I have removed red meat from my diet at this point.

So now it's fish & fowl for the meat section of my diet. I am thinking about removing the fowl part as well for a given period of time.

Then possibly fish, but I doubt that happens. I really want to move to a diet where if I couldn't grow it on my own farm, I shouldn't eat it. This, of course, would be a farm with a brewery AND a distillery on it....

It probably demands more discipline than I have, though.

Caffeine was a breeze to eliminate.

Can't most farms have a small chicken coop?
Well they did on Little House on the Prarie anyway.

could not do it, I mean plan probably to reduce red meat in my diet, however really enjoy a steak on the bbq.

also could not do without my evening strong coffee, which I believe helps me...

good luck with the diet, believe people stess to much about their diet, and over look the fact that they are not active enough. it is a sad fact that if you go for a brisk walk one hour four times a week, you are in the top 10% of the population....sad.

thanks

Hey DB, did you do this out of need or just will and want? I ask because I always flirt with these dietary ideas but fall of the wagon ot long after. I gave up, pork, red meat, and beef at one point, was eating fish and fowl as well. I need a strong NUTRITIONIST or someone close to so I know what I am doing will work and is healthy as well. I would like to get back to my football playing weight which I am about 15-20 lbs off currently:( Good luck and total veggie sounds terribly hard for me. Maybe all the health nuts or good eaters could post a few recipes and dishes....starting a thread!!

Healthy Eating..

Jason: I have been on a pescatarian diet since last August, which means the only meat I eat is fish. I made the change for health reasons. When you learn about what goes into beef and chicken, it is hard to put it into your body. Before anyone chimes in about farm raised fish, I try to only eat wild caught fish.

Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pallan is what changed my ways.

Hey Selkirk,

I've been posting at the same multiple places as you for 10 years and even though I don't think we've had even a modicum of interaction, you always thank everybody after every post.

I would like to thank *you*.

This isn't a big deal, and I will probably keep the fowl part in for the most part.

I'm sure I will have red meat on occassion, but I'm pretty sure it is all but eliminated at this point.

living in Iowa makes it very easy to know exactly where your beef and chicken come from--if you are willing to shop at the farmers markets and pay a little bit more.
We have been buying our beef from some friends for 6 years now and their neighbors just started producing free-range chickens last year.
I can show you the farms that all my beef and chicken come from--and they are organically raised and humanely treated from birth until slaughter.
You want to really eat better? Don't buy anything that comes in a box .Meaning that if its a meal in a box, DON'T eat it.
Fix your meals from scratch and use fresh ingredients and you are miles ahead of the game.
Don't forget to eat lots of fruit and veggies, too.

I would definitely eat beef or chicken that came off a sustainable farm. Eating beef that was raised on corn (something it isn't designed to digest) isn't for me.

I apologize in advance that I don't have time for a long post right now, so I'll just give my 2 cents now, and add my 98 cents later.

I am not a licensed nutritionist or anything, but with what I have learned in the past couple of years, I could probably give a lot of them a run for their money in terms of knowledge.

First off, a lot you are talking about losing weight. Get out of that mindset (and off the scale). You want to lose FAT!!!! This does not mean go on a low or non fat diet. Fats are needed for proper brain function plus absorption of several vitamins including A,E,K and especially D. I singled out D because much recent research has shown how critical it is to overall health. Read this:http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/vitamin-d-quotes.shtml and this: http://professional.cancerconsultants.com/oncology_main_news.aspx?id=43533

Excess carbohydrates-mainly high glycemic ones- are the main culprit of fat gain. Here is a quick list of stuff to stay away from. The higher the # the worse it is. http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/highglycemicfoodslist.htm

Gotta go, I can add a lot more later if you want!

not sure if you`re espousing the south beach diet or not...that`s the website link...i can see losing the carbs, but for someone with cholesterol issues or a family history of heart disease(not to mention all the hormones and chemicals they pump into livestock),this diet looks like a ticking time bomb...

you can be a bit overweight and still exercise and be very healthy...

maybe i`m way off....i wouldn`t touch that diet with a 10 foot pole...but that`s me...

My post has nothing to do with losing weight. I think the hormones pumped into most foods are centrally related to most of our health problems today.

You might have point on processed foods Dawg-

--but I love meat and fact both sides of family have been farmers eating healthy portions of meat/potatos/eggs/real butter--and my grandparents all lived past 95 except one who died in farming accident past 80 and my parents are mid 80's and take no prescription drugs--

I'm going to have to opt life experience over the heath journals that change daily.

IMO lifestyle and genetics are the key factors.

What health problems? Life expectancy continues to rise, decade over decade. So it could be argued there is a causality between hormones in food and long life. :Dkurby kurby

worked in the hearing aid business for 16 years in western maryland, country living usa.

dealt with seniors on a daily basis that ate mucho pork, steak, sausage gravy and biscuits, all the dairy crap, boozed it up and smoked it up and living well into their 80's, 90's and some in their 100's.

fast food is the problem, plain and simple.

It's kind of funny how people relate not eating red meat to not having a "good time"

smurphy -- get me drunk around a buffet, and i'll eat whatever is left!
