He has to get his head out of his ass. These guys think that they have to turn into some kind of sitcom every Sunday night. It is getting stupid.

Did you hear him saying that Rams should have gone for it on 4th and 2 when the score was 27-22. Luckily Martz did not listen to him and kicked the FG.

Theismann is easily the worst announcer in football.

A dissenting viewpoint:

Okay, I know this is all a matter of personal taste. But, I'd like to offer a few counterthoughts about the ESPN Sunday night crew.

They do often say things that are out of line and make me disagree STRONGLY with the opinions they express. In fact, at least a few times every Sunday night I hear myself uttering some profanity in response to what I'm hearing.

However, what makes them special (and well above average amongst their peers) is that THEY DO SAY SOMETHING which is going to be thought-provoking, and often controversial. Frankly, I love controversial reporting because it takes steel balls to make statements that are likley to upset half of your viewing audience. Unlike most of the other milquetoast announcing tandems that won't EVER say anything CRITICAL or INTERESTING about players, coaching decisions, or referees, the Theisman, McGuire, and Patrick trio is pretty open with their opinions. Listening each week, it reminds me of watching the game in my living room with freinds around the TV. Sure, I don't agree always with what they say and they certainly don't agree with me and my wacky ideas, but we are SAYING SOMETING WORTH LISTENING TO.

Contrast this with the god-awful announcing team that did this year's World Series of Baseball. The Buck kid is as wooden and emotionless as a rotting corpse. He's also stupid and knows nothing about the sport. This kid's best freind is a mike in his ear and a teleprompter. Father Jack Buck must be pissing in his grave listening to this little shiit pandering to every wonderful thing about baseball while the tech man pulls the puppet strings.

In the NFL, I have been astonished at what I've heard from many of the broadcast teams. Today's are worse than ever -- especially on FOX. Most of the conversationis is tripe and isn't worth listening to, even for the most hard core fans. For all his faults, I do not thingk Theisman falls into this category. He certainly knows the game well, expresses himself clearly, and is highly opinionated. That's exactly waht I WANT in an announcer.

Give me one Howard Cosell over any of these mornons who masquerade as sports journalists, nowadays.

Well, maybe they go out of their way to be controversial and entertaining (I am not sure "entertaining" is the word for it... "irritating" seems more appropriate). But I will take Michaels and Madden a hundred times over those three clowns. They manage to be entertaining and clever, while at the same time being knowledgeable and informative and not coming off as bufoons. This is the best crew I've heard calling football in a long, long time. ABC finally got it right.

And besides, there is a free Michaels betting reference in every game. :)

The thing I hate is that Thiesman just does not shut up. All I hear is him and whatever he wants to say, I would like to watch some of the game without an opinion on every play and anything else by him. I find myself clicking the channels more on Sunday night then any other time on Sunday because I am sick of hearing him every minute.

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
GM,
:) Agreed, until Madden starts to go off on his 6 or 8 fvcking legged turkey for the Thanksgiving Day game. That crap has nothing to do with football and is all hype for Madden. ;) Maybe he wont be on for that this year  JMHO:p

I think the Turducken thing is funny. I mean they can have some fun now and then. At least they aren't screaming at each other like Theisman and Maguire, while Patrick is overdramatizing every catch, every little thing.

And no, Madden definitely won't be on the Thanksgiving Day contests. He works for ABC now, they don't do those games. He did his Turducken thing on the Monday before T-giving last year I think.

Giving the choice of listening to Theisman and the Espn Crew, I
would pick the Espn Crew easily. They flat out call it like it is, whether u like it or not. Not many crews will call the Ref a bunch of idiots after a totaly blown call on pass int.
Now as far as clowns, lets start with Pee on Sanders and Crack head Irvin, or what about flipping Cox. Broadcasting has become a joke IMO

I like that Suzie Kolber idea!

Most every broadcasting crew over yaks it! I mean, I can see for myself what is going on in the game and can recognize when a team really needs to make a 1st down or a score.

I really think 3 guys is too many in the booth. Though I did use to enjoy Howard, Frank and Dandy. Really liked Alex Karras in his brief stint. Love Madden.

My most irritating choice:

Theissman, Dierdorf, Randy Cross, Todd Christenson (don't know if he is still around).

I can't really say that there's a single commentary team that I care for. Last weekend in the first half of the Eagles game on the HDTV feed somehow the announcers weren't coming through and it was AWESOME! All the rest of the sounds of the game were there, just no commentary. I was disappointed when it came back on during the 2nd half.

That said, I do have to give some props to the crew last night when the officiating crew threw and then picked up the flag on the pass interference that would have been against the Rams and given Baltimore 1st and goal from the 3. It was clearly PI and missing it would have been one thing, but throwing the flag and then picking it up is inexcusable and the announcers ripped into the officials for that, rightly so.
