Lemieux is an interesting contrast to Gretzky.
Gretz kept away from all the fights and physical trouble. Super Mario will mix it up in the corners and on the boards. That's the kind of player he is. Injuries from this (and the cancer, of course) means he'll never get the scoring numbers Gretz has.
Toughest of all athletes, man for man, are jockeys.

every one of the little dudes (and dudettes) get thrown, kicked, trampled, sometimes paralyzed and go back on (if they don't get killed). A physiologist did a study several years back and found they are the best all-around conditioned atheletes in existence. (Boxers second). Jockeys gotta have strength, endurance, mental toughness, and no body fat.

I saw a study on the same topic that said male gymnasts were the best conditioned.
Jockeys aren't tuff, it is just a good job midgets and dwarfs can excell in.

As for wayne.... how come every other blue chip type player from the Oilers back in the 80's went on to win another championship with a different team? and wayne didnt?
