate, I didn't know anybody who had a better record of bucking the leadership, doing what he thought mattered, marching to his own drummer."

McCain condemned Paul's Wednesday filibuster of John Brennan to head the CIA. Paul sought to press the Obama administration on its drones program. In an interview with The Huffington Post's Jon Ward, McCain -- a supporter of the administration on the issue -- described Paul and Cruz as "wacko birds."

Gingrich said he believes McCain's comments only hurt him.

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama had a ready excuse for anyone who didn't think he was funny enough at Saturday night's Gridiron dinner: "My joke writers have been placed on furlough."

Always a target for humorous barbs, the president tossed out a few of his own during the Gridiron Club and Foundation dinner, an annual event that features political leaders, journalists and media executives poking fun at each other.

The so-called sequester that struck the federal budget this month drew another observation from Obama: "Of course, there's one thing in Washington that didn't get cut ? the length of this dinner. Yet more proof that the sequester makes no sense."

The ambitions of 70-year-old Vice President Joe Biden? "Just the other day, I had to take Joe aside and say, `Joe, you are way too young to be the pope. You can't do it. You got to mature a little bit.'"

During a pause in his remarks, Obama took a long, slow sip of water and then said, "That, Marco Rubio, is how you take a sip of water."

Obama also mocked criticism from some quarters that he takes time off from his job. "We face major challenges. March in particular is going to be full of tough decisions. But I want to assure you, I have my top advisers working around the clock. After all, my March Madness bracket isn't going to fill itself out. And don't worry ? there is an entire team in the Situation Room as we speak, planning my next golf outing, right now at this moment.":scared

Krauthammer: Obama's Golf With Tiger Travel Expenses Would Pay for a Year of White House Tours

By Noel Sheppard | March 07, 2013 | 20:06

President Obama actually had the nerve this week to close down the White House to tours as part of budget sequestration.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer on Fox News's Special Report Thursday observed, "The President?s travel expenses alone for the golfing outing with Tiger Woods would pay for a year of White House visits."

Obama is a Fucking FRAUD.

Why do you hate our country and why do you hope we fail? Neocons on this board rooting for a collapse so they can shame Obama. Must still sting that Bush was the biggest idiot on the planet, neocons hoping for a liberal to be worse to swap the sting. Not happening.

Pity really
